But perhaps the question actually should be read "will I still enjoy it, even so this is so much older"? Guess this depends on how much you weight story to gameplay to method of storytelling....
....exept character design and graphics, if you ask me. PS2 looks OK when you keep in mind that this was '88 and visual spendor is not that important in retro RPGs anyway. But it's characters just can't get anyway near a team composed of:
a dog-man
a cute girl with wings
that plant-man thingy
Jean, the frogman, who can turn... into a frog
a ferral cat-girl (also cute =OuO=)
this giant armadillo guy who looks more like a hairless gorilla with a horse's head screwed on
and, as a bonus character: Blue, the serpent-tailed sorceress with a healthy streak to ego-mania. The only character looking normal (though with blue hair) is The Hero, but he's got those freaky dragon powers...
I can't tell about story because I haven't beaten them both, but basically they're both of the "go there, beat monster, get a patch of story in a text box" style, which is standard for this period of time and was done much better in FinalFantasys anyway.
That is to say: Once you made a deal with square-enix about BOF1, beat the FFs (and ChronoTrigger!) (and SeikenDensetsu, aka Secret of Mana!!!) out of them as well.
Ooh look, they're twins!! Very unequal twins maybe but they're from the same mother(SEGA) and the same date. Now, if we got back SEGA-Week, will there be other good things returning, too? Like, say, three games a week, releases for NeoGeo and such?!
Oh, BTW: Great deal to have the PS series- now it's just logical that parts 3&4 will follow one day, may this day be close :-] ! On the other hand, now that SMS has been announced for VC, wouldn't it have been more logical to bring out part 1 fist ?°_°? ?
I feel somewhat reminded to this radio commercial for 'Degenatron' in GTA-ViceCity: "Steer your red square in the blue square to shoot evil green-square dots, bring real live arcade realism to your home"! Anyone remeber that 8-) ?
"I personally don't want a hard drive humming in the background sucking up juice. Some of the things I like about the Wii is how it's compact, quiet, and use very little electricity (...)"
I personally would be happy if modern consoles still had descent on/off switches like they used to. I can't switch my Wii off via wiimote since I went online, it only ever goes into that orange-light "still on-line mode" until I keep the power botton pressed for about 5 secs, and then I must pull the plug to have the red light finally go out o_O. I can hardly call that economical.
Furthermore, the internal ventilation fan of my Wii produces just about as much noise as my PC- if not even more.
So, if they make an external HD I won't care- but I wish Nintendo took a rescent climate debate into consideration and made it possible to switch it off when not needed. I'm no eco-fanatic, but I care about ongoing cost as much as about the buying prize, which will be hefty enough anyway >:/
This might not belong here, but where the lovemaking do I find older articles on this site?!? I can't find the results of that caption-contest from the other week, and where can I access the japanese release-list once it's gone from the mainpage ?°_°? ???
Seriously I doubt that Big-N will allow users to play theyr VC-games from any medium that does not carry theyr brand. I mean, after all I'm still paying about €20 for a GC-Memory, and that's for the small version, so why would they let users have space to save now for free?!
On the other hand, I hope whatever Nintendo comes up with will not be to costy- after all what good could it be if a Wii+external memory all of a sudden costed the same as a basic 360 with a 20Giga harddrive built in!
Plus, when they come up with theyr external drive I hope they use it to make it easier to use everything else that concerns memory- like storing .mp3 on it or allowing GC-savegames to be read from it!
I don't read japanese either, but when compareing to other FFs like FF3(the DS-version) I think those jobs are white- mage, black- mage and thief (in the green garb). Not sure about the first job in the vid. though...
I've been thinking about if I should comment on this at all. Well, let's leave it at this: I know there are quite a few people who've been expecting this game, and I hope they are happy with it.
Best about this is that VC is going to get another RPG. That's one of my favorite genres, and it's come far to short on VC so far! SInce good RPGs are not so dependent on good graphics and sound they tend to age better than other titles. I' ve got PSII twice (on PS2 MD-Collection and on GBA), so I probably won't dowload it. But I strongly encourage to bring it on, anyway
This B/W sequence in the begining throws most people of, I can tell! Heck, I played this when it first came out, but I still get puzzled by this ('is the video-cable plugged in correctly?!'). Guess it's to show that the intro is set in the past, kind of a flashback.
