Looks pretty good for an 8-bit game, but graphically speaking, I think Little Samson still has it beat. The music is catchy, but it doesn't even compare to Mega Man 2. I would have preferred a Mega Man game that accurately represents Keiji Inafune's anime-style artwork, but since everyone is begging to have their nostalgia serviced, I guess I'm out of luck. At any rate, a new Mega Man game is being released, and I'm excited about that. I'm not another one of these "kids" everyone keeps mentioning that only appreciates cutting edge graphics. I'm 26-years old, and I have a massive collection of NES games; if I didn't like NES games... well, you get the idea. At the same time, I'd like to see the Wii's hardware be used to its full potential, and Mega Man 9 falls well below the mark. Apparently, the 8-bit aesthetic was a conscious design choice, and I just need to appreciate it for what it is. However, I can't help but wonder what a Mega Man game with Wind Waker-esque graphics would have been like. Ultimately, Mega Man 9 will succeed or fail based on its gameplay, and I'm hoping that it doesn't disappoint.
@x.SuperMario.x Explain to me how bland, uninspired, NES graphics make a Mega Man game more appealing than a crisper, cleaner looking game with a larger color palette to work with? You're letting your nostalgia overpower your judgment. If it were any other game, it would be heavily criticized by reviewers for not taking full advantage of the system's hardware. People like yourself, who are manipulated by their nostalgia, give Capcom an excuse to be lazy.
Not that my television is bursting at the seams with PSN or XBOX Arcade ads, but are these types of ads really necesary? Chances are, if you own a wireless router, you've already perused the Wii's catalog of online titles. Perhaps a Nintendo Online Awareness Program would be effective in educating the geriatric masses that their white boxes are able to do more than play Wii Sports. Otherwise, it's an effort in futility.
Local 4-player is probably a bad idea; if you've ever played the Contra series or Sub Space Emissary with a friend, you're already aware of the unavoidable frustrations involved. However, a full-blown, 4-player mode would be nigh unplayable. Unlike beat-em-ups and certain other genres, platformers aren't suited to having that many players on-screen. Online play would be a smoother alternative.
Really, what's the appropriate way to use the terms "geek" or "otaku" ? Last I heard, "geek" was a slang term for an intelligent/eccentric person with no social life. Seriously, if Laurent Fischer had called Nintendo fans "idiots" and later apologized, he would have convinced some of you that he meant it in a nice way.
A game on the VC that's worse? How 'bout China Warrior, Spelunker, Donkey Kong Jr. Math, The Legend of Kage, or Super Thunder Blade? The VC's chocked full of games more craptacular than City Connection.
Call me crazy, but wasn't the VC supposed to make life easier? Instead of buying every system and every game you were supposed to be able to download them on your Wii. However, it has become an even greater inconvenience to have to erase or redownload VC games on your Wii. It's actually less trouble to just to own the old systems, and buy some games that you like. I personally think that the collective complaints of the VC community are justified. The only games I purchase on the VC anymore are import titles or rare games.
Earthbound is one of my favorite games. That being said, I don't mind "weird" games. If a "weird" game means an entirely new gameplay experience, then I'm all for it. I'm not one to condemn creativity and innovation in video games, If you are repulsed by the premise of this game, then you are obviously taking this game too seriously. This game doesn't even take itself seriously; if I'm not mistaken, it's supposed to be funny. This is the very reason why game developers don't take chances with video games anymore; if it's too "weird," then no one will buy it. So what happens? We get yet another first-person shooter. Seriously folks, broaden your horizons a bit; try something "weird." You may be surprised by how much you enjoy it.
Simultaneous, 2-player action is what made Double Dragon great. Without this feature, I really don't see the point. I remember being so disappointed when I bought this for my NES, but I still played the crap out of it.
First of all, I think you've put together a pretty good list, but if you judged Dragon Warrior by the same criteria as Earthbound, I don't think it would have made your list either.
1) The combat system in Earthbound is practically identical in Dragon Warrior, but you don't have to deal with random battles in Earthbound.
2) The graphics in Earthbound may have been considered "average," but Dragon Warrior also had average graphics for its time, and honestly, Earthbound's visuals are a real improvement over Dragon Warrior.
