My definition of a BSOD is a black top screen with a black bottom screen containing the error message to restart the console.

That sucks, Apollo! I hadn't heard it could destroy your save files.

So far, no error for me, but I haven't played any retail games on my system yet, and I stopped leaving the wireless on all the time.

Yeah. I may just go get another one and keep returning the consoles if the problem persists... I wish there were more recent articles on the issue or better yet, nintendo would give us an update on the situation. The silence beyond "do a system update" makes me suspicious. It would be a potential sales killer to come out with stats if this is a large problem.

That's hard, Apollo.
I just play with Wi-Fi turned off when i don't need it. And since i'm not much of a portable multiplayer guy i can tolerate the error for now. It would sicken me too much to "waste" even 30 minutes of playing time without having my progress saved.
I hope this problem will at least be solved with the May update.

Wow, if Nintendo still thinks the 3DS needs to be repaired to fix this problem...wow. That either means they still haven't figured out what's actually causing the problem or it's a manufacturing problem, not a firmware bug which can be fixed with a firmware update. Neither of those possibilities is pretty.

Put your analyst on danger money, baby.

Apollo

The guy from Nintendo told me point blank that if you suffer this problem with different games then it's a hardware issue and repair will be required. If it's only happening with one game then it may be the game and not the console.

@Apollo
The "guy from Nintendo" was probably a customer service rep who had no actual idea what was causing the problem (though, given that we haven't gotten a fix for it yet, the programming team/hardware people probably have no idea either). I still think it's firmware, because of the times you get the error (not all the time, just with Wifi on), and the fact that people who haven't updated all seem to be fine. Maybe they're just holding off to get everything fixed in May, but you'd think they'd try to release a bug patch for something this serious ASAP.

Has anyone tried reformatting their 3DS and just not reinstalling the update? You'd only lose your Mii's and progress on built-in games, wouldn't you? All of your game saves would be on the carts. It would also be a great way to test if it was a hardware/firmware issue scientifically-ish.

I still haven't seen this error a single time, and that's after plenty of use.

The only 3rd party game I own, however, is SSFIV... has anyone gotten this error on a system that has never played a non-Nintendo title? I do wonder if some 3rd party games might create corrupted save data on the SD card that triggers the problem.

To me — although I know little of this issue — it sounds like either something corrupted in the save memory OR (and this is much worse) a problem with the wireless adapter in some units. I once had a friend with a MacBook that had a widespread manufacturing defect (reported by countless owners of the exact model online), which caused the entire system to lock up due to a fault in the internal wireless card. It was not a fixable problem, without replacing the entire motherboard.

Thankfully, I haven't experienced this issue. However, I won't update the system until this issue to addressed by Nintendo.

Token Girl,

While I do not know how the Nintendo call centers work, I have worked in call centers during my college years and I can tell you I had databases of information available with search tools. I also had standard procedure templates for most problems which would allow even the least technically savvy to solve basic problems. Beyond that we had technically savvy people walking the floor for support. With this knowledge of how these places usually work and given Nintendo's call center service I experienced was top notch I feel I can safely say if this guy told me a hardware fix was needed then I trust he was not pulling stuff out of his butt to pretend he had the answer.

Well, i still haven't seen any error (except for that time nintendogs told me my SD card was incorrect or something like that)
I haven't updated, but i do have the wireless turned on for normal periods of time.

I really i hope i never see this error and, if i do, that it is just a firmware error.

Blue console, bought at launch, updated day got, played no games, only AR & streetpass. In the UK.
Have left wireless on all the time. Used AR, street pass & camera, No BSOD.
That is until I played with my router also on, orange light on console started flashing so guess it had or was trying to connect to the internet.
Went into activity log and as I came out of this - I got the first and as yet my only BSOD.
It can happen to UK consoles & it can happen to consoles that have never played any cartridge based games.

Interim solution, play with wifi off when I can.
A solution proposed on 3DS forums was to give your 3DS a fixed IP address.

Post 89 (& following posts), by a poster called Asfarn
However the poster said these solutions did not guarantee BSOD would not happen again.

What Apollo says makes depressing reading, (requires a hardware fix, not firmware).
I've not contacted Nintendo, as apart from this, my console seems to be fine, & I've only had the one BSOD.
Any more info surfaced on the subject?

OMG it must be a conspiracy or something! I came to read what this was about, then I realized it was when the screens went black and you got an error message which i got 2 times in a row a week or so ago, then i turned on my 3DS to go on Mii maker then..... i got the BSOD. I have no clue what is wrong. It let me in Mii maker but I got the BSOD after like 1 min in the Mii Maker. I have no clue what could have caused it..... If you guys have any ideas tell me.

Meepok1,

Call Nintendo and let them know. They're the only people who have all the information. Based on everything I experienced it sounds like you may have a hardware problem like I had. Another option would be to bring back the console to the place you purchased it and dont forget to keep your SD card when you exchange it for a new one.

I didn't call Nintendo but I found on their website what it says to do but it is not one bit helpful, it just says to do exactly what is on your 3DS screen and if it happens again your 3DS needs to be repaired. So I went into Mii Maker again to see if it would happen again and after about 10 min into playing it gave me the BSOD. I will probably do what you said and return it to get a different one. If that one does it I will most likely wait for the next gen of 3DS and sell my 3DS games to gamestop and get a refund on my money that I used to buy the 3DS. I just hope I still have that receipt somewhere... Before I got the BSOD for the 3rd time today I was lucky enough to have just enough time to back up all of my miis in QR codes. It still didn't give me the BSOD so I went to make a mii (Noob Saibot to be exact) and as soon as I was finishing typing the name...... you can guess what happened..... the BSOD..... I am really getting tired of this BSOD and I am thinking about ditching the 3DS as a whole and getting back the money. Sorry this is so long and that I repeated myself :I

Sorry to hear that Meepok. Some people are suggesting that it could be due to the firmware update. I'm not sold on that but maybe you should hang tight and wait to purchase a new console after that point as then we will known for sure?

My first 3ds connected to the internet and got an update then after that wireless didn't work I could not connect to my router or to my ds using download play it froze at the multiplayer components of games and the screen went black no bsod error message though and the only way to get it out of that state was to eject my games I took it back and got another one on march the 26th set the intial date at the 25th for a few hours as I was annoyed if it didn't show records of me getting it at launch. Now my second 3ds has had no problems until today I had already added two people I know to my friendslist then I added some one off of xboxlive and my 3ds crashed when he input my friendcode on his system down at his end it was frozen showing him as unregistered.I then tried to regain control closing the 3ds ect then when all else failed and I was considering removing the battery I decided to hold down the power button for around 5 sec and it turned off slowly.I then went back to my friends list and as soon as I heard the online sound it showed the person's mii but It froze I turned it off then went back the same thing may have happend again not sure but it isn't doing it now. I've clocked 97:43 of gametime on my machine so if it is faulty I'm sure I would know by now no black screen of death with error so far. That said my dsi used to shutdown randomly for no reason then It never did it again and that was for like six months so thats long enough to say it's not faulty it froze once too and the screen once kept on flickering but I saw none of these problems again for months so it is probrably just a glitch in my case.I will try out SSIV3D online and PKMNBLACK randomatchup both of which I've had no problems on so far before my freeze on the friendslist.Good luck to everyone on having their 3ds working properly. No bosd.

My DS lite has never froze once and I've been using it for three years.

Has anyone not got the BSOD screen while playing Ghost Recon?

Let me get this right. Does the BSOD appear when Wi-Fi is off?