Yep, the Dragon God "storing your journey in his memory" means the game's been saved. Same goes for the priests of St. Eva, as you will see later in the game.
But we are talking VC here, not XBLA. MS just does not have those decades of gaming history that Nintendo has. And Bill Gates' pet console has all the money behind it could need. Plus, whenever there is a 'classic' showing up n XBL, it's actually from some other system, be it from consoles or arcade machines, right? Heck, they're taking Goldeneye, whose classic do you think this is?!
I'm just saying that Nintendo has a heritage, maybe the biggest of all videogame companies today. How Big-N lives up to it's history is up to them...
Says here(quote): "Steel Penny Games is certified for Xbox Live Arcade and WiiWare development. We are currently seeking a publishing partner for Bruiser & Scratch or one of our many other innovative designs."
Doesn't sound too sure for me, actually. Still, i just love furries, so this alone is a good reason to keep my eyes on this. Actually though, I think this Scratch lady should go a little easyer on the eye-liner
"Well i'm guessing the slow release is because nintendo only got a few games left to release ."
Are you kidding?! Adding together all the games of SNES, NES, MD/Gen, TG16/PCe, N64, NG and- as I hear- soon to come SMS there are Virtually t-h-u-o-s-a-n-d-s of Games that could still be released! And if only 1% of those was worth playing they would still have years to fill with them, even at a rate of 3+ games a week. So, to make this point as clear as possible: if people complain, they mostly complain about missed opportunity, and they have every right to do so!
Lets do a little calculating here: One year has 52 weeks. Let us be especially optimistic and say NoE releases a game extra on X-mas like they did on last year and DOES NOT skip a friday in return, so thats a likely max. of 53 release dates a year. Now take the average live-span of a modern console, wich would be set at about 5-6 years (beeing optimistic about that too- I'm not so sure if Wii will last so long with the current policy of Nintendo...). So that would be:
53x6=318 dates to release games on...
Now, if todays routine continues with 1-2 games a week that will be:
318x1,5=469 games to come.
Tough it may be true that Nintendo at some time will be running out of OWN titles to release, they'd have to be plain stupid to be unable to strike deals with other companies. Acclaim, Konami, Rare... those were the Lables that fueld Nintendo's machines in the '80s and '90s. And I know several guys who would purchase a Wii if they could download all those classic Square games, speaking of FinalFantasy, Cronotrigger and the lot...
This is not taking into account the on-coming wii-ware titles, that most likely will play a more and more importan role in the later time of the wii, yet.
Personally, MY biggest hope has always been that the PAL-market get's to see all those games that never made it out of japan or the US on VC, but as it is, this dream is quickly turning into nightmare. Best to ignore VC and hope the releases of hard wii-games compensate for this mess?
And, BTW, yes, I love todays release of SSF2, too. Hope that Sega will be throwing in theyr MD-Version some time soon
It's out now in EU. I think, if I'm getting any of those versions at all it will be this one- exept SEGA decides to bring on theyr Gen/MD ports, this would rock!
The downside of this is, even thogh of course t'is a great game, it' the only one we got this week AGAIN... ((
I totally agree with robert. Metroid is an action-adventure, focused on constantly enhancing your abilitys to overcome oncoming hardships (best example are doors that can only be opened with specific weapons). Turrican, on the other hand, is and was always( and, hopefully, will be again some day pray) more of a run'n'gun game mixed up with vehicular skill passages. Yes, additional weapons... but when push comes to shove, in Turrican extra-weapons are more of an aide to prod baddies buttock instead of being the essential part of the game.
This, as it is, does not change the value of any of those games to me. I've never had the chance to seriously play one of the Turricane games but i just know how state-of-the-art the action was back in the days and I sure shall look forward to the possibility to do so now!
