While Bethesda's QuakeCon got off to a slightly rough start in its live stream, the big news from its opening is confirmed - Quake is out now on Nintendo Switch after a listing dropped earlier today. We've checked the UK and US eShop where it costs $9.99USD / £7.99. (We've posted the Xbox upload of the trailer as Nintendo's is age-gated)
It seems like a really solid iteration of the classic, too. It's out on all current consoles, and on Switch it comes in at 1080p when docked, with widescreen support and a wide variety of visual and technical enhancements. And yes, it has gyro motion controls.
In terms of content it has the original campaign and all original expansion packs; intriguingly there's a new expansion included called "Dimension of the Machine". That was developed by MachineGames, which is well known for the Wolfenstein games of recent years.
In terms of multiplayer there's co-op for two players splitscreen or up to 4 players online; in competitive there's online for 8 players or local splitscreen for 4 players. In a nice touch there are dedicated servers for online matchmaking, and if you do decide to setup custom matches with friends it'll use peer-to-peer. Also, campaign co-op and online play is all cross-platform with PlayStation, Xbox and PC.
Finally, there are mods. The game includes 'free, curated, fan-made and official mods and missions such as Quake 64', with more promised soon.
Phew, seems like a promising package to us! Are you planning to pick this up?

Ask and ye shall receive. 😉
Amazing news, absolutely amazing. I've already bought it.
Hopefully the sequels are on their way too Then Hexen can make a comeback.
By the way, Quake 64 is included as a free add on. The full game! And it looks like it's set up for more add ons to be added too, like what Doom and Doom 2 got. I've played a few minutes and it runs silky smooth, just like the Doom 64 port, which Nightdive also done. The motion controls are great too and there's HD Rumble.
Brilliant stuff!
I shall pick it up. But please review this. I want to know how good it is on Switch so I can spend my money carefully
And for 9,99$? I'm not usually one of those who complains about Nintendo's remasters being 60$ but uhm...wow. That seems very fair
Downloading it on Steam, ASAP.
I'd prefer a series reboot (like Wolfenstein and Doom), but it seems good
@Aozz101x same, this will go very nicely with Quake 2 RTX
I want it but I'll wait for a physical release!
I wonder if the Switch version supports local wireless play? It's nice to know gyro aiming is supported.
Noice, downloading now!
Going straight to the Steam Store for this. This remaster looks really solid and like about the same amount of love put into it as Quake II RTX
Sweet. Classic Doom, Duke Nukem and now Quake all on Switch. Getting this for sure.
@OorWullie I'm not sure if Heretic or Hexen will ever come to modern consoles.
I heard the two series got tangled up in some legal predicament between Zenimax/id Software and Activision/Raven Software.
However, it's possible I suppose since Heretic and Hexen are somehow both available on GOG.
This game used to terrify me on the N64. Good to see it return.
YES I WAS READY FOR SO LONG
I'm considering getting this, especially since I'm new to Quake. How well does it run on Switch?
Hell yeah! I have wanted to play Quake in consoles for years (I have the gog.com version on my PC already). This makes me very happy!
Yeah, I'll probably buy this as there seems to be a ton of content. And gyro is hard to beat, even if it's still more or less like a game from the 90's with it.
Grabbed it on game pass just.
I mean...yea ill take a look
I've been waiting for this game since Doom 64 was released on Switch. Finally I could play it everywhere.. and now it's out.. just as I've discovered xcloud on my mobile.. with a 8BitDo controller connected and a higher resolution it now feel a bit hard to go for the Switch version.
(Oh, who am I kidding.. I love this game, probably will end up getting it twice)
Nice. Purchasing online so it's on my switch when I get home.
It awesome that Bethesda and id Software are now one of the most consistent third-parties releasing their games on modern Nintendo consoles.
I missed out on series like Doom for many years and now that I gotten the chance to play them, it's become one of my favorite gaming franchises.
I often hear Quake generalized as "Doom in 3D", and that has me excited to try it out. Hopefully, Quake will be another game to join my list of favorites.
This is awesome. That said, I'd love a Quake 3 Arena remaster! And one of its rival, Unreal Tournament. I really miss those old arena shooters.
