No, it's not! This guy is as much of a PR liar as Reggie is! The proof comes from Game Freak. If the 3DS were getting a successor, not only would that undercut Swtich's main reason for owning it, Game Freak wouldn't even bother touching the Switch, because it wouldn't be a handheld. Game Freak already said numerous times they will NOT put Pokemon on anything other than a handheld.
The truth is that they know the 3DS is sinking, and by saying "oh, don't worry, keep buying it, because it's going to last forever, and it's getting this shiny new successor soon" that'll keep sales from tanking faster than they already are. If a true successor were coming that wasn't Switch, it'd be out already! The 3DS is now older than the original DS when the 3DS launched, and with Pokemon moving to Switch, that is a VERY clear sign Switch is just as much the 3DS's successor as the DS was to Game Boy (ie indirect successor, because Switch isn't a real successor to Wii U either- quit yapping about ports, the 3DS also has Wii U ports, is that also the Wii U's successor?).
"seemingly immortal" AHAHAHAA! That's a hilarious line, because Nintendo's own report says the 3DS dropped 65% year-on-year, so I guess dropping hard makes it immortal! It's also going to continue this massive slide as time goes on, because look at how retailers are treating it, it's getting less and less shelf space, which means less and less sales, which means less and less shelf space- it's going to be fully gone by the end of 2019, just watch.
@tourjeff that's the thing, this doesn't say how many already had a Switch versus how many new owners there are due to Smash. The official numbers from Media Create will be out Wednesday, and that will say- it's going to be interesting to see if the Switch jumped back up to the 200,000 level after Let's Go, or if it's still in the 100,000's.
For having the number 2 game, the 3DS's hardware sales were pretty flat week-over-week, and if you compare weekly sales year-over-year (don't unless you want a major disappointment), it's not looking good for the system in Japan.
Warning! Here are the weekly year-over-year sales (read at your own risk):
2017: New 2DS LL – 27,074 (20,712) New 3DS LL – 15,059 (12,431) 2DS – 3,192 (2,747) New 3DS – 248 (348)
Total: 45,573 (36,238)
2018: New 2DS LL – 7,401 (6,512) New 3DS LL – 2,692 (2,419) 2DS – 342 (952)
Total: 10,435 (9,883)
That's kind of a massive drop- a 78% drop to be specific (yeah, it's only selling 22% of what it sold last year at this time).
@redwingleader they're all gone outside of the Nintendo New York store, and I doubt they're ever coming back, this thing seems to be in the phase out time now with all that's gone, and the fact "new" games are nearly all remakes/ports.
@westman98 7 months later and no Zelda announcement for 3DS tells me it wasn't true. As you see every 3DS release in 2018 so far has fizzled, and failed to even chart longterm. This shows how the market is dying- pretty fast too as Nintendo reported 65% drops year-on-year. Do that again, and it'll be selling less than Wii U in 2016! Nintendo doesn't want to say that, but it's true, 65% drop of 1 million is 350,000, not exactly stellar! Not to mention too that Pokemon, the one franchise keeping 3DS alive is about to move to Switch (more than Let's Go) next year, so that drop is likely to be even bigger than that.
@Flippedfoxdrei Game Freak makes them, not Nintendo, and they've already said they're done. This president of Nintendo is just doing more PR, because the 3DS IS going to die in 2019- it's already got 65% year-on-year sales drops, and that was before Pokemon moved over to Switch. When the next mainline Pokemon moves over in 2019, expect the 3DS to have even larger drops next year, and that's going to mean selling FEWER than Wii U did in its final year (less than 800,000)!! There's no way this thing sees 2020, not with Pokemon moving over, because Pokemon carried it the last few years.
@Trajan if you look at their quarterly reports, the 3DS is gone, the New 3DS XL shipments were so low, it's on its way to being discontinued (from the fact it only shipped 10,000 to Japan all year, it looks like it already is discontinued in Japan). The 2DS versions are the only thing they're making now. That tells me there really is a cheaper version of Switch coming soon, they're cutting the highest priced 3DS model to make room on the market for it.
@Saprozoic they should compare Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon from last year to Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee, because they're going to be pretty close, if not more for Let's Go. Plus, Ultra were the most recent releases technically.
Wouldn't the latest entries in the series be Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon from last year? Those weren't these runaway selling games either, and as you point out, 3DS had a higher install base. Compare Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon to Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee, they're likely more comparable.
@westman98 one problem with your assessment is that you're giving Switch only 5 years as a platform, and Kimishima/Miyamoto both said it's expected to go beyond 6, so 2022 won't be late in Switch's life, it'd be closer to just over halfway, especially if they hold true to their statement- likely will given how this can function as a handheld, and we've all seen how Nintendo loves to constantly refine handhelds, giving this then a 10 year lifetime. Plus, keep in mind Sun/Moon came out in 2016 and that was when Go was tearing up the charts and dominating everything, so the 3DS got to be the beneficiary of that excitement, translating to Sun/Moon sales, well until Ultra Sun/Moon took that away in 2017, as if they don't come out, it's very likely that Sun/Moon would be the highest selling games on the platform.
Nintendo Co Ltd (Nintendo, Japan) is a far different company today than they were in 1889. That company wasn't even called the same. Today's Nintendo really began in the 70's after years of branching out trying to find a niche that would make them an international company. In 1980 they struck gold with the Game & Watch, allowing them to set up the company responsible for opening up and operating the world's largest video game market- Nintendo of America. NOA didn't begin until 1980, that's really the true birth of modern Nintendo. They went from being all over the place in toys, cards, taxis, to being 99% focused as a game maker. Not to mention that before 1980 they were strictly a Japan only company, not an international conglomerate that they are today, owning (albeit partly after the sale of their majority stake) a major league baseball team. North America is above and beyond the largest video game market on the planet. When Nintendo setup Nintendo Of America, they officially became an international company, introducing not only their Game & Watch line, but also multiple arcade cabinets which were popular at the time. Until the 1950's, all Nintendo was is just some small card maker located in Kyoto, Japan. The 1980's saw them grow into the largest player in a market originally created and owned by America. Miyamoto and Yokoi's creations really allowed them to go international with Donkey Kong and Game & Watch. Those two should really be celebrated for making modern Nintendo Nintendo.
@Nincompoop No, Nintendo Of America had portable devices before home systems, because the Color TV games was at the time a home console, being a Pong clone, and released in 1977, 3 years before the Game & Watch line debuted. Also, in 1977 Nintendo, Co Ltd didn't have any subsidiaries- ie there was no Nintendo of America in 1977.

A remake of a game the 3DS can already play. Nice...

Gotta do something, so far only Pokemon Go has generated serious revenue! Most of that wasn't even to Nintendo!

@Aurumonado yup, like mobile, anyone who just downloads it counts.
