@CharlieSmile I would argue that Smash is the best fighting game ever made. It is just beyond unique and this latest installment is a literal masterpiece.
Nintendo needs to buy Castlevania. Seriously, Castlevania and Contra and Pro Evolution Socccer must be saved and would fit is really well with current Nintendo IP.
Just buy those 3 IPs and Konami can go to hell for all I care.
Both Zelda's are a must have for me. I am new to Zelda (and, indeed, Nintendo since the original NES days). The only Zelda games I have played are Windwaker and the original NES game. However, after Windwaker, I am hooked. So both of those are must haves for me.
Then there is Star Fox, which looks simply amazing. My kids will also ensure I get both Lego Marvel Avengers and Pokken Tournament.
SMT Fire Emblem looks like a game I could really like and, indeed, looks better than the new Persona. The major problem here however is whether they give this a M-rating or a T-rating. If it is rated T, I will almost certainly pick this up as well.
Xenoblade Chronicles X is a fine wine. It is a masterpiece. The more you play it, the better it gets. The more it ages, the better it gets.
Xenoblade Chronicles X is to gaming what Star Wars is to movies. It is a hidden masterpiece that cannot be fully appreciated without dedicating some time to it. But make no mistake, it WILL go down in history as one of the greatest games of this generation...perhaps of all time.
Aren't most people buying it digital for the data packs? I would assume that we are going to have to wait for digital numbers on this one. Too early to tell how it is selling.
Xenoblade Chronicles X is the best JRPG game I have ever played — and I am a huge fan of Final Fantasy. Really, the only Final Fantasy games that could come close are Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy X, but even those are not as good as this new Xenoblade.
Virtual console remains probably the most underrated reason to buy a Wii U. Indeed, the Virtual Console makes the Wii U a retro gamer's paradise.
I would daresay that fee online play (i.e., no monthly subscription fees) and access to the Virtual Console justify the price of a Wii U all by itself. Add in the comparatively low hardware cost, great performance, quality controllers, off-tv play, and (above all) QUALITY EXCLUSIVE GAMES, and there really is no reason why anyone should not purchase a Wii U.
EA is afraid of Nintendo. They don't see Nintendo as the leading console seller (which they are: Wii U/3ds > PS4/Vita), they see Nintendo as the number one software and games developer. This means Nintendo = competition with EA from EA perspective. EA wants a gaming world where the console market is 100% controlled by the third-parties and Nintendo is really the only thing that stands in their way from completing that world vision. EA = the evil galactic empire.
Adding fuel to the fire is the fact that Nintendo makes much better games than EA in general. EA and several others who fear a console market where Nintendo remains the king will do ANYTHING to destroy the big N.
Which is fine by me. Personally, I decided a long time ago to support Nintendo and never buy another EA title. Thirteen years later and this personal commitment has worked just fine for me. If third parties want my money, they will have to start supporting Nintendo. Otherwise, I will just continue to pay and play Nintendo first parties and love every minute of it.
Big win for Nintendo. As an international tax lawyer, I can say this win in huge for the big N. Piracy is a huge problem for these companies that derive a vast majority of their profits from IP and software. If you want to play the games. Then buy them. Or, wait a few months and buy them when the price goes down. Do not support piracy.
By all means buy a new console this season, but I would argue to buy a Wii U first. Most of the “exclusives” on the Xbox One and Playstation 4 are just PC games that have been ported to these systems. In contrast, the Wii U has some great titles that are REAL exclusives. In my opinion, the Wii U is the much better console for several reasons:
1. Full Backwards Compatibility with Wii Games and Controllers: The Wii U is the only console this gen where the controllers and the games are fully backward compatible with the previous generation. This means that if you already own a Wii, Wii games, and Wii controllers, then the Wii games and the Wii controllers can be played and used on the Wii U. You do not have to get rid of your Wii gaming library you probably spent hundreds of dollars on.