Nice, I still had my two N64 games but glad they remastered this one.
Waiting for the inevitable physical release.
@Elvie but soon, Bethesda won’t release anymore games on Nintendo platforms except old ones probably
This, this right here is a good value.
I am so damn excited!! I am more of a Quake person than a Doom person so to me this is perhaps now one of my most treasured days as a Switch owner. I’m going to download right now!
MVG from the spawn cast was the senior developer on this.

@GamingBread The port is by Nightdive Studios, who done the brilliant Doom 64 and Turok ports so it's guaranteed to run well. I just put it on there to check out what's included and the demo gameplay looks to be silky smooth. I'm not playing it till later though.
It's funny, I was just looking at Nightdive's website today and wondered if it was them doing the port. They've also remastered System Shock and Forsaken, among many others. Hopefully they're coming to Switch too.
I’m trying to buy it but keep getting error code 2813-2470 cannot use this card… this is so annoying Nintendo
@GamingBread not had any issues, and appears to be at least 60fps...
I've got all the Doom titles on Switch because they were on sale for pretty cheap. But I'll be honest, I never really cared all that much for Doom. Quake was the FPS I cut my teeth on. Both in terms of adjusting to the keyboard/mouse gameplay on a PC, and in learning how to install mods as well as figuring out what the heck "/noclip" meant and how to activate it.
@AmplifyMJ I had the same issue.I wasn't sure what it was saying though as I bought it from the Russian Eshop. I tried another card and then it worked.
I'll grab the physical edition LRG just announced. Can't wait to play with gyro controls!!!!!!
Wow, good news!
QUAKE NINJA APPROVED
@OorWullie my nephew had an absolute nightmare trying to purchase from the eShop recently, kept rejecting his mum’s cards. Ended up forced to buy an eShop card. I’ve used this card many times, including from the eShop, there isn’t a thing wrong with it. Extremely annoying.
@AmplifyMJ The card that got rejected for me I've used many times too, just the other day I used it. But then it accepted a another one I'd never used before.Strange.
No… way…
I had to check it wasn’t April 1st
@OorWullie I’ve just tried another card and it’s rejected it too. I guess I’ll use PayPal. Thanks for your help 😊
can anyone play online matches? i always get to the menu after checking the multiplayer restrictions
Grabbing this on Gamepass but will happily buy it for Switch also....
So happy about this!!!
@DTfeartheBEARD 4 player local split screen according to the notes on the store.
@Dethmunk Why would id use Unreal - it's the competitor to idTech, formerly known as "the Quake engine"?
Even Valve's Source engine is based on the open-sourced engine code from this game...
Falls off chair, phone flies out of hand, bangs head....
Well, that was a quick purchase!
As someone who "discovered" Doom thanks to the Switch releases (and then proceeded to play and love all the classic Dooms, specifically 1, 2, and 64, 'cause I'm having a lot of trouble getting into or even finishing Doom 3), this is great news for me.
@Kidfunkadelic83 I know it supports split screen. I was talking about local wireless play, meaning one player per Switch system each with a copy of the game, able to play together locally.
@DTfeartheBEARD sorry my man, my bad. I mis understood 🙏
Damn it, thought this was the game I used to play online on Dreamcast but realised that was Quake 3!
Just watched trailer, putting down phone, picking up switch. Must buy this!
Have wanted this for so long. Quake hasnt received nearly as much justive as it deserves over the years. Still waiting on that Rise of the Triad port Apogee announced last year also.
A game with zero representation for all you bigots out there. 😉
Picked up the game, saw a couple minutes later that LRG announced a physical release... well, guess I'll be getting both versions. I love Doom, haven't really gotten into Quake yet so I'm excited! I've really enjoyed the game so far.
@DTfeartheBEARD : Sadly, Bethesda never included wireless local multiplayer for the classic DOOM games. I would have happily bought four physical copies of LRG's release had they done so.
I spent many an hour having not-so-discreet LAN parties in the mid 2000s during computer classes, and my now late computing teacher would pull the death switch on the computers when we got busted (and pull our ears for our naughtiness ). Good times. May he rest in peace.
