I really wish Nintendo would go third party. I enjoy their games, but I can't justify buying separate hardware that I don't even like just to play them.
I sure wouldn't buy a mario game on a touch only device, but 300 million people would, and releasing the NES Super Mario Bros. wouldn't cannibalize the 3DS in any way shape or form. The question here is whether Nintendo wants to make money, if the answer is yes, then release some games for IOS/Android.
@LDXD I think that the difference for Sony is that they create new franchises to accompany new consoles, rather than re-inventing old franchises like Nintendo. Though that doesn't seem to hold as true for the PS4 with Killzone and Infamous already announced.
@Nestalgic Odds are that they "sold out" of Nintendo stock because they stopped buying more. As @MK_II said, Nintendo is likely wishing to charge Amazon more than they are willing to pay for their hardware.
@mariobro4 I guess I should say that the hardware isn't able to compare with other devices that are out now. Compared to what the load times WERE, its great, but compared to almost any other modern device, and the promises of the PS4's speed(we'll see once its released) it's out-dated and it shouldn't be something that people have to accept.
It's much better, but still too slow. with my PS3, it isn't exactly instant to get back to the menu(it is instant, but it takes the icons a few seconds to start loading in), but that came out over 6 years ago. With phones able to jump between apps less than a second, and even the vita being lightning fast compared to this, its hard to accept this speed. The Wii U, hardware and operating system wise, is most certainly not "next gen".
The game would absolutely be better on vita, It would control better, look a little bit better, and would likely have online play. As far as I'm concerned he is absolutely right about this. Is the game unplayable on 3DS, no. Does 3D matter, no. Are two screens better, rarely but there are some cool applications for visual styles.. Should the 3DS screens be bigger and higher resolution, Absolutely!
@element187 @TimboBaggins If you add the 3DS model sales together, they fall JUST short of the vita (you add the number to the left, the parenthesis number is last weeks sales). It's not really a matter of the 3DS selling poorly, It is still consistently selling over 60,000 units weekly in Japan(which is unheard of), the fact that the vita can match those numbers(even momentarily) is the news. If it means more support for the vita, then it's good news.
@Ark_Sin Think about that a little more. Do you really think that just because people are under the same banner of a country, with the few million of them separated from the rest of the world, they wouldn't find something to disagree on? Civil wars do exist you know.
@DaemonSword No, but I think that's because Sony waited longer (too long) to drop the price. People felt burned by Nintendo because they dropped the price just 6 months after launch, and to a more severe degree. Which is why the ambassador program was awesome!
@HawkeyeWii Considering the $70 claim was made by Pachter in this same presentation, tt should be taken with a grain of salt. A Sony executive said that PS4 games will cost $60 dollars, which I hope is true. More so, I hope that their push for downloadable games(and presumably Microsofts as well) will result in Mid-tear games being released for $30-40.
@Spark_Of_Spirit Its been stated that PS4 games will run in 1080p, though I've also seen somewhere that Killzone was running at 30 fps. I think it's fair to say that the PS4 will be able to run games as well as anything else, even a PC. It just comes down to the quality of the development.
To those complaining about the innovation remark, it's important to note that he doesn't say that the RAM is innovative, but that innovation is likely to come from it. He means that developers won't be restrained by the hardware (in theory) so they can develop their vision without being held back.
Now will developers be able to take advantage of this in a world where most publishers are scared to try much of anything new, probably not.
I tend to agree with him on his predictions for Wii U sales. I see it as being similar to the N64, No third party support but quality Nintendo titles will keep it chugging along. I don't think that the Wii U is the console that the market wants. However I don't think that the Wii U will be Nintendo's last home console (though I do hope it is as I'd love to see them become a 3rd party publisher). There would have to be a major upheaval in the console market (which some are predicting), but I think that there will still be a demand for home consoles for years to come.
While some people look on this generation as being less popular than in the past, the overall sales of the big three consoles are a huge jump over the last generation(though the consoles have overstayed their welcome).
As you get older and you aren't able to do as much as you used to, having anything physical that you can easily do for fun is both empowering and uplifting.
@Zodiak13 "crappy analog sticks"? That is the last thing that I'd expect someone to complain about. I suppose I could understand someone disliking them when compared to a console controller, but I'd say that they are indisputably the best seen on a handheld.
As a side note, the 3DS's circle pad is nice, but it can't compete with the accuracy of actual upright sticks, And the lack of a second pad is a real problem for me in monster hunter. It worked fine for the PSP because you could claw to reach the d-pad, but that isn't an option with the 3DS, which really limits the game for me.(I only played the demo for 3 Ultimate).
These micro-transactions in full priced games are a problem, but they only exist because people buy them. As long as EA keeps making money off things like micro-transactions, DLC, and online passes, they will keep implementing them.
I don't think these practices are inherently bad, but the price is the issue for me. Micro-transactions only belong in free-to-play games, and DLC should bring new experiences, not small enhancements to the game that you paid for. I pay for a game expecting the developers vision and a complete product.
@0LD_SK0OL_PUNK I don't think the length of time that they have been out changes the weekly sales. As far as I can tell, they are both currently overpriced with too few appealing games, and that is why they aren't selling well. As my post above states, the vita is trying to fix these issues next month, and the Wii U will pick up sales once Nintendo Supports it better.
