Yes please!! I hope this is the final price... but I don't see why it couldn't be, I always thought they should add a few versions, bundled with extra goodies. similar to the different versions of the PS3, just so those on a tight budget can at least get the console in the meanwhile and play the games.
I never got why people hated Super mario sunshine so much? It is an awesome game and honestly I prefer it to Super Mario 64 just because of the colourful levels and cool water mechanics (and yoshi of course!). So the voice acting was a bit cheesy? Who cares, it's a blast to play, glad some of you are playing it this weekend, maybe I should join you.
65 Pounds!!?!?! And Here I am thinking that 40 quid for a download copy of NSMB 2 is steep, especially seeing as the Americans are only paying 40 Dollars...
I look at the list and just about all of these games I'm actually saying "yeah that was an awesome game", or "really loved playing that". Having said that I would probably rate my personal top five as follows:
5. Super Mario Land 3D, (the one that finally convinced me to buy a 3ds and didn't disappoint)
4. Super Mario Sunshine. (Don't know why people hate this game, it's got so much going for it, and it's just a lot of fun)
3. Super Mario 64
2. Super Wario World
1. Super Mario Galaxy 2. (Yeah it's a sequel, but it improves on so many things in SMG that it deserves the spot more than it's predeccesor).
So yeah I like the 3d ones more clearly but man even just trying to decide which shouldn't be included is crazy. And heaven help us if you decided to include the mario RPG games, (Mario and Luigi and Paper Mario). Basically it just highlights the reason why Mario is king, 30 years and none of his main line games have been duds.
" pointless flame-wars about topics like who would win if Sonic and Mario got into a fight" Exactly! There's no point, because mario would win amaright?
Anyhow welcome on board good sir, look forward to reading what you have to say.
@Hyperstar96 Hehe exactly what I was thinking... like a sony exec saying the Wii U isn't impressive...
What I have always maintained is that the audience for gaming has exploded and where it was only a smaller group of nerds buying gameboys in the past, everyone with a smart phone is now counted as a 'gamer', but they're not. They may play rubbish casual games that idiots like Ngmoco produce but there will always be a group of those who want more out of a game and if anything that group will grow as more people are sucked into gaming. Consider the mobile gaming as a gateway drug which will suck more people in to our world...
Hmmm I think it's a little premature to write nintendo out of hardware production at this point. I think there is still a very big group of people who don't want to just play games on a cell phone or ipad but sit in front of their tv with a group of friends and have fun. Yes maybe the trend towards stupid ipad games will mean that nintendo is forced to work with a tab manufacturer in the future as a handheld gaming alternative, but there will always be a place for home based consoles, and with the Wii U what I really like is that it's combining some features of a handheld as well and the kids could play on the tablet controller whilst the TV is being used, it shows they are trying to think of new ways to combine the new trends.
Besides has anyone actually played any seriously good ipad games lately? Ones that they would sacrifice their home consoles for? Didn't think so. All thats happening is the market is now expanding to include casual cell-phone/ ipad users, so the market for real games and consoles is still there and probably will always be.
That price would be good and I think honestly the cost of technology is such that this advanced touch screen controller today won't be that expensive to produce considering you can get chinese ipad knock offs for less than a hundred dollars retail (http://www.dealextreme.com/c/tablets-1409 for the doubters) and those perform more functions than this wii u pad will need to. Sure the quality will be much better but the bulk of the heavy lifting will be done by the console so is it unreasonable to assume the controller shouldn't cost more than a hundred pounds, less if bundled with a system?
Everyone forgets the CPP is not just the extra stick, to integrate it they will need to add the extra Z buttons as well as keeping the original left and right buttons accessible. So the whole system would have to be much thicker just so the three or four games that use an extra circle pad would work. IE: NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. So this will certainly be a rather hilarious add-on, but what else are they supposed to do?
Personally I will stick with my smaller 3ds thanks. I like that this one fits in my pocket nicely.
Plus I really don't know what all the griping about not having a second circle pad is about? I've always said since the rumours surfaced that they would never include it on a new model simply because it could never be fully supported while there are still players with original 3DS's out there. Same reason the kinect and play can never be fully supported by every xbox and ps game released, they'd lose sales to people who didn't have the hardware. I have a CPP and it works well as an option for games like Metal gear solid 3D but I have never once felt I couldn't play a game without it, and I'm a lefty... So why add to the production costs?
We had the CD rom version for PC and in our naivety we thought it was awesome but played the Wii version for a bit of nostalgia years later and wow, what was wrong with 10 year old me??