2. Better and More Actual Exclusives: Again, most of the exclusives titles on the Xbox One and the Ps4 are PC games that have been ported to these systems. If you have a PC, you can play Fallout 4, Witcher 3, Star Wars Battlefront, Diablo III, etc. You do not necessarily need a new console to play these games. Wii U exclusives on the other hand can only be played on the Wii U. Games like Supersmash Brothers, Xenoblade, Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition, Lego City Undercover, Bayonetta, Super Mario Brothers 3d World, Fast Racing Neo, Zelda, Star Fox, etc., can only be played on the Wii U and are not found on any other gaming system or the PC.
3. Better Local Multiplayer and Couch Co-op: Sony and Microsoft have made drastic moves this generation away from local multiplayer and couch co-op. For example, Sony’s new driving game “Driveclub” is single player and online player only — you cannot race your friends and family members on the same couch. In contrast, the Wii U has far more titles for local multiplayer and cooperative play. Mario Kart 8 and Fast Racing Neo for example are both stellar driving games that support 4-5 player local co-operative play and up to 8 players online. For social gaming, the Wii U is by far the best option. 4. More Highly Acclaimed Family-Friendly Titles: Most titles that have been released for the PS4 and Xbox One are m-rated games. As gaming systems have become more sophisticated over the last decade, these “mature” titles have become increasingly realistic and graphic. Games like Fallout 4 and the Witcher three are far from being appropriate for gamers under the age of 17. For example, the Witcher 3 has ample full frontal nudity and very graphic sex scenes. In contrast, most titles for the Wii U are rate E (for everyone), E10 (for everyone over the age of 10), and T for teen (i.e., appropriate for teens).
5. Cheaper System: The Wii is being sold for on average over $50-$100 less than the other systems. This means you can spend more money on things that matter, like games. Several stores are selling the Wii U with the gamepad, Super Smash Brothers, and Splatoon for $250. That basically means you are getting two $60 games and the console hardware and gamepad controller and accessories for $130. That is a steal.
6. Something for Everyone: The Wii U is just not about kids games either. Bayonetta II is an M-rated title that one game of the year a couple of years ago and can only be played on the Wii U. Likewise, the new Xenoblade is one of the most highly anticipated games for all consoles this December.
7. The Gamepad is Highly Innovative and is Great for Off Tv Play: The controller that comes with the Wii U (i.e., the gamepad) opens up a whole new world of opportunity in gaming. But the best benefit I have found is that Dad can watch the college football game on TV while the kids can play their games on the gamepad.
In short, the Wii U may just be the most underrated console of all time. Get the Wii U first.
@TwilightAngel As I posted, I am 37 year old father of three. I have not owned a Nintendo console since the original NES. (I was a fan of Sega and then the first two playstation consoles.) But, I have been a console gamer long since many here were probably born.
Don't mean to sound like a fanboy (since I have never really been a fan of Nintendo until very recently), but as a long-time family-friendly gamer and now father of 4 young kids who LOVE gaming with their Dad and other friends on the couch, I am SUPER disappointed in both the PS4 and the XBOX ONE this generation. Not following the herd and really far from a Nintendo fan in general.
As far as playing the games is concerned, several of our friends and our kids friends have Wii Us (literally everyone in the neighborhood) and; yes, I have played these titles. Went over to a party recently at a friend's house and played his Wii U with his and our kids. Couldn't believe how much better these games were than the top-rated "games" I had for my XBOX ONE.
Stand by what I said. I DARE you to find me a decent multiplayer platform game on the XBOX other than Rayman Legends, which interestingly enough is also on the Wii U. Fighting games? Super Smash is probably the funnest thing I have played in years. That, and the new Pokken Tournament is looking amazing (definitely will buy for my 6 year old and 8 year old who love Pokemon already). Adventure and RPG? Child of Light looks no different on the Xbox/PS4 than on the Wii U. I played a little Wind Waker HD and thought it was great. The new Zelda screens take my breath away. Racing? Yup, it is way better with the Wii motion control and steering remote. Almost bought a PS4 solely for Driveclub until I recognized that it has NO LOCAL MULTIPLAYER TO SPEAK OF! Tell me how Driveclub is somehow better than Mario Kart 8, which I ended up playing until midnight the other night.
I readily admit I am an old dude and maybe my idea of gaming is just way too outdated; but when I was a kid the whole point of gaming was to have a blast with your family, friends and girlfriends. Am I missing something? Isn't that what gaming is?