I'm curious to see what kind of sales jump the vita will get with both the price drop and the Japanese titles coming out over the next month and a half. I'm sure it will do quite well for awhile (maybe even 3DS numbers. . .) but I doubt will keep up.
I wouldn't say that it led the way for retro styled games, but it certainly embraced the trend in a big way. I think the reason for that is the download limit made it hard to put anything more complicated on it . I'd say that PC was the place where it really began with the wide availability of cheap downloadable games from indie devs who have been pushing the retro games anyway.
@XCWarrior There is NO way that the PS4 or next Xbox will cost $600. The only reason the ps3 cost that much was because of the bluray player. I wouldn't be completely surprised of they came in at $500, but it's much more likely that there will be at least one SKU for each console available for $400. The components aren't THAT great, and they are all mass produced/stock pc parts which = cheap.
To people saying that PS4/Xbox games are the same old shooters over and over again, that's just silly. Besides the fact that nearly every third party games comes to both their systems, they also make first party games with a lot of variety. If you don't want to play shooters on the consoles, then don't buy the shooters. Buy a game from any of the other genres, because they are all present and supported.
The PS4 is definitely looking good, but not incredible, which is to expected considering this is the first reveal with the console not coming out for 9 months. The main draw for me with the PS4 announcements (besides all the Sony 1st party games, they announced that all 12 of their studios are working on PS4) is the convenience. They claimed that you can start playing downloads instantly, and you can put games into save states, which is rad. I'm getting one, now I'm just curious to see how Microsoft will react to the PS4.
I assume the PS4 version would only be better in that the world might be more vibrant. They could have more going on at once, like more people in the streets or animals running about. As long as the Wii U version has the same amount of content, and it performs well with consistent frame-rate, i'm sure it'll be great.
edit - of course, the PS4 version could also be better if the proposed social aspects actually enhance the experience. Nintendo is changing the way you interact with games, while Sony is changing the way that you experience games.
This is a joke. both the PR joke, and the people on this site. I get preferring Nintendo, they are awesome, but so many of these comments seem to be ridiculously blind to the idea of any good games appearing on a non-Nintendo console.
@cyrus_zuo I think you're upset for the wrong reasons, they won't take away different ways to interact with the game that the gamepad provides, they just won't include those extra types of interactions on the other versions. That's the way I understand the situation. Now you Should be upset about the needless delay.
I'm sure it's been said above, but I don't have the time to scroll through this massive list of comments!, but can we confirm that this is the most comments on any Nintendolife post ever?
Does anyone actually expect the Wii U to do extremely well? If it has a full 5 year life cycle, I'm guessing it could make it to 50 millions units, though I wouldn't hold my breath. I'm sure it'll turn out to be a good console with great games, but considering the type of machine that it is, and the time that it was released, I wouldn't expect much.
I'm at the point now that I hope the Wii U doesn't get third party support. I'd like to see Nintendo be a third party publisher for ALL platforms. I say that because Nintendo hasn't released a system since the SNES that didn't have at LEAST one major flaw. I appreciate that Nintendo is trying to bring something different to the table, but I just haven't been motivated to use their systems for anything other than Nintendo games, and them becoming third party would save me some cash.
Nintendo wants Sony and Microsoft to use tablet controllers because that's the only way that they can guarantee third party support for the Wii U after the competition comes out.
The third party support will likely fall away by 2014. The new consoles from Sony and Microsoft won't blow the Wii U away in sheer graphics, but the more technical aspects such as world size and the amount of action that can happen on screen will be drastically improved judging by the alleged specifications of the next gen consoles. I predict that Unless the next gen consoles come out at a price over 400-500 dollars, Third party developers will flock to those systems and develop for them along with PC.
I'd be worried about graphics if I was Nintendo, I feel like the Wii U will be close enough to the next gen to allow third party developers to release the same games with lower fidelity, but if it is too far behind like the wii, then the third party support will dry up after the first two years.
It's good that he is wishing Nintendo good luck, though it is probably true that Sony is looking at the success of the Wii U with great interest. It would be interesting if Sony bundled vita's with PS 4's and marketed it as direct competition to the Wii U. It could conceivably benefit both companies, as It would increase the odds that developers would actually use the secondary screens in meaningful ways.
Like many people have rightfully pointed out, buying a ps3 and a vita will run you $200 more than the base model wii U. Granted you're getting WAY more content with the PS, it isn't commercially viable. The vita ps3 crossplay will never reach the impact that the wii U will, though I'm willing to bet that next year, We could see a $350-$400 dollar ps3-vita bundle. That could be very interesting

I don't expect this to be true, but it makes since from a hardware standpoint that it would drop to 250-300 for the holidays. I personally think that both bundles should cost $50 less than they do now, but Pachter made a good point that the Nintendo loyal will buy it anyway.
All the Wii U has to do, from a technical perspective, to impress me is for the controller to show on screen action with no input lag. The only issue that I see in the long run with the Wii U's power is the porting of third party games. Nintendo could see a similar situation as with the wii where games can't be ported from PS360 because of hardware limitations, which obviously limited the wii's software lineup. Though I suspect that even if the Wii U is only slightly more powerful than the HD twins it will still be in the same ballpark as I expect a more modest jump in power this time around for the competition.