Metroid on the other hand... I came to play the original Metriod way after I played S-Metroid (I unlocked it via GBA-connection in my first Metroid Prime). And, sorry I have to say this, the original sucks, by modern standards. I couldn't get into it. Backgrounds are non existend, The screens are all the same, only changing slightly in arangement of platforms exept when you enter a new area that is mostly distinuished by a new colour. And the gameplay is way to ancient for me, without the posibility to shoot up, let alone crouch to hit enemies that zip along the ground to attack your ankles... I fully respect all the senior players out there who played it back in the '80s, but beeing a child of the '90s, this might just be a bit too retro for me!
To sum this up, comparing Metroid and Turrican is like comparing apples to pears- both are sweet and both are liked by some people more than the other. You just as well could compare the Zelda series to Diablo, or GranTurismo to Burnout- you will always find some similarities, but stilll they are all together to differend to be exchangeable!
Uhm, do you really think it's a good idea to have a video that is practically a walk-through with the review? Could be, like, a little bit of a spoiler?
Back in those days I had a habit. Club Nintendo's magazine was still available for free from my games dealer and they used to have those double-sided posters, but I refused to put any of them on my wall unless I had tried the games for myself. So I rented 1080 and I was impressed with the graphics, but somehow I couldn't get the hang on snowboarding... yet I remember very well how cool that poster was looking next to my door frame ;P
Can anybody out there tell me how good 1080 plays via classic controller? I'm willing to try it again, but I doubt it's worth it if the controls are worse than back then...
After playing HM for a whole week (and I mean WHOLE week ) I changed my oppinion on that game- maybe you really don't need more than 1 or 2 games a week if they keep you entertained like this ^^_
Still, I can't see why europe has always, ALWAYS I say, been the stepchild in videogame releases. There where so many really grate games that never made it to europe. Let's take FinalFantasy for example: Before FF7 this francise was close to unknown in EU, and parts 2, 3, and 5 never even made it to the US as well (FF4 was released as FF2 and FF6 as FF3 there)! And many games that came via the long route JAP>US>EU got cut and edited till they where hardly recognizable anymore- mind exibit B here: Contra got renamed Probotector and the musclepacked killing mashines where replaced by soulles Robots, in order to reduce violence for the european market.
The VC could be such a Great Opportunity for Nintendo to bring us all those games that have never been seen in europe before! I'd be happy if we at least got all those games that made it to the US during the last 20 years or so... So, in my humblest oppinion, europe whould desere at least as many as, IF NOT EVEN MORE games than the other regions, thank you so much.
BTW, within europe, germany take a special position because some games that barely made it to europe still contained to much violence to be finaly released here. Examples of these are especially some N64 games by Rare, most noteworthy 'GoldenEye', 'Conker's Bad Fur Day' and 'PerfectDark'. GoldenEye even is on a special german 'must not' list called "Index", which means it must not bee sold to persons under age 18, advertised or even mentioned in any way- if mentioned in a magazine these days it is described as "ein bekanntes Ballerspiel von Rare" ('a well-known shooter by Rare') instead of calling it by its name.
Sorry to say this, but the facts mentioned above would very well mean, that a deserved bond-shooter will never make it to EU-VC. As I mentioned, it is strictly tabooed in germany (even so I still got an imported copy on my shelve- I'm just forbidden to show it to any minors ), meaning that it wouldn't be legal to sell it online here. And since it would be hardly possible to exclude germany while the rest of EU can dowload it, I guess it won't come to europe at all, to avoid legal trouble.
@Frank: And even if they find a way to release Golden eye on VC legally, they probably won't. Rare is a part of Microsoft now if you didn't know that! And he who pays the whistler rules the tune- why would Bill Gates be interested to share a guaranteed top-seller with Nintendo?!
Startropics- that name rings a bell. Well, not bad, I guess. I'm still not impressed, but It seems aslmost as If Nintendo is trying to raise the quality of theyr games again. Mind you, being better than what we got in the last weeks, especially around cristmas, is not too hard...
I've been disapionted in VC releases for about a month now. We had a 'chritmas present' on Dec. 25th. and it ws a good one, fine. But why was there no release at all on last friday??! That's like givin you a gift but keeping in the allowance instead, baaad move! And the week before? "Skate or Die"... oh, please (drooling sarcasm)!
