Does this mean that Animal Crossing will never be put on a GC VC? Or will they have to alter the game if they do so? That's an interesting question if you ask me.
This ad nearly gave me a heart attack! I thought the Wonderful 101 logo looked like an F-Zero title. Not the case, though. I'm still not used to The Wonderful 101's design. If these are the demos, I'm not uber excited for them, though it'd be better than nothing, so I'm still somewhat excited if it's real.
This kind of development cycle seems really intelligent. If this model is effective, more 3rd party developers should try it out. They'd get really good games out. With 8000 or so game testers, it should be pretty polished. I'd definitely pick this up to tide me over until the next F-Zero.
Because apparently Nintendo is totally not geared towards the youthful market? His argument is bubkiss because Nintendo is already occupying the market which he says they need to be in. Should Nintendo go multiplate? Not right now. Come back in 7-10 years, we'll see then.
I assume they're going to swap-out the 8GB of storage for the 32GB units. Better then re-manufacturing a butt-ton of consoles. Also, a word to the wise: if you're a hardware collector, pick one of these up ASAP - it'll become the rare version. Not sure how many basics were sold, but it's definitely a scarce amount.
If you ask me, I'd say backwards compatibility was a 7th gen perk. Sure, PS2 and Wii U are part of it, but not many people use them for their backwards-compatibility. The only console truly worth having for backwards-compatibility is the Wii, since a GameCube component cable runs for over the cost of a Wii on ebay.
I almost hope they do the same for the next Advance Wars so that it's not a rerun of Days of Ruin / Dark Conflict. That game was great with a better unit arrangement (admit it, Dual Strike's was an unbalanced cacophony). I loved the Duster and Anti-Tank units, but the style was not what made Advance Wars "Advance Wars". If Nintendo says "Hey! Sell minimum X units", you can bet they'll produce another gem. I highly doubt the next AW would do poorly (so long as there is a large enough 3DS install base in America and Europe).
@evanescent_hero XD Sorry to imply that it was, but regardless of it's quality (or rather lack thereof), it "technically" is a Metroid game. However, it still sits at 6 years since Prime 3, and thusly 3rd in line in that sense, though it would be nice to get something to compensate Other M sometime soon.
It might be wise to rephrase the last part to "Over 100 Best Buy locations throughout the U.S. +[and Canada]".
I can't wait until they bombard us with E3 news. Hopefully Metroid fans won't bemoan the (possible) lack of a new announcement. Seriously! It's only been 2 years! I'd rather see a new Starfox or F-Zero, they've been absent for 7 and 10 years respectively. *Starfox 64 3D doesn't count as new. Retro?! Whatchu hiding!?
This is actually a better marketing plan than having a huge E3 show. Good on Nintendo for coming up with this. I hope they continue this trend; I much rather it than the "only ever here in California" that excludes a huge majority of fans. Hopefully they'll get this running in Europe and elsewhere, too.
I didn't bother finishing this article. All I can say is that I can't fehking wait until E3 comes by and Nintendo shows off a bunch of games that use the hardware to its fullest and sales pick up. Then 90% of this BS will just stop (and move on to nit pick something else).
Remember when they showed off Wind Waker and the fanbase went nuts? Many were wondering why they would forego the "realism" of previous LoZ games. Now, Megaman is in the same place (albeit in reverse) and yet again those same people are in flames over it foregoing the cartoon style. Personally, I'd like to tell them to just accept change, because the next thing you know, this would have been one of the best - if not most interesting Megaman games. The story was sound and it was only half a year in development. Give it the 2-3 years it deserves and I'm certain it would have an amazing game.
@Shiryu lol I'm lucky/unlucky as I "discovered" F-Zero almost a year ago now. I had played GPL for 4 years, but it didn't get me like GX did. I'll keep doing my "F-Zero awareness campaign" until we get another from Nintendo.
Fun fact: Phantom Road is actually Rainbow Road. Graphics can be found of it in F-Zero AX's ROM. I haven't had time to put it on AX's TCRF page yet, though. http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/74/rainbowroadax.png
I can't see Nintendo not making an F-Zero game on WiiU/3DS, especially with all the buzz F-Zero has been getting as of late. Can't wait to see what these remixes sound like.
@MakeMyBiscuit Brand is just about everything. SanDisk is revered for it's quality. Got an 8GB one years ago and it still works fine, while a 16GB "random" brand lasted but about 15 writes and locked up permanently. Stick to a brand you know is good. I also find Lexus to be quite reliable.
