@Valdney dead cells would have been forgettable if it was a one and done game. I've sunk over a hundred 100s(which is just a low guess) and they keep adding new levels and items. Each boss cell generally adds new enemies to each area too. Sounds like you weren't able to progress far(which is fine BTW)
You claim you sold it because it was the same thing over and over but if it was just a 10 hour game would you keep it after you beat it? I doubt it and even if you did you probably wouldn't go back to it so either way it seems irrelevant you sold it
@Migoshuro Some of the most popular games are very repetitive, basically every massive multi-player game. Really any genre has very repetitive games, people just choose to ignore that fact when they're into it. I have a friend that will play certain rpgs or mmos and say they're repeative and grindy, then he'll play another which is very similar but for whatever reason it gels with him and he likes it. They put a different wrapper on it and he doesn't notice/care
Something people often do is conflate rogue-like and rogue-lites, curse of the dead gods has permenant progression in terms of perks and iirc some other minor stuff. Meaning you're getting stronger, plus I think they have different levels you can pick so you're working towards a set path not a full restart everytime.
Hades/rogue legacy /dead cells are all rogue lites and definitely don't "not want you to finish" as you claim. I don't even think most rogue likes are hoping you can't finish, I think they want you to learn from your mistakes and get better. They're not arcade games trying to get you to put in more quarters XD they already got your money.
@fiben1002 I would have said the same thing two days ago but I played slay the spire on pc and wow! This genre can be a lot of fun. I can't wait for StS on switch +phone and it makes more excited for Quest now
@Lemmy_the_Koopa I get an email when someone replies to me and I reply like I'm doing now. You're argument is circular because I can just tell you you're telling me not to get hung up but you're hung up on what I said. Me saying there's a lot of negativity doesn't impede you in any way either.
I haven't played this game, I clicked the comments to maybe gain insight from people that have played the PC version or know of it. Instead it's mostly just people who are mad something they don't like dares exist. It's just weird to me but I try and live by the golden rule, even on the internet.
@PortablexombieV2 Not everyone feels "that way" roguelites and rouglikes have an audience and some of them sell pretty well. This game has about 1000 reviews and it's 90% positive. Risk of rain has 16k reviews that are mostly positive.. dead cells 21k mostly positive reviews, a game on many best of lists(including mine)
Your logic is basically you don't like a genre or style so if you complain devs will not make those games anymore even though lots of people like them. I don't like point and click adventures, should I post that on every new game in that genre so they don't make them anymore?! Or should I just accept there's genres I don't like and play one of the thousand other games coming out this year??
Developers make the games they wanna make, they value sales, critical reception and fan feedback..you're not a fan so your tastes don't matter to them. Nor anyone else posting they don't like RL's.. 2d games.. indie games etc etc because you weren't buying it anyways.
@bolt05 My comment wasn't directed at everyone that made a negative comment. I didn't want to directly reply or call out anyone in particular. So I'll own up to that being a mistake. However there's a big difference between criticism for the sake of it and constructive criticism. The former is useless and just breeds negativity and the other can be a start to conversations. Your comment at least explained why you feel as you do, some of the others were just a line of hate and nothing else. That sort of stuff just makes comment sections all over the internet so awful.
The internet isn't free either, most sites have guidelines and moderators. I'm a big free speech guy but I also do my best to speak as I would in real life. If you were at a fan gaming event and someone was showing off their game would you walk up to them and just "haha roguelikes are so 2018" or "I'll pass I hate these types of games" if you say yes then you're an As.. you're a jerk. Just because you feel anonymous doesn't mean you should be extra rude. Just walk by, walk towards something you like or yeah maybe talk with the devs and give them some constructive criticisms.
We'll probably have to agree to disagree, it'd just be nice if people put a little more effort into what they say. Negative or positive.
In regards to your moonlighter comment, if there was 4 or 5 designed dungeons they'd probably have to change a lot more about the game. Going back to the exact same dungeon layout to farm mats to sell or to craft would be much more boring to me. Not to mention there's no puzzles really so you're just talking about bespoke combat areas.. which many games have and(some) people complain they're repetitive. Hyper light drifter is what comes to mind for me, and adding a shopkeeper element to that game wouldn't make it better imo. At that point scrap the shop aspect and just make a 2d zelda
@Heavyarms55 Not sure of the exact history but roguelites date back to the 70s so this definitely isn't a new trend, just more popular today. There's a number of roguelites that offer some form of progression as well, I believe that's the difference between like and lite but someone who knows better please correct me.
That's really what makes the roguelite genre hit or miss for me, I like the tension of losing progress but I don't like to lose it all. Rogue legacy, dead cells are just two examples of lites that carry stuff over. A recent one I like a lot is moonlighter and all you really lose is what's in your bag when you die the dungeon, I'm not sure if it's even a roguelite though.
So much negativity in these comments. If you're not into these types of games the switch has 29 other games dropping each week.. move along to one of those. The world doesn't revolve around you and your tastes. It's actually kind of unreal to have a mentality like that, should devs just cancel games/ports because you're not into certain genres? You all need to take a look in a mirror and ask yourself why you feel the need to go out of your way to complain about a game you're not into.
A good game is always good regardless if there's many similar games already out or if you don't like the genre.
I don't know much about this game, I'm trying to see if it aligns with what I like but it's got a lot of good reviews on steam. It'd be nice if comments were insightful instead of useless negativity
I had it on PC already in early access but got the switch version when it launched.. it's fine(performance, the actual game is great) and I haven't been tempted to go back to the PC version for a better frame rate
I'm usually pretty good at accepting reviews as just someone else's opinions and moving on but having played/beat this game on the Vita it's kind of crazy to see a 6. I'm definitely bias seeing how I love souls-likes and metroidvanias but I think it's at least a 7(it's an 8.5-9 for me personally) overall.
I'm actually debating to double dip or not.. normally it wouldn't be an issue but there's a lot of games coming to the switch these days.. and I feel like I should buy games I don't own on different platforms.
It's made by a husband and wife team so I think anyone that appreciates that kind of thing should support them.. it's probably going to be the reason I double dip!
@Agent721 and if you own a pro controller or you still have the set of joy cons that came with your Switch..you can easily go from handheld to dock still.
