This link may be focused on political means, but Wedbush is a contributor to the defiling of political discourse through corporate money influence. Who's to say their Managing Director, Mr. Pachter, is not bending the truth to suit their plans in the games industry space?
@HarmoKnight I'd say the worst major Nintendo console system launch was the Gamecube. It had good games, interesting peripherals, and I liked it (and still have it + like it), but it got completely smoked by the PS2 and Dreamcast. (Or at least, the Dreamcast would have, if Sega of America hadn't ruined it...)
I'll wait until a substantial catalog of RPG's come out before getting it... my backlog of classics is too big on PC and older console systems, and (eventually) getting a 3DS XL and PS3 would be enough for me. Ni no Kuni and a host of other RPG releases are on PS3, not on Wii U at the moment...
I'll still test Wii U out at Best Buy, though... Waiting for Dragon Quest 10, Monster Hunter 4, Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101, Toki Tori 2, and hopefully some new game ideas not available elsewhere.
So I guess he's also saying every console's appeal is limited beyond their core fanboy audience... and he thinks "higher" price points have lowered from $600 to $350... boy, is he in for a surprise when the neXtBox and PS4 get announced...
Where are his Vita criticisms?
Oh, and if I get a Wii U, I would get Nintendo Land, Game and Wario, Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101, and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for sure. So that meets his attach rate criteria.
I'm impressed, usually it's Sony who sells their consoles at a significant loss at launch. This is rather unusual for Nintendo. Looks like they learned a valuable lesson from the 3DS launch.
@SCAR392 The Kinect might be a conceptual and creative failure, but it wasn't a fiscal failure. Over 10 million of them have been managed to be snuck into 360 player's hands. It also has a brimming mod community. So it lost a lot of potential with the loss of Milo by Lionhead Studios, but it has interesting mod potential.
@TheRealThanos One thing that dedicated console-tailored hardware still outclasses PC hardware to this day upon is optimization. Most PC gaming hardware has downright AWFUL optimization. This was much more obvious back in the 80s, 90s, and 00s, when PC gaming hardware rarely matched the output performance and presentation prowess of dedicated game consoles, despite supposed mathematical bonuses.
So, the practical real-world performance of consoles continues to defy mathematical indications of hardware use. Having a closed platform has potentially good benefits! Nintendo and their 2nd parties, in particular, have always demonstrated amazing optimization of software. How else would an enormous game like Perfect Dark N64 be squeezed into a measly 40 MB, whereas many developers cannot fathom using only 40 MB for a title on WiiWare?
Few games made these days really need a whopping 25 GB to operate, so it will be interesting to see how the Wii U optical discs perform. And yeah, asking for an equivalent to a dedicated graphics card could be unrealistic, since Nintendo engineers specialize in custom modified hardware. The modders will probably work on revealing the tech of choice soon enough.
@Sun Mainstream mass media tends to ignore proposing any real positive change on these subjects. Their current conduct in the Americas recently has further proven their inability to be harbingers of justice. In fact, they're practically just as culpable for wrongdoing due to their purposeful dodging of important and urgent issues.
Independent organizations without puppet strings attached, like NintendoLife, are more likely candidates to seriously address these issues.
The argument that Foxconn provides stable employment is loaded. Fair trade would always prohibit this sort of activity, which is now laying bare the potential evils of unregulated capitalism.
The free market/free trade economic systems of the world need to be reformed into fair trade systems. "Free" trade mainly benefits the wealthy and powerful, not by design, but because the temptation is too powerful for the executives to resist. I doubt they're out to get people just for the sake of doing so. This situation is just the unfortunate side effect.
This article series made me reconsider getting the Wii U at all. I didn't even think deeply about this sort of issue as belated as last year. I'll keep using my 3DS, but I won't buy a 3DS XL, even though it's overall a better product.
It pains me to do so, but it will hurt me a LOT less than it is hurting these folks. Until Nintendo returns to their high-quality manufacturing processes from before the DS and Wii era, when their systems starting being manufactured exclusively in China and none in Japan, I'm not buying their systems anymore. And I've had almost all of them since the NES!