In all seriousness (and maybe I am just a really old man — (which I am ), but who buys a RACING game that is solely single player and online only?? Where is the fun in that?
I guess what I am saying is this: if you were a parent gamer with 4 young gamer kids, you would be pretty darn disappointed in the new XBOX and PS4 as well. When PS4 purposefully scraps the new Jak & Daxter half way through development in favor of yet another m-rated horror title, then you really have no choice but to be very disappointed in this choice. When Xbox gets Smite as an exclusive, but decides to just make it solo or online play only (no local co-op) you really have no choice but to be very disappointed. (Note: it is not like PS4 and XBOX haven't had the chance either. We are now over two years into this next gen — and still NOTHING. Heck, even Kingdom Hearts III still has a "TBD release date.")
From my part and for my gaming needs and those of my family, Nintendo is the only console this gen that deserves my money. If selling my Xbox and buying a Wii U makes me a Nintendo "fan," well so be it because they are by FAR the only ones who deserve it. Like dereq said, Nintendo has something for everyone. To a middle-aged long-time family-friendly gamer and family man, I couldn't agree more with dereq. Hence that is where my money will be going this gen. To others who may be in the similar boat I was in, buyer beware when it comes to anything but Nintendo this gen.
@Caryslan I appreciate your comment but (from my perspective) it really only serves to further prove my point. The Xbox is a great console for single adult gamers who love to play first person shooter games, sports games, and M-rated titles by themselves or online only. It is an absolute trash system for anyone else especially in the family oriented and local multiplayer gaming crowd.
Single Male Gamer vs. Parent Gamer and Lawyer (with 4 young gamer kids) — my point is there is a difference.
You said Fallout 4 over Xenoblade. I say you are comparing apples to steaks. Both are futuristic RPGs, yes. But one is a very mature rated M. The other is "rating pending" but is anticipated to be a very mild T or a mild E10. Can you see how big of a difference this is for my family's gaming? One is a game that I can and will be able to play with my kids. The other is one that I wouldn't even allow in my home. One is looking to be everything my kids and I would want and more. The other is absolutely worthless.
You said Mortal Kombat X. Again, a very mature rated title. Compared to Super Smash Bros Wii U, this (again) is really no comparison. One is trash to me, the other is a 9.8 IGN rated masterpiece of a multiplayer fighting title that is family appropriate.
You said Forza. Again, almost trash. Forza allows for what, two local co-op split screen? How is that at all comparable to Mario Kart 8 (9 rating on IGN) that allows up to 8 players for me and my kids and their friends? Also, ALL racing games I hold are better on the Wii U thanks to the Wii U steering wheel and motion controls. Don't believe me, then try playing Need for Speed Most wanted on the Xbox and then with the motion controls on the Wii. Totally different game and much better experience on the Wii U.
You say you understand my needs but I don't think you do. The XBONE is a WORTHLESS system for me and gamers like me. The Wii U has plenty of racing games that are kid friendly and HIGHLY acclaimed. Mario Kart 8 is a 9 on IGN and racing games really don't get higher than that. Need for Speed Most Wanted, Sonic All Stars Racing, and Rodea are all good racing games that are just as good as if not better than Forza, especially for kids and families.
Traditional 2d or 3d fighting games? Super Smash is rated on IGN as a 9.8 masterpiece. Injustice: Gods Among Us, is also not a bad T-rated title. After playing the new splatoon, I hold is a better couch co-op fighting experience than anything on the XBONE for kids and parents alike. Honestly, I think you need to take a closer look at Wii U exclusives.
No, the Wii U is not getting battlefront. But Battlefront (again) is a fairly aggressive t-rated title and is largelyh online only play. I would much rather have Splatoon or the new Star Fox.
Don't take this the wrong way either. After all, I am not exactly a Nintendo fan until just recently. The last Nintendo console I owned was the original NES. (I was always a Sega and a Playstation fan.) But the point remains that there is little to any reason for me to own at XBOX ONE. Really a worthless system for me. For single gamers like yourself who enjoy FPS and M-rated titles, then I think it was made for you.