Tell you something: I'll give Big N' this last month to inpress me-then stop keeping my Wii-Points for 'something special' and probably won't get any more.
How about a game people really want for a change? Like Zelda: Majora's Mask!?
This is the game that crossed the line. There were two games released by nintendo today, Super Mario Galaxy and THIS- and, my Lord, I know wich one I would choose.
Do all of europe a favor and don't EVER buy this game. Send a message to Nintendo so when the next Zelda comes out we won't get screwed like this on VC again...
Im not caring if SMG was released today. Yes, i got it myself, but I reserved it at my local dealer in advance. And guess what- had it not been held back for me, the game (of course!) would have been sold out hours before I could have reached the store.
Note to Nintendo #1: You can't sell a great game to every one who wants it on the first day- you never can! Those who couldn't get Mario from the first shipment will be facing a pretty frustrated weekend.
Note to Nintendo #2: You wouldn't belive it, bur there are actually people who DON'T CARE FOR MARIO. I've been trying to convince a friend to get a Wii for months now but he has a very special tase in games. If VC had some more blockbuster RPGs, he would be in- add Zelda-Majora's Mask or any Square Title like FinalFantasy and you've got one Wii sold- consider that
Can't remeber 'Lagoon'. I know a game named 'Bahamut Lagoon', a RPG by Square-Enix (only Squaresoft back then) for SNES and Neutopia is defnt'ly not like that- if that's any help for you =OuO=
I don't think we'll get away with 1100WP for S&P, either. Guess it will be more like 1200- at least >. As I said about last week's releases: WRONG WAY, NINTENDO! I have 2000 points in store and I had hoped Ninja Gaiden to be at 500, so I could get this and some other NES title and safe the last 1000 for S&P. In this sense: "Thanks a lot, Nintendo!!!" *oozing_sarcasm* o_O
If only this developement wasn't going in one direction only. I wouldn't mind that much to pay more for "top-notch"-games if the weaker ones would cost less- as an example, I could imaginge weaklings like "Tennis" or "Baseball" to cost 300 points or less...
Does the player really move forward automatically like in Starwing/-fox!? Looks like going on rails... without rails! It's just because I like my Run'n'Gun games a bit more on the adventure-ish side, what other point in leaving your trusty starfighter or state-of-the-art battletank than for freedom of movement
As the original cartridge is still nicely tugged away on my shelf, both for SNES and for GBA, I don't see any need to download. But I can recommend it to everyone who is looking for a real, japan-style-random- encounter-hours-of-leveling- before-the-boss-RPG. I, guess the GBA-port in fact gave you more experience and gold- but does that make it a better game!? it just means you need half the time to level up, a good thing for those who play on the subway and then go for the PC once at home. But it only makes the game shorter, not easier... I sure hope Nintendo and Square-Enix come to a deal. Because now that we got BoF, voices will soon be heard demanding FinalFantasy- mine for example ^o^. And saying FinalFantasy means saying DragonQuest as well.... but PLEASE only featuring real translations, my japanese ain't so great, domo arrigato....
So Neutopia is closer to Zelda LttP than to the original Zelda (NES)? Sounds good, because even so le latter is history in itself, I don't need another game of the same quality. But another game on par with LttP would be cool . Just one thing: instead of scrolling, the game seems to flip screens one-by-one like the first Zelda did- doesn't this limit the game somewhat? I'm thinking about space to dodge boss-enemies, for example...
This is an action-adventure, not an RPG. RPGs involve leveling by experience points of some sort while in an actionadventure you gain strenght by collecting the right items, even if it's something like a heartcontainer in Zelda. Although some might dissagree and say things like "you are playing a character-role" I'm just trying to make clear the technical difference so nobody can come back and say they had been missinformed ("How do I level up in this frikkin RPG (;_;)", or the likes... ).