@Magician @GrailUK : Aagh. The fact that LRG are releasing a physical edition of only the first game is such a sucky move. I would have expected them to issue a compilation release similar to their DOOM release once Quakes I through to IV were available digitally, as I imagine that they would all fit snugly on a 16GB cart.
You know with all of these great games from decades ago, they should have called it the Nintendo Echo.
@Silly_G Oh, are they definately happening?
Just have to ask is this game like doom than..It looks awesome
@GrailUK : I can't say so with any certainty, but I would guess that it's next on the agenda. It doesn't really make much sense releasing only the first game when fans will invariably clamour for the rest of the series.
This is fantastic. Will download on Friday for sure.
@Silly_G I just thought it was a nice thing for Quakecon.
@NWC Yeah, it's fair to say it's like DOOM (id were responsible for both games.)
Bought it immediately
Looks better than I expected, definitely one I might buy in the future.
Seems like a steal after seeing Space Invaders for 60 dollars
They screwed up the analog controls. The turn accelleration isn't adjustable and it's way too high. Each turn starts out slow and then instantly ramps way way up. No deadzone options either.
@Silly_G Wow 4 physical copies? That's dedication right there! I ordered a copy of Doom Classics Collection for PS4 and Switch. Sounds like you had fun during computer class😁. Sorry to hear about your teacher😔. I would like gyro aiming to be added to Doom 3 for Switch at the very least.
Wasn't planing to get this, but split-screen is making me rethink that decision.
@Wavey84 It does indeed have HD Rumble and it feels great. It's much the same as Doom 64. The gyro controls are good too.
Sounds good! I never played Quake. With that said and even though the price is great, I will await the inevitable 50% sale.
Is there local wireless play?
Beats the never-ending flow of 2D pixel art platformers I guess.
@Wavey84 That could be the worst game I've ever seen. Is the frying pan your only weapon or do you get pots too? Just the sound of the pan hitting the Walking Arses from Outer Space was enough for me to declare it the worst game ever.
And everyone will play it for ten minutes and turn it off .
@Dirty0814 Why is that?
Man, they really add a ton of great features and accessibility, like with the many different ways to play with others online and the bonus add-ons and potential future support. I was thinking about how great this type of treatment would be for Goldeneye, from N64.
@sketchturner because that is literally what 80% of people do when these remakes come out. Their all excited then buy it and play the for like ten minutes and realize how inferior they are to today’s games.
Me I collect games so playing old school stuff all the time is like nothing to me, I love it but a majority of people will lose interest real fast.
Also I’ll wait for the physical copy to be released. If they did doom I am positive they will have one for quake also.
Free next gen update? Unless Nintendo decide to jump to the next generation that is going to be a long wait.
@OorWullie Hexen would be so amazing. Fingers crossed.
I am curious what happened to that Hexen wannabe that was being developed for the Switch though? Was very interested in that game.
@Dirty0814 Didn't know you knew what 80% of gamers do with their games they buy. Clearly they are inferior to you super mighty retro game man. 🙄 I'm gonna go play Quake now,... for 15 mins.
I bought it for the Switch. If you're an old school gamer like myself, BUY IT NOW! I've been playing online multiplayer. 8 player deathmatch! It has matchmaking if you just want to jump in and play, OR...you can host your own game or browse other players' servers(hosted on thier console). You can also specify whether you want to enable/disable crossplay and/or controllers only! If you create your own online game, you can choose the map, player limit, add bots and set the time/frag limit. If you want to practice, you can set the minimum player limit to 8, enable bots (and set thier difficulty) and start the game while you wait for players to join! This is how online multiplayer console gaming should be!
What is the frame rate?! I'm so interested in this if it runs well!! So cool that it's getting a physical release too!
@60frames-please If I had to guess, 60. It runs butter smooth.
@PROPS Awesome, can't wait to try this on my Switch.
@dcstud Would be awesome to get Hexen on Switch!
@GamingBread oorwolie says it runs like Doom 64 on Switch, which is a locked, beautiful 60fps. I can't wait to play this on my Switch!