Well, I still have plenty to do with the old systems and 3DS... and PC gaming and retro gaming is better than ever, now... And of course I'll still follow all the latest news pieces and NintendoLife coverage!
@TheRealThanos I subscribed to his channel, and you're absolutely right on all points. Even though Nintendo likely dipped into 2010 hardware, it's still far superior to anything from 2006.
@TheRealThanos In response to the Wii U vs. PS4 video...
I would think the PS4 would include a modified octo-core CPU or at least a modified hexa-core CPU, not a "measly" quad-core at this point, if it would really be a step up in specs from the PS3...
And the really good upcoming hybrid CPU/GPU chips have not been manufactured yet. If the PS4 opted for a modified version of a currently used hybrid, it would probably be bottlenecked by comparison within a year or two.
For the Wii U, I think something comparable to a Radeon 6770 might make more sense- that's a solid performing card going for a mere $100 if consumers buy it, so it would be even cheaper if bought in bulk directly by manufacturers. If the Wii Upad would be about $100, and a modified Power7 4-core CPU were $100, to match AMD $100 CPU's though... there would not be enough room for other things, by only spending $300.
Unless Nintendo switched to not making a profit off of consoles, that is...
Wow, the Radeon 4770, 4850, and even 6670 are all really low-end cards at this point. Those would be weak choices even compared to good price/performance ratio choices to complete a decent $400 custom-built PC specs optimization rig.
If the PS4 included a Radeon 7950, that would be half of the console's price right there, since its $300+. With all other amenities, it would be $600 minimum! How many people would buy a $600 PS4 at this point in time, instead of a tablet or PC, anyways?
MCV isn't even a moderately reputable game trade website. Visit places like Gamasutra.com, IGDA.org, or Gamesindustry.biz for some good game trade websites.
But just for arguement's sake... If anything, the current overpriced LCD-based 4K displays don't even come close to the reasonable price and higher fidelity of 1080p organic LED-based displays. So of course, affordable OLED 4K displays are several years away. Anyone who REALLY wants to pump up their tech specs beyond current 1080p standards should just get a PC instead of worrying about consoles, anyways.
Not to mention, as was previously stated in other articles, the current pricing on electronics is only as low as it is because of poor moral and ethical treatment of many Chinese workers. If the authors on MCV are expecting the general public to pay any more than $400 for a basic console setup, then they've lost touch with reality.
The Xbox360 only sold so well on release because it avoided sticker shock by partitioning useful accessories like memory storage and wifi modems apart from the console, which altogether made it MORE expensive than the $600 PS3. At the time, $500+ was the usual price for a blu-ray player, so of course the PS3 was considered a fairly good deal by the big media market players.
The PS4 and NeXtbox would probably cost around that same price in 1 or 2 years, if they had a noticeable improvement over current consoles.
Hey NintendoLife, why don't we tell MCV that the neXtBox and PS4 would just be stopgap systems if released within the next couple years! Who wants to pay $600 for just a console nowadays, anyways? Being charged that much isn't a fair deal... unless it's made with love outside of Chinese sweatshops.
@kkslider5552000 Standalone PC's future is finally in actual trouble now, though, since portable computers are now able to start competing technologically with larger equipment. I don't mean PC's are in danger of extinction now, I mean 20 years from now.
It looks uncomfortable, he had to contort his hands into robotic positions to use it. It was cute that he showcased "one of the most awesome games", Pro-Am Racing for the NES! "Tilting is not how games should be played." Depends on the game... "I hope Nintendo supports Android." FAT CHANCE.
Well...looks like the wave of the future is a blast from the past!
When the demonstrator was mapping the touch controls to the buttons, he had to drag them EXACTLY into the positions he wanted. Why would anyone ever think that's user friendly? The programmers should have made it so that it required 2 finger presses, it's silly that the player needs to drag icons to set commands. Maybe this was because of an error encountered due to that game being coded to have enormous icons blocking your view at all times, but it's still silly.
