That and Japan loves their Monster Hunter, Nintendo made it big by moneyhatting Capcom to put MH games on their systems. Just the sales of the Monster Hunter games on the 3DS alone can stack up to the total Vita software sales:
Taken from the linked thread.
Sony missed a big opportunity. It would have made perfect sense if they were the ones who paid for MH exclusivity. Also a MH4th Portable would have been glorious on the Vita.
did nintendo really pay for exclusivity?
or did capcom justed want to get the MH games to the best selling platform (then and now and in the future)?
sure it was less risky for capcom to publsih MH on a nintendo handheld and it is cheaper to develope for the 3DS than for the vita

I don't know the answer to this specifically, but I do know that a lot of exclusive titles for the 3DS coming out now are simply because the devs prefer it's capabilities over all the others. Many of the interviews it's "the 3DS gave us the perfect platform for this." This has a lot to do with their new policies for game publishing on the system that allow the devs more freedom and better access to the eShop, as well.
Another appealing factor is that the 3DS is holding steady as the most sold game system in most markets now. It's rather humorous mentioning that to those nay-sayers who claimed that the DS was the last gasp of Nintendo so long ago. As to how long this popularity will last, only time will tell, I am hoping this momentum keeps going until I die though, I love Nintendo.

Monster Hunter Frontier G just got announced for Vita so I don't think there's any exclusivity agreement in place. It will also be out on Wii U and PS3.
Also, for people mocking the two 3DS monster hunter sales almost eclipsing vita total software sales, the same could be said for first 24 hours of GTA sales comfortably eclipsing Wii U's total software sales.

I can see Peach64 celebrating because she just PWNED those 14 year old Nintendo fanboys! Yeah! Accomplishments in life! WOO!
Nintendo helped Capcom with Monster Hunter Tri. The ports were probably easy to do within a year for a mainly new and larger audience, which is why it did so well.
Aside from that, there is no reason to keep MH from Vita if it is worth the effort for Capcom.
Besides that, it's pretty interesting to say the least that Monster Hunter on 3DS has already almost met PS Vita's entire library sales.
EDIT: That's not even counting Wii U, which was another half a million about.