I think with the spate of "2D" platforming games in recent years there's a risk that it will start to feel old. NSMB wii, 2 kirby games, dk cr, rayman origins are all excellent games but playing them one after the other the basic premise does get a bit tiresome, whereas super mario land 3d feels very fresh to play because it mixes things up so nicely. I'll still buy NSMB Wii U when I get a wii U but I doubt I'll feel as compelled to get 100% completion as I did with SMG 1 + 2 and Super mario 3d land.
I'll be playing Metal Gear solid 3D, and online Mario Kart 7 on my 3ds and hopefully some battlefield 3 on the PC. My bro might also come round so we can jam some Super smash brawl and Rayman on the Wii...
Yeah this article puts down exactly what I thought when they announced it, a great way to introduce casual gamers to their core franchises. Far too often I see second hand Wii's being sold without even one nintendo IP apart from wii sports, all third party movie spin offs and sports games, which says to me those people are missing the best part of nintendo. No mario, no metroid, no zelda?? But now if little bobby gets a massive kick out of playing the animal crossing mini game and suddenly he sees they're launching a full version of Animal crossing, of course he's going to desire that games above something else he's unfamiliar with. It shows good thought from nintendo as they really need to lower the average age of their core gamers, and if these kids don't know about all the other great nintendo IPs they'll never give them a try. Look at the way pit's appearance in SSBB increased the support for a full game.
I think a redesign won't happen until the 3DS is in the same profit region as the DS. Then they can afford the R & D costs. Why retool and remake a console that is only now starting to gain momentum? As for the second circle pad built in? Can't see that happening as it would be vastly underused, simply because developers aren't going to get behind a feature that isn't on all the models, so it'll only ever be an optional control method, which makes it no better than the circle pad pro, which is only supported by 3 or 4 games at the moment. Like with the camera on the DSI, only a few games added that in as random extra features, it couldn't be anything critical to the gameplay.
So I think for now the 3DS will stay as it is and maybe towards the end of it's life they'll do a redesign to give it a sales boost.
I did some of those thing without even thinking about it, especially in trying to come up with ideas that use the 3D effect properly, so many of the entrants are just pictures of themselves or their Miis... the ideal subject seems to be one where the depth is no more than 30 - 40 cm as this seems to be about the range the 3DS can display the best. There are some seriously cool pictures on the site though.
@aviator, if the two games are identical in every area apart from graphics then sure it's nice to have a better looking game but if I had a cheaper console that could still play a game the same as a more expensive one, I honestly wouldn't care. I mean really? People still enjoyed playing games on the PS1 and PS2 and still swear some of those are the "best games ever" so does the fact the consoles are more powerful now mean automatically those classics are now crap? Not at all, and if you disagree with that then you really are nothing more than a magpie and not a gamer.
Besides the main reason I play on any console is for the nintendo made games so there would be no adequate comparison on the other consoles. For "hardcore" games rather use the PC
I really think it's an incredibly stupid thing to worry about because as it is now some of the games that are doing very well are casual games with bad graphics. I mean it takes very little graphical prowess to run Angry birds. A lot of these jaw-droppingly beautiful games don't sell very well and if graphics are seriously all that "hardcore" games care about then they are douches. To my mind that guy breaking his world record for playing donkey kong is much more of a hard core gamer than any of these 14 year olds who think that graphics are all that matter.
Sure an upgrade will be nice, but I hate that somehow this becomes the standard by which a console is judged, surely it should be the quality and enjoyment of the games rather than how many pixels they squeeze into it. And for goodness sake, if graphics are the be all end all, buy a decent PC.
@Sony_70 Bill gates not involved in Microsoft, does he know this? Because apparently he's still making money as their Chairman, someone should really let the board know...
Oh and MS making more money has little to do with their gaming division which took a massive hit with all the recalls of their faulty crap plastic 360s that kept breaking down...
Yeah I think it's necessary, I have seen more than enough abuse and vulgarity on the internet to not want that creeping onto my gaming platform as well. If I want to be offended I'll rather visit an unmoderated forum on the internet. Hopefully private message between friends won't be filtered and then it will be all good. You can complain about it all you like but nintendo has always been very sticky on the point of being family friendly and protecting kids and when my kids are old enough to start playing I'll be happy to let them play on the wii U. To be honest if they didn't have filtering in place I would disconnect the wii U from the internet to avoid having a constant stream of penis drawings on my TV and just live my life as a disconnected troglodyte.
I think it won't be a problem at all is it's done right in the game. Having extra screens as a controller is nothing new (think zelda four swords on the cube or the dreamcast controllers), it just depends on how they are used.