I don't really know about the rest of europe, but I for my self are even paying more for my Wii-Pionts already because shops in my area refuse to sell the Point-Cards for less than aprox. €23, instead of €20 as was originally intended! I could cope with R-Type fpr TG-16 beeing 800P 'cause it's easely one of the best games on that sytem, but two titles at +100P? Just because they've never been out of japan? NINTEND, WHE'RE TALKING ONLINE HERE, NOT IMPORT MARKET! AT LEAST MAKE FULL TRANSLATIONS FOR THE EXTRA MONEY, GODDAMIT!!! So, now thats been said *grmbfx*!!
Even so I'm repeating what many others wrote before me, I never heard about any MM-collection in europe. Played the first SNES MegaMan though, it was fun, but back than Jump'n'Shoots just weren't my kind of game. But I think this little gem is perhaps the best way to start over with this genre. Hope I'm up to the callange, guess today's "easy" games made me all soft ^o^. Perhaps the worst part about the game really is the cover- reminds me of the old "Running Man" movie from about the same time, but ol' Arnold "Gouvernator" S. was looking MUCH better in his body-suit. Seriously Capcom- did you put an actor into that costume as a model? Can't stop looking, it's like a serious traffic accident... *shudder*
This is rated as an ACTIONADVENTURE?! Does this mean I get to explore, collect items and abilities and than solve puzzles with them? It certainly does NOT look like it, especially with this Run'n'Gun-type of movie in the review
Yup, it was, I remember having played it ages ago. It was thrilling and the effects where real eye-candy, but it was un-be-leave-ably hard!!
I think about getting I for VC but I'm telling all the kids out there: this game is nothing for people with a low self conciousness- you have to belive in yourself to see the end of this 8)
It's easy to say "go level up", but can anyone say how to da that is this game?! Leveling works by getting the gems from the bosses and bosses don't reappear- so how should I gain levels without proceeding to the next (and ofcours more difficult) boss?
Anyone who thinks about getting this game should, in my oppinion, find an answer to that question before downloading it! X-P
Still, I would rather have had Landstalker- this game alone would have been a reason to get a MegaDrive, it's got to be on VC soon! And do we really need Ghouls'n'Ghosts for MD, figuring the SNES version had been released already? Anyone can tell me?
I think I saw the original arcade game on my dad's C64. But i was like 6 years old or so back than. It would be good to get that original in here, maybe some day more systems are added to the VC, but for now I'll pass on this NES version.

Re: Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers
It's out now in EU. I think, if I'm getting any of those versions at all it will be this one- exept SEGA decides to bring on theyr Gen/MD ports, this would rock!
The downside of this is, even thogh of course t'is a great game, it' the only one we got this week AGAIN... ((
Re: Super Turrican 2
Re: 1080 Snowboarding
Anybody here who actually downloaded it? How does it feel with the classic controler, is it recommendable?
Re: Revamped Site is Now Live!
Yay, real avatars! No more waiting till postings are approved And real emote smileys, too
Re: Adventures of Lolo 2
Uhm, do you really think it's a good idea to have a video that is practically a walk-through with the review? Could be, like, a little bit of a spoiler?
Re: EU VC Releases - 18th January - 1080 Snowboarding
Back in those days I had a habit. Club Nintendo's magazine was still available for free from my games dealer and they used to have those double-sided posters, but I refused to put any of them on my wall unless I had tried the games for myself. So I rented 1080 and I was impressed with the graphics, but somehow I couldn't get the hang on snowboarding... yet I remember very well how cool that poster was looking next to my door frame ;P
Can anybody out there tell me how good 1080 plays via classic controller? I'm willing to try it again, but I doubt it's worth it if the controls are worse than back then...
Re: EU VC Releases - 11th January - StarTropics
Re: EU VC Releases - 11th January - StarTropics
Startropics- that name rings a bell. Well, not bad, I guess. I'm still not impressed, but It seems aslmost as If Nintendo is trying to raise the quality of theyr games again. Mind you, being better than what we got in the last weeks, especially around cristmas, is not too hard...
Re: EU VC Release - 4th January - Harvest Moon
I've been disapionted in VC releases for about a month now. We had a 'chritmas present' on Dec. 25th. and it ws a good one, fine. But why was there no release at all on last friday??! That's like givin you a gift but keeping in the allowance instead, baaad move! And the week before? "Skate or Die"... oh, please (drooling sarcasm)!
