My first gaming love was the NES. I have owned every Nintendo system both home and portable. I bought a Wii U on launch day. I have Zelda prints framed and hanging up in my office. I am as big a Nintendo fan as you can get.
I was going to pick a Mini up on launch day- unaware of the lines and short stock- and called around all day to see if I could snag one, but to no avail. They have lost a customer. It was an impulse buy to begin with (already had an NES, albeit a barely working one). So now I'm asking the wife for a Steam gift card for Christmas of the same value. I'm not waiting, sorry.
This combined with the sorry Wii U lifecycle and the rumor that Zelda will be pushed to the summer means I am skipping the Switch for now. I'll get it eventually when it's sub $200 and loaded with extras. But, to me, a company that has had such an abysmal last 5 years needs to start stepping up their game otherwise they'll blow all the good will they have left with a shrinking fan base.
I'd like to see how it plays compared to the original. Because, honestly, the original plays like garbage. I remember getting bored enough for my buddies and I to try and tackle the game, but would always get frustrated with the lack hit detection. We fared better with skeet shooting.
I would like to see a sequel/remake to the game sometime in the future. Like a fully-fledged shooting gallery. Those were the best parts of those Wii Play games.
I know several of you have mentioned your shock at Angry Birds being $50. But, let's marinate on that a little bit. Someone needs to tell Rovio that nobody is into Angry Birds any more. And with them laying off a ton of people, it makes no sense to offer a game that you can get on a phone for $1 at the prices they are showing here. Either we will see the prices drop like a rock in the coming weeks, or Rovio will stick their heads straight up their own butts, keep their non-iphone/android prices that high, and watch their company go up in smoke.
Everyone on this board should advise people NOT to buy those games at those prices. It's the only way they'll learn.
@Letsgoretro I hear what you're saying, but I think it turned out to be too disorienting when flipped upside-down. Right would be left and vice versa. That makes it very confusing to most people. I can even imagine a veteran gamer (and karter) like myself getting hung up on that EVERY TIME. The complaints would be far louder than yours if they did it that way. I thought it was a waste, too, until they decided to include full film editing options. Now, I think it's kinda cool.
One other thing to think about: Not all gravity parts go upside-down. How would you handle the ones that turn on a wall? Or the Mario Circuit one that goes UP a wall? Either it won't make a difference or it will totally screw up the camera angle. And imagine the programming it would take to make each gravity part unique to its track??
I went home last week and spent some time with my family. But, every time I go home, I get together with a group of hardcore gamer friends that literally spend all day playing video games. And even though most of these guys cut their teeth of the N64 and Wii, they spend most of their days on the other two consoles (PS360). I fully expected for my WiiU to be greeted with a bit of sneer. A little bit of turning up of the nose if you will. Surely they would express disappointment with what was supposed to be Nintendo's big year and rub it in how bad the sales have been and how much more powerful the new consoles were. Heck, just to make sure it got some play time, I went out and bought Mario 3D World at full price pretty much on a whim. I honestly didn't think we'd play the WiiU other than trying out that one new game.
But, when everyone got there and settled in, without any hesitation at all, they saw all the games I brought with my WiiU and decided to put it on the big screen downstairs. We took turns playing 3D world and then switched over to Mario Kart Wii for a loooong time (nolstagia was a strong drug that day). After lunch we came back and played several rounds of Smash Bros and Goldeneye. I asked the host, Tim, if he had his Wii U hooked up on the upstairs TV. He did, so I introduced them to the awesomeness of ZombiU's Killbox. Man, they fought over who'd go next for hours. In between Wii U sessions, those who weren't playing, were on their 3DS doing Pokemon battles. So by about 6 PM, we had Goldeneye downstairs and ZombiU upstairs and Pokemon in between. It was so much fun.
Here I was thinking the WiiU would be side-lined and it ended up being the only home console we played that day. It served as a reminder to me that true gamers have mad respect for company that made Mario and that Nintendo IS AND WILL ALWAYS BE THE UNDISPUTED KING OF COUCH CO-OP.
I almost- almost- felt bad for Tim's brand new PS4 that sat untouched in the corner the entire time.
Have a Merry Christmas everybody and play lots of Mario World with your cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and kids tomorrow.