I think the big advantages of this system will be in asymmetric multiplayer and in transferring the game onto the controller (like mario bros) so you can play while the TV is otherwise occupied. For other times/ normal single player games it should just be for secondary information you'd normally need to pause the game to interact with things like inventory or maps. Imagine how awesome a game like splinter cell could be if the pda functions were passed onto the tablet, things like the hacking game would feel a lot more real. And what about using it as a dedicated touch screen keyboard for animal crossing, like a messaging system for your online friends (that would be awesome)? Or imagine integrating the speakers and mic into an online FPS game where it replaces a headset as the means of communication. And don't forget that it could even be used as a drawing tablet in all kinds of games, like a built in U-draw tablet, except with games made by nintendo that don't suck like the THQ offerings (although pictionary is pretty fun).
I'm sure there will be some cheap and tacky uses but imagine the kind of things people could come up with if they used their imagination. People seem so scared of change, just because you've never played a game with two screens before, doesn't mean automatically that it's not going to work, and if it doesn't work for you maybe it's because you're a dinosaur who released one half-good game and still think you know what's what in the gaming world. And if nothing else can't you at least give nintendo credit for not being happy to just stick with the status quo of how games should be made and for trying to innovate new ways of getting people involved in gaming?
Yes I agree with most people, it needs to be like TTYD, or the original, not like SPM. But judging from the gameplay it seems the battled system is back to being turned based which is a start, and the stickers seems to be replacing the badges and upgrades, so all it needs now is some awesome partners and I will pre-order it.
Hardcore gamers are idiots. Period. It seems that in order to qualify as a hard core gamer you have to announce yourself as such. ("I'm a hardcore gamer and I'm pissed that my favourite isn't here") Fact is "hardcore" seems to normally just mean lots of gratuitous violence, language and sex, the games themselves are not even slightly difficult to play, I've had much more of a challenge grabbing all the stars in SMG2 than I ever did getting 100% completion from Batman Arkham City, and other "hardcore" games.
Nintendo has always had an image of being family friendly so forgive them for not jumping the shark and trying to be more "hardcore" than a PS3 (which had just as much shovelware as the Wii). Clearly this presentation shows that the new hardcore games will be able to run on the system easily and can offer new ways to enhance these games but they needed to ensure they are still attractive to the absolutely massive casual audience they tapped into with the Wii. Honestly if selling 40 million wii fits means nintendo has the profits needed to make more consoles, then I say that's awesome. The PS3 tried to be more hardcore and they only recently started turning a profit, casual gamers are were the moneys at and everyone benefits from a company that is doing well.
These games they've shown are just the beginning, there will be new zeldas, and metroids and 3d marios, and many more games you'll love. And of course COD and other core franchises will be on the console because they'd be idiots to ignore it. They released COD on the Wii for crying out loud.
I think overall they did an outstanding job in showing off the type of range the new console can handle and once the change-shy consumers see the final product and can play it for themselves I'm pretty sure it will be another success for nintendo. They've been doing this very successfully for longer than most of us have been alive so give them some credit and don't write them off until the console is in stores.. The only complete flop they've ever produced has been the virtual boy, all their other consoles have been profitable and produced excellent games. (just look at the top 50 list on gamerankings.com to see which publisher has more individual games listed than any other)
Like with the 3ds, everyone hated the launch games and they had to adjust their pricing but now suddenly interest is rising and it's starting to become a really desirable toy. I play on the thing more than my PC and "big boy" consoles. The Wii and DS were oustanding sellers and so maybe nintendo did get a bit complacent with the 3ds at first but this Wii U showcase shows they have learnt their lesson and there are some strong launch titles that will tie in perfectly with the new console. But everyone seems to want to just complain about the games that aren't there instead of focussing on the fact it's a brand new console, the tech is very cool and there are already some kick butt games scheduled for launch day.
Of course now that sony and microsoft have had a good look at the console we can expect their next releases to have a few borrowed ideas... lol.
Lol, people are actually worried they will forget about zelda? Seriously?
As for the other forgotten ninty IPs remember that it was 20 years before Kid Icarus had a new entry, but they actually listened to fans and made the game. The fact they've made a new pikmin also bodes well for other series that have been abandoned. F-Zero would be nice, but in terms of the longest abandoned series, Earthbound/ Mother is the most overdue for a new Worldwide entry.
@Sean007s Thiis is much better game than Super Paper mario. I don't know who thought it was a good idea to take mario and put him in an environment with all these strange polygon characters instead of the usual goombaverse. And SPM is not really an RPG, whereas TTYD is how rpgs' should be, short enough to not be repetitive but with enough to keep you busy for quite a while. It is hands down my favourite game on the cube and possibly second only to SMG2 on my list of all time best.