I find it funny how we're talking about games taking up substancial space, when in contrast a 4GB SD card can hold every NES/Famicom and SNES/Super Famicom game. Times certainly have changed. Anyway, good on Nintendo for foregoing proprietary media for both 3DS and Wii U.
Itoi has said before that he'd also love love to see a Mother 4, but not be the one to make, simply to be the player. I think this statement goes with that - he doesn't wan't to be the creator of Mother 4. Though I think leaving the franchise would be a good thing. He could, should he want to, make another series, and should he wish, make it a spiritual successor to the Mother series. Remember, Mother was an experiment in story telling for Itoi and was hardly supposed to be what it is today. I think moving on and making something fresh and new would be better. After all, that's what made Mother so great.
I'd have to say they're working on a Starfox game. It'd suit with what Retro has done and it is in some ways closer to Metroid than F-Zero in that it is a type of shooter. Though F-Zero is a racer; an equally stereotypical 'murican genre. My hopes are for a new F-Zero! Retro + F-Zero would be a killer combination!
@FOURSIDE_BOY I get what you're saying, but Megaman is treated more as a series than a character, and he shouldn't be. Also, as much as those games "have almost nothing of megaman in them and could've been another franchise entirely", that just brings up the question "What defines Megaman games to make some Megaman games not valid?" Someone could say that Super Mario Sunshine could have been it's own thing, but does it mean it is any less valid a Mario game? If that's the assumption, then every new game of a series ever made should be counted as "could be it's own thing." But the thing is companies use IPs to associate one or a few core mechanics to a game, using it to convey the general experience, but that idea falls apart when everyone criticizes the game for every element it did not carry over from the last.
I completely agree that CAPCOM's "quality standard" isn't exactly a thing, and that Megaman won't ever be Mario flexible, but that's not to say Megaman can't be flexible at times. Also, while I hated X as a kid, that's not to say I haven't since warmed up to the older Megaman style. Likewise, if ever you go back to Battle Network, try focusing on the battle system - that's the real fun of the game. The best of the bunch is BN3.
For anyone who can't accept an FPS Megaman game, I get you, but let me make a point. I got introduced to Megaman with Megaman Battle Network 4. I love them - they're great strategy games. But the day my mother came back from the video store with a rented copy of the Megaman X collection, it didn't compute. My brother and I both hated it, we just didn't get it.
The issue with Megaman is that we (the fans) see "Megaman" as the line we like the most (AKA Classic, X, Zero, Legends, BN, SF, etc). But it's not. Megaman is an amalgamation of a variety of genres, much like Mario games. However, Mario spin-offs and variations don't get the flak Megaman games do, and it is due to us having the wrong perspective and being too attached to one the canons. Embrace them for what they are and not what you want them to be and you'll enjoy any Megaman game.
As for those who think FPSs tend to suck (myself included), here's a tidbit related to these videos: the combat may look stale, but only because there was one type of enemy, hence only one type of way to finish them off (the flashy finishing move). It might seem too flashy even, but if there were lots of small enemies, then one of the big ones seen, the flashiness would be both more rewarding and more interesting. Also, they didn't show much of the platforming aspects or customizable weapons. Given more development time, I'm certain the game would incorporate more of that distinct Megaman flavour.
@Trikeboy Actually, Nintendo broke the deal with Sony. Yamauchi re-read the contract they had signed for the partnership; it turns out a portion of that contract gave Sony control over what games could be released for the SNES-CD. Seeing that Sony could deny any Nintendo game to not be released on the add-on, they cut the deal off. Ken Kutaragi looked at what had been done, and seing it's current state, decide to make it a fully fledged console.
The article itself is amazingly insightful. I'd die ten-fold for access to all the crazy stuff Nintendo has never release, from hardware to games unreleased or simple prototypes. I love the mention of Mario 64-2 for DD. I'm curious to know what happened to it. It's also fun to think what might have happened if the DD was a part of the N64 from the start. I wish Nintendo would reveal it's secret vault to us. That would make for the best documentary(ies?) ever.
I don't get why everyone thinks the Wii U needs a price cut. The console needs a system seller; had SSB4 been at launch, the thing would be selling like hot cakes. That's not the case, but you can bet Nintendo will be reluctant as hell before they cut the price. It won't be for another 3 months anyway, and by then it'll be E3 - which could be the pick-me-up the console needs. I'd wait until July before counting my unborn chicks.