Also, unlike most FPS on the switch, the gigantic deadzone on your joy con is nearly non-existent.
@60frames-please You can also, right from the main menu, go to add-ons and download Doom 64 maps. I haven't tried them yet, but I'd guess, you can play them online coop.

@PROPS Yeah, thanks. I just got it and played a bit. This is an awesome release! The Quake 64 maps look blurrier than the regular Quake game, which I guess I'm kind of disappointed about since Doom 64 looks so incredibly sharp on Switch (and other systems). The game targets 60fps, but definitely can drop. It's very nice though. I'm loving all the options, the gyro aiming, the classic gameplay.
@Dirty0814 wow
@Dirty0814 I played it for 13 minutes. I'll definitely start it up again, but I've got to try the new Warioware game, Rush Rally Origins, Inertial Drift (just got it on my Playstation and it is awesome), etc.
Quake is awesome on Switch.
@GamingBread It targets 60fps. It seems to stay there locked a lot of the time. I've just played 13 minutes, but I did see some frames dropped. It is awesome though. I love Quake on Switch! Also, Quake 64 looks blurrier than Doom 64 on Switch. I don't like it, but it seems locked at 60fps and I could totally play all of Quake 64 this way on my Switch. Such a landmark release.
@60frames-please I've been playing 2 hours. Just jump in and go. Just a raw, fast paced 1st person shooter. I'll be playing this until Metroid Dread comes out.
@GrailUK I think i played the 4th game but it's been years but for 9 bucks i can't beat that ..Thanks for the info
OMG! Quake on switch! I just hope they also give us Quake 3 which is by far the best multiplayer offering.
Oh *****, a 4 player splitscreen competitive FPS on the Switch?! Might have to get this and reignite some old Goldeneye/Halo nostalgia.
@PROPS Yeah, it's another awesome Switch release!
@Dirty0814 Looking at most trophy and achievement lists, that's exactly what most people do with modern games too. Superior as they are.
@60frames-please Could that be because the Quake 64 here is a fan made conversion rather than the actual Quake 64?
@vio Could be. It's still great to have. I'm just curious what's going on with it. Quake is an incredible package so I hate to complain. I was just expecting the same look that Doom 64 has. I freaking love Doom 64 on Switch. I bought it on PS4 and the colors are more dull. It's awesome looking on Switch. Sharp, bright, 60fps, jist so nice
I always loved Quake! But I am sure Microsoft is only releasing it to all platforms because there will be soon an announcement that Quake will be remastered and it will be game pass only. This is the carrot 🥕 for the donkeys(us)
Expansions, Mods and Gyro? That sounds almost too good to be true!
Now please give us mods for Skyrim and I will be happy, Bethesda!
@Dirty0814 Lmao, ok buddy. Whatever makes you feel better about yourself. 😂
@ConanLives That's a great idea!
Any idea if the Switch version has mouse and keyboard support?
@SepticLemon Technically, it does not. If you want to play an honest game (playing with a mouse and keyboard), I suggest playing on the PC.
There is hardware/software out there, that will let you use a mouse and keyboard, the problem is, it's emulating controller input.
Quake is king. I hope we will also get Quake 2 later on
If you want to play online, here's my friend code:
SW-8172-7933-7996
Great!! Now I can finally actually play Quake..let's see Quake 2 and Blood come to consoles now. Also System Shock 1 & 2.
@60frames-please Ok, I now know what's going on with it. Apparently it has a CRT filter draped over it and sadly, there's no way to disable it. I can't stand it either, but hey, at least Quake 64 is there. Maybe they'll provide an option to disable it in a future update?
@vio That kind of thing is so frustrating because CRTs look incredible, not blurry and crappy!
Correction:
“there's co-op for two players splitscreen or up to 4 players online“
This part is not quite right. The game DOES support 4-player splitscreen co-op. It is NOT limited to 2-player splitscreen in co-op. I just tested it and there’s video online of people doing it.
So you can play with up to 4 players online, OR up to 4 players locally via splitscreen as well. (But you cannot do both splitscreeen multiplayer and online multiplayer at the same time—only one or the other at a time.)