3) Not that this is part of the criteria you mentioned in comment 15, but Dragon Warrior's story is about as cliche' as you can get; although Earthbound followed a common, save-the-world premise, it doesn't suffer from lack of originality.
Also, I've never played Legacy of the Wizard for the NES: I'll have to check it out.
This is a little off topic, but in the latest issue of Nintendo Power I read that SNK is releasing a classics compilation disc with 16 games on it! If I'm not mistaken, that's larger than the NEO-GEO's entire library on the VC. It seems like a strange move to me.
I had intended to buy this game for the NES. From what I've seen, it seems like the Master System's version has richer colors. The NES version has a Kirby, side-scroller aesthetic for the background.
Being a Smash Bros. fan, I feel obligated to purchase additional content. Any and all features should be made available in the final version. If Nintendo really doesn't have the time to implement all these features into the game, that's one thing, but I better not see additional characters and stages available for purchase right off the bat. Something equivalent to a robust, map pack crammed with features would be acceptable, but I hate being nickel and dimed to death. Given the zealous, Smash Bros. fan base, Nintendo stands to make a nice profit from this kind of venture.
The needless abundance of Pokemon and Kirby characters would definitely push me to pay a little extra for an additional character. I like Pokemon, but it's become a bit excessive with how many of them are included in this game. Assist trophies do not do proper justice to some of the characters that could have been included.
Ideally, I'd like to have every game I've purchased available to play whenever I want to, but I have to narrow my selection down to the best of the best. Nintendo needs to forget about the irrelevant DVD add-on and shift their focus to what matters most - the games. Seriously, if I have to buy a stand-alone DVD player, why would I purchase a Wii add-on?
I remember playing this in the arcade; by all accounts, it was a good game. I've never actually played the NES version, but I figured it was bad. Gumshoe, for the NES, was a pretty interesting light-gun title; I'd love to see it find its way on the VC. However, as many of you have already stated: there's little purpose in buying a game like this without a Zapper or some kind or Wii remote functionality.
Well, there's only one row of four buttons to pull off basic attacks. Typically, there's a total of six buttons or two rows of three buttons on an arcade stick. The top set would allow weak, medium, and fierce punching attacks while the bottom provides the same setup for kicks; to me, one row of four buttons seems limiting. Also, it really looks like I would have to place my right hand in what looks to be an awkward position. It would seem advantageous to have these buttons placed horizontally rather than at an angle. To be fair, I've never actually used this controller, so I suppose there's a possiblity that I might gel with it. However, based on the button placement, I'm skeptical about how it would perform.
I like a good arcade stick, but the button layout is pretty strange compared to what I usually see; it seems like it would be uncomfortable to use. Quite frankly, the controller doesn't look optimized for fighting games which would be my only justification for buying something like this. I guess it would work good enough for Top Hunter or Magician Lord. If I'm not mistaken, I think Hori arcade sticks for the Wii are still available for purchase, and they retain a more traditional design.
Not that I mind imitation, but it's pretty obvious that this title borrows its core, gameplay mechanics from Pac-Man. The weird religious aesthetic coupled with its limited release have piqued my interest. Devil World certainly has superior, visual appeal to Pac-Man, but I find myself wondering if the gameplay is as outdated as Ice Climbers or Donkey Kong.
I really never enjoyed playing this game the first time around, but Snowboard Kids was certainly fun; the multi-player mode was especially addicting, but racing solo wasn't bad either. I suppose if Mario Kart and 1080 Snowboarding reared a chilid together, Snowboard Kids would be the end result.
If not for all the gaming magazines I frequented at the time (and still do), I wouldn't have known the Neo Geo existed. A pretty good system all in all, but in retrospect, I wouldn't have traded it for my SNES.
I learned from a Game Videos interview that the coding for the original Nights was so specific to the Saturn that it would be next to impossible to transfer onto the VC. Because of the sheer number of blocks this game would consume, if I'm not mistaken, Nintendo might not allow it anyway. Here's to a Wii (or add-on) with additional memory!
The lackluster titles released this week would have provided NEO GEO with an opportunity to release a GOOD game. I believe the aforementioned system is up to a whopping four games; certainly they have a much wider selection of titles than they let on.

Nintendo is just overly selective about what games they decide to release. The VC has seen its share of import games.