I think there won't be a redesign just yet. Historically the console redesigns usually only come when there is a design flaw (xbox 360), they need to reduce the cost (so they ditch some of the features, ala ps3) or the system has been selling buckets and they can afford the r&d cost to make a new one (like the original DS). At this point the 3ds is none of the above and they'll already be spending a lot of money on the Wii U R&D so I'll bet it'll be a little while before we see a 3DS "lite" or "XL".
Yeah I agree it's a pity that other conferences don't get the same coverage but at least in making all the major announcements at one event it makes it easier to follow what's going on. If they announced new hardware sometimes at the other events it would mean you'd need to keep up with all of them which could get a little old...
Pikmin pikmin pikmin pikmin. Seriously this was one of the most innovative titles on the gamecube, definitely more so than resident evil. And the second one was even better! I know it was on your short list, but come on it's a whole new IP, it needed a place! Other than that the list is pretty much spot on, although I'd place Paper mario much higher. TBH I think the overall quality of games on the cube is possibly higher than the WII, to much fluff and gimmicks on the wii. Not saying there aren't some amazing releases on the wii, just as a whole I'm a lot more likely to replay gamecube games than wii ones. Looking at the two lists, there are a lot more games I could think to add to the gamecube one, compared to the wii list.
To all the guys complaining about the gyro controls, I'd say two things. First of all, having played with them myself I find it frustrating and not nearly as powerful as the standard controls, and secondly, if it bugs you so much that other people are using them, why not just play with those controls yourself? It would also be a good way for you to see just how little impact it has on how the game plays.
As for the regional online matches only, I totally understand. With an action game like this the distance between the players will have a big effect on the lag of gameplay. I would never dream of playing a FPS game on American servers because my ping is over 250 and I get pwned. Same with this, the delay would mean what I see on my screen and what the opponent is seeing would be two different things, it has nothing to do with nintendo making a bad system, and everything to do with the physical limitations of the internet and games that are fast paced.

Re: E3 2012: Paper Mario: Sticker Star Shots and Details
Yes I agree with most people, it needs to be like TTYD, or the original, not like SPM. But judging from the gameplay it seems the battled system is back to being turned based which is a start, and the stickers seems to be replacing the badges and upgrades, so all it needs now is some awesome partners and I will pre-order it.

Skid to victory? Oh my...
Re: Reaction: Your Opinions on Nintendo's E3 Conference
Of course now that sony and microsoft have had a good look at the console we can expect their next releases to have a few borrowed ideas... lol.
Re: E3 2012: F-Zero is Coming to Wii U
Lol, people are actually worried they will forget about zelda? Seriously?
As for the other forgotten ninty IPs remember that it was 20 years before Kid Icarus had a new entry, but they actually listened to fans and made the game. The fact they've made a new pikmin also bodes well for other series that have been abandoned. F-Zero would be nice, but in terms of the longest abandoned series, Earthbound/ Mother is the most overdue for a new Worldwide entry.
Re: E3 2012: Watch the Nintendo Press Conference Live Here
Hot Damn! If E3 was a game, nintendo just won hands down. Did they announce a release date for the Wii U? If so I must have missed that.
Re: E3 2012: Paper Mario Sticker Star Out This Holiday Season
If this is more TTYD than SPM then it's a win, seriously can't wait for this one.
Re: Review: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (GameCube)
@Sean007s Thiis is much better game than Super Paper mario. I don't know who thought it was a good idea to take mario and put him in an environment with all these strange polygon characters instead of the usual goombaverse. And SPM is not really an RPG, whereas TTYD is how rpgs' should be, short enough to not be repetitive but with enough to keep you busy for quite a while. It is hands down my favourite game on the cube and possibly second only to SMG2 on my list of all time best.
Re: E3 2012: Yes, We Will See New 3DS Games Today
Yes please! Release date for paper mario would be awesome~
Re: Nintendo Denies 3DS Redesign, Wii U Price Revelation
I think there won't be a redesign just yet. Historically the console redesigns usually only come when there is a design flaw (xbox 360), they need to reduce the cost (so they ditch some of the features, ala ps3) or the system has been selling buckets and they can afford the r&d cost to make a new one (like the original DS). At this point the 3ds is none of the above and they'll already be spending a lot of money on the Wii U R&D so I'll bet it'll be a little while before we see a 3DS "lite" or "XL".
Re: Talking Point: Why Gaming Needs E3
Yeah I agree it's a pity that other conferences don't get the same coverage but at least in making all the major announcements at one event it makes it easier to follow what's going on. If they announced new hardware sometimes at the other events it would mean you'd need to keep up with all of them which could get a little old...
Re: Feature: The Best Games on GameCube and Wii
Re: Review: Mario Tennis Open (3DS)