As far as the sales facts are concerned, you should know that the Wii U has picked up tremendous steam last quarter and actually outsold the XBOX ONE last month.
Please do not take offense as well. (Because none was taken on my end.) My point in writing this was to maybe help others know why they should grab a Wii U and NOT an XBOX to avoid falling in the same trap I did. To be clear, the XBOX is great if you like to solo play and online only games. It is great if you like T and M rated FPS. It is a TERRIBLE choice if you like couch co-op. It is a TERRIBLE choice if you have young gamers under the age of 12 in your home. It is a TERRIBLE choice if you like platforming — especially in multiplayer. It is TERRIBLE choice if you like adventure titles, but for either personal, religious or family reasons, don't play M-rated titles. It is a TERRIBLE choice if you like E, E10, and T-rated only gaming.
Personally, I predict that last month's sales trends will continue. PS4 will remain in a healthy lead, but the gap between the Wii U and the other consoles will continue to shorten. The PS4 and the XBONE just don't offer much of anything to gamers like me. As increasingly more quality exclusives are released for the Wii U (Xenoblade, Zelda, Star Fox, Fire Emblem) I anticipate this will continue to be the case. My only point in saying this is that family-gamers and couch co-op gamers beware, there is presently NOTHING on either the PS4 or the XBOX one for you.
@hYdeks Just so you know, this "last gen system" sports FAR more quality gaming options for your average consumer than both the PS4 and the XBONE combined.
Basically, the PS4 has no titles of any quality outside of epic Japanese RPG and M-rated FPS, M-rated horror titles, and M-rated adventure titles. I was seriously considering PS4 until I recognized, why? Seriously what is the point of a game like "Driveclub" if you can only play it solo or online. (Seriously, we have had split screen for racing games since the original NES! Who buys a racing game they can't play on the couch with a date or with your friends/family/spouse/gf?) No good platformers (as in a big fat ZERO unless you include Rayman which is also on the Wii U), no local co-op in any game outside of Diablo III (a PC game BTW), no decent E or T rated adventures or RPGs for my kids (excepting Child of Light which is also on Wii U). What is the point of having the most powerful specs of any gaming system on the market if your games and your exclusives more or less suck for the majority of consumers?
The PS4 is for hardcore fans of the horror genre, epic and sweeping Japanese RPG, and other M-rated adventures. The XBONE is for online FPS and the latest Madden. The Wii U is for pretty much EVERYONE ELSE!
Like platform games especially in local multiplayer? Then the Wii U is your ONLY option. Like T and E rated adventure games? Then the Wii U is your ONLY option. Like RPG that isn't rated M? Then look no further than the Wii U. Got gamers in your home under the age of 12? Not if you don't have a Wii U.
Seriously, every exclusive released so far this generation for the Xbox and the PS4 is utter trash or fits squarely into genres of games I have no interest in playing (or, genres I would never in a million years let my 11-year old boy play). Meanwhile, every single exclusive for the Wii U is nothing short of STELLAR. We are talking Splatoon, Smash Brothers, Zelda, Hyrule Warriors, Mario 3d, Mario Maker, Sonic, Mario Kart, Sonic Racers, Rodea, New Mario Bros, New Super Luigi, Donkey Kong Country, Xenoblade, Bayonetta, Star Fox, etc.
Trust me, you would be better off picking up a Wii U. If and when PS4 makes any decent games, I will consider buying that too.
Sold my Xbox recently. Buying this bundle for my kids (and, of course, myself) this Black Friday.
Can't want to play the more family-friendly co-op games. It is clear that Nintendo is the only company that cares about family friendly games or couch co-op anymore.

Re: Super Smash Bros. + Splatoon Wii U Hardware Bundle Emerges in GameStop Black Friday Advert
Re: Super Smash Bros. + Splatoon Wii U Hardware Bundle Emerges in GameStop Black Friday Advert
Sold my Xbox recently. Buying this bundle for my kids (and, of course, myself) this Black Friday.
Can't want to play the more family-friendly co-op games. It is clear that Nintendo is the only company that cares about family friendly games or couch co-op anymore.