Tell you something: I'll give Big N' this last month to inpress me-then stop keeping my Wii-Points for 'something special' and probably won't get any more.
How about a game people really want for a change? Like Zelda: Majora's Mask!?
Re: Double Dribble
This is the game that crossed the line. There were two games released by nintendo today, Super Mario Galaxy and THIS- and, my Lord, I know wich one I would choose.
Do all of europe a favor and don't EVER buy this game. Send a message to Nintendo so when the next Zelda comes out we won't get screwed like this on VC again...
Re: EU VC Releases - 16th November - Double Dribble
This sucks all the way home, Big-N >
If VC had some more blockbuster RPGs, he would be in- add Zelda-Majora's Mask or any Square Title like FinalFantasy and you've got one Wii sold- consider that
Re: Neutopia II
Can't remeber 'Lagoon'. I know a game named 'Bahamut Lagoon', a RPG by Square-Enix (only Squaresoft back then) for SNES and Neutopia is defnt'ly not like that- if that's any help for you =OuO=
Re: EU VC Releases - 21st September - Ninja Week
Re: Sin and Punishment
I hope al least this one will bw translated -_-
Does the player really move forward automatically like in Starwing/-fox!? Looks like going on rails... without rails! It's just because I like my Run'n'Gun games a bit more on the adventure-ish side, what other point in leaving your trusty starfighter or state-of-the-art battletank than for freedom of movement
Re: Mario's Super Picross
Hey, why is there only the first line of my previous comment? Was the rest I wrote so unfitting?
At least my warning that this only runs on screens compatible to 60Hz should be there
Re: Breath of Fire II
Re: Neutopia
So Neutopia is closer to Zelda LttP than to the original Zelda (NES)? Sounds good, because even so le latter is history in itself, I don't need another game of the same quality. But another game on par with LttP would be cool . Just one thing: instead of scrolling, the game seems to flip screens one-by-one like the first Zelda did- doesn't this limit the game somewhat? I'm thinking about space to dodge boss-enemies, for example...
Re: Neutopia II
This is an action-adventure, not an RPG. RPGs involve leveling by experience points of some sort while in an actionadventure you gain strenght by collecting the right items, even if it's something like a heartcontainer in Zelda. Although some might dissagree and say things like "you are playing a character-role" I'm just trying to make clear the technical difference so nobody can come back and say they had been missinformed ("How do I level up in this frikkin RPG (;_;)", or the likes... ).
Re: Mario's Super Picross
In the first level you get to chip out japanese letters >_
Re: EU VC Releases - 14th September - Double Japan-only games
Re: Mega Man
Even so I'm repeating what many others wrote before me, I never heard about any MM-collection in europe. *shudder*
Re: Bloody Wolf
This is rated as an ACTIONADVENTURE?! Does this mean I get to explore, collect items and abilities and than solve puzzles with them? It certainly does NOT look like it, especially with this Run'n'Gun-type of movie in the review
Re: R-Type III
Yup, it was, I remember having played it ages ago. It was thrilling and the effects where real eye-candy, but it was un-be-leave-ably hard!!
I think about getting I for VC but I'm telling all the kids out there: this game is nothing for people with a low self conciousness- you have to belive in yourself to see the end of this 8)
Re: Dungeon Explorer
It's easy to say "go level up", but can anyone say how to da that is this game?! Leveling works by getting the gems from the bosses and bosses don't reappear- so how should I gain levels without proceeding to the next (and ofcours more difficult) boss?
Anyone who thinks about getting this game should, in my oppinion, find an answer to that question before downloading it!
X-P
Re: EU VC Releases - 7th September - Sega week
Still, I would rather have had Landstalker- this game alone would have been a reason to get a MegaDrive, it's got to be on VC soon! And do we really need Ghouls'n'Ghosts for MD, figuring the SNES version had been released already? Anyone can tell me?
Re: Mighty Bomb Jack
I think I saw the original arcade game on my dad's C64. But i was like 6 years old or so back than. It would be good to get that original in here, maybe some day more systems are added to the VC, but for now I'll pass on this NES version.
