@Maxz Niche, from what I learned as a child, has everything to do with the pronunciation of the singular vowel, 'i'. Examples: it, witch, which, rich, smith, wish, fish, dish, itch...etc. If you took the word rich and added an 'e' at the end...
Everything else you brought up, I'm in complete agreement. In addition, I'd like to know when "go it alone" became a saying. 'Go' insinuates a movement or direction (verb). 'It' would be the noun and 'alone' would represent plurality or quantity or quite possibly the subject. For the sake of slang, 'go at it alone' makes more sense... in my mind.
@BloodNinja I haven't played that game in ages. The first mod I created, was a chest in a room with the best loot. Skyrim was cool, but something about Morrowind kept me coming back.
*I beat Morrowind plenty of times, but I can't say the same for Skyrim.
@Maxz You're right. When I made that comment, I was thinking about the online community I played games with, when I was younger. When speaking of niche, we would pronounce it the American English way. What was going through my mind, was at what point, did kids (from the US) start pronunciating is as if they were from any of the countries you mentioned. I'll answer my own question...playing with other players across the globe.
I don't know where to start. In the late 90's, I had my own place, a decent job and money to spend. Being a child at heart, what did I do? Bought' an entertainment center, a 4 channel stereo receiver and a recliner to sit in.
Having at that point, only played Metroid on the Nintendo and Gameboy...Super Metroid was a must buy. While primitive by today's standards, that was a submersible experience.
@Tharsman I could be wrong...but I'm pretty sure the title of the game, was referring to the monsters, not the main character. Take for instance, space invaders.
Did you know...that OG and its first usage, stood for "original gangster", not original game?
Did you know, that pawned, which later became pwn'd, was actually a reference to a player, that was as expendable as a pawn in the game of chess? Did you know, it was pronounced, pawned; not powned? Just like niche. It's not neeche. It's nitch.
What I find hilarious...though I don't take it seriously now a days, is how the original pronunciation and definition of a word has changed over the years. It's like a game of whisper down the lane.
Back in the day, the name of the game, "Metroid" was perceived to be that gelatin creature that attacked you. Not the hero, but the threatening enemy within the game.
Concerning Metroid Dread, I don't care so much for the story, as I do the exploration, finding new abilities and upgrades. The real entertainment comes when using those abilities and upgrades to discover new areas that were previously unaccessible. I'm keeping my fingers crossed...I really hope the map is so expansive, that there's 50+ hours of game play and that doesn't including backtracking to find all of the secrets!
I've played every Metroid, with the exception of the installments on the GameCube/Wii. I DO agree with this list and having Prime in the top 5 tells me that I've been missing out.
Thing is, I've always appreciated games that expand on thier original design; Metroid II & Super Metroid and just about every handheld version (being 2D). Games that drastically change in design aren't really my thing. Back in the 90's, when every single franchise switched from 2D to 3D, without the players asking for it, I felt that they abandoned the older gamers, only to include a new audience that didn't have a history with those games. They should have just created new franchises and IP's. While I didn't agree with the everything moving from 2D to 3D, just because the tech was there; fast forward and here we are: developers going back to thier roots: what made the games great to begin with.
On that note, I hope I continue to see this as a trend and hopefully Nintendo includes the Legend of Zelda in the mix...and not some remake of a game that I've already played. For all of those old school gamers out there...can you imagine LoZ and Metroid, with gigantic immersive worlds with all of the graphical enhancements and upgraded controls, providing a 50 hour plus experience? I can.
@stinky_t "@RupeeClock Metroid 35. Everyone gets placed randomly on NES Zebes and has to hunt the other players to the death. Please Nintendo" That is a great idea!
On a side note, I'm really hoping that Metriod Dread's map is so expansive, that a speed run will take 30 hours.
@OliBeer I played Kirby back on the original Gameboy and trust me, it was 🔥 back then. Thing is, I've grown out of it. The three Nintendo IP's that I buy are Mario, Zelda and Metriod.
While that clip did nothing for me (I don't care about the story, just the exploration, combat and power up's), I'm still eagerly waiting for metriods release.
It's games like this, that are my sole reason to buy Nintendo consoles.
What's this "Original Gangster" (OG) version people speak of? Jk. I have the original model and while I play in both modes, I'm still on the fence. It would be nice to play on a larger screen w/ extended battery life, but I can't see myself spending the money when my original works just fine(though I probably will).

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (August 7th)
@JoeDiddley For me, SOTN is the standard that all metroidvania's should live up to. If you enjoy playing it, check out Bloodstained.

I bought three games last week. Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Dungeon Defenders: Awakening.
I'm playing Dungeon Defenders. I don't know what it is, but something about dungeon defense, mixed with an action rpg; keeps me engaged.