While I won't comment on the 3rd party issue as I have rarely ever liked 3rd party titles, I will say that there was something lost during the Wii phase that Nintendo needs to start showing again. And quite frankly, I'm sort of happy that the Wii U has poor sales - or rather Gamecube sales. Gamecube games were amazing. Remember that the one in last place makes the best games, not because they want to, but because they need to.
You have to shine brightest when you're in the darkest part of the woods.
Emulators are a godsend. While I don't condone what most people use them for, I find Dolphin to be quite indispensable - the difference is that I rip my own ROMs of games I own with my Wii. It's so handy for testing codes and other researching purposes. So while putting an emulator on the App Store is stupid, emulators themselves are quite a good thing. Heck, without emulators, Nintendo wouldn't have Virtual Console games. Focus on how ROMs are obtained and not emulators - redistribution is the problem.
@Geonjaha Don't ever base your opinion of F-Zero on the GBA games, nor should you think the SNES classic has aged very well. Your perspective is different now than it would of been then. Not to mention F-Zero is a show of a console's might - outdated hardware does no justice. Go pick up GX to know what F-Zero is about. This is coming from someone who's initial experience with F-Zero came from GP Legend. You won't regret it.
@Spark_Of_Spirit It "bombed"? Is that so? Software-to-Hardware tie ratios say otherwise: F-Zero X to N64 - 1:29, F-Zero GX to Gamecube 1:33. Probably not as profitable, but by no means a failure.
I don't think X or GX is better than each other. While I love my 'Cube dearly, when I get playing X or GX heavily, I sway in that direction. I think both plateau at amazing. I've been playing the original for 3 days, having bought a sealed copy for my now-functioning SNES I got a while ago. I'll see just how well it stacks up soon enough. While I can't say anything for FZ:MV, GP Legend is probably the weakest F-Zero entry. I bought it for 2.50$ at EB Games! That's basically "Here, we don't want it!". I could go on about it, but this isn't the place for that.
As long websites like this make a buzz about F-Zero, I'm sure Nintendo will pick up the message one day, if they haven't already. I doubt (but hope!) that Retro is working on F-Zero. (I'd say their making a Starfox entry.) I hope it's a Wii U game; they could do so much more for the franchise on the Wii U. Also, here's a little brim of hope: F-Zero's (Japanese) 25th is in 2015. #HYPE
Oh, and for the staff here: Stay up to date with the F-Zero AX code, as Ralf has been on it's case as of late. It's up to version 3 (and 3.1 for Pilot Points screen) as of today. Version 3 added the F-Zero AX logo on startup. It's crazy fun stuff!
@KenB Hey, you should update this article's codes! With the amount of attention these codes are getting I went back to see if Ralf updated the code, and he did about 3 weeks ago. It fixes issues with track/backdrop/audio issues on the selection screen. I also revamped that section of the TCRF article with both PAL and NTSC codes (both AR and Gecko/Ocarina), as well as some supplemental information. Thanks again for making an article on this! http://tcrf.net/F-Zero_GX#Leftover_F-Zero_AX_Code
@SteveW I know we had someone test out the code on AR 1.06 and it failed, though it appears that AR 1.14 works. I've personally tested out the Gecko/Ocarina code, and it works just fine.
Woah! People actually read up on F-Zero GX? I'm so amazed you guys actually made an article on this! Thank you so much Ken Barnes! According to Ralf, the creator of the code, there's still the E3 demo on the disc, too. I updated the page today with Gecko support, should anyone need it. Anyway, I'm truly ecstatic that you noticed the article! Make sure to give the AX article some love, too! I need to find someone with C skills.
Also, I hope fans can make enough noise to get Nintendo to make another F-Zero game! Here's hoping to an F-Zero for Wii U! C:

I also revamped that section of the TCRF article with both PAL and NTSC codes (both AR and Gecko/Ocarina), as well as some supplemental information. Thanks again for making an article on this!

Re: F-Zero AX Found Hidden In GameCube F-Zero GX
@SteveW I know we had someone test out the code on AR 1.06 and it failed, though it appears that AR 1.14 works. I've personally tested out the Gecko/Ocarina code, and it works just fine.
Re: F-Zero AX Found Hidden In GameCube F-Zero GX