I gotta admit though, seeing that gave me flashbacks to Phantasy Star Online!
@Mahe Perception of value of any material product is based on the human concept of relativity. As an RPG gamer, the 3DS has offered me almost nothing in software, yet I still use it everyday. I wanted a 3DS because I found the tech more interesting than the games.
I once had the chance to obtain an iPhone 4, when my family went out to buy one for each of us. I rejected it, choosing to opt for a simple cell phone instead.
I thought of the situation this way: why would I want to pay an exorbitant amount of money every month for a smartphone, when I can have everything I need with separate dedicated devices which require lesser or no subscriptions?
The elephant in the room here is that Apple and their partners are making money hand over fist from subscriptions on severely limited "data plans", and people buy into them because they don't care that they could exchange infinitely more data through other means!
Nintendo doesn't have a perfect environmental track record either, but the business culture required to produce much of the current smartphone and tablet business is ethically and morally sickening. Their money is made from sacrificing the health of their workers and their environment, who have no say in the production process.
There is more to why avoiding smartphones and tablets could be wise, other than avoiding their ridiculous "subscription or brick" policy. Just because a lot of people buy into a trend, doesn't necessarily mean it's a good thing.
Guardian Heroes was/is awesome, and this probably has no chance of living up to it's awesomeness. But maybe it'll come somewhat close. Definitely looking forward to reviews.
Well, since he was helping to build Nintendo during a time when most people refused to sell video games, especially after the crash of 1983, it was probably a much more difficult time back then, compared to now. So they needed novel and special ways to attract people to their products. Now that video games are a given, fewer people go the extra mile for them.
@Zombie_Barioth Yeah, and I think that living in an era with almost no internet, then quickly entering an era where internet is ubiquitous was kind of like puberty.
Does anyone remember the Pokemon Snap kiosks in stores like Blockbuster, where one could print out thumbnail-sized sticker pictures, by using your photos from Pokemon Snap and Pokemon Stadium? To activate the kiosks, one needed to buy Pokemon-themed scanning cards. I used at least 6 different ones!
In Gold/Silver/Crystal, one could print out Pokemon Data from the Pokedex, by using the Game Boy Printer. Also, in Crystal, one could print out messages using the Unown letters. The Game Boy Color's IR port was practically designed for the Pokemon games, since it was needed for Mystery Gift transmissions, in addition to free card generation in the GBC version of the Pokemon Trading Card game.
Pokemon Stadium 1 and 2 made the best use of the N64/GB Transfer Pak, and the bonuses afforded by having everything needed was awesome for the Pokemon aficionado back in 2001! Stadium 1 offered a fairly easy way to legitimately perform triple speed speed running through Red/Blue/Yellow in the Dodrio Tower. Stadium 2 offered a huge library database of movesets, learnable moves, egg moves, egg groups, item descriptions, Pokemon statistic caps, you name it, it was in there! (Except EV/IV) Once you put in the time and effort, one could even triple speed run through Gold/Silver/Crystal! No subsequent generation has provided such opportunities through products, since everyone started using the internet. But this was all very handy back then.
Let's also not forget that Crystal version had an online component in Japan through cell-phones. They've always been way ahead of the West with this stuff...
Anyone interested in Fire Emblem info should check out www.serenesforest.net. They have plenty of info, including everything from DLC to developer interviews.
Anything can be a gaming device if you want it to be hard enough! My cats taught me that. They derive more enjoyment from a paper bag and "magic wand" than from feathers or mousie toys!
I had a chance to get an iPhone once, and I rejected it for a regular phone. None of my gaming consoles need exorbitantly expensive monthly subscriptions to be worthwhile!
I can't wait for the Circle Pad Pro Xtra Small for the upcoming 3DS Lite and the Circle Pad Pro XXL for the upcoming 3DS tablet! (LOL)
But seriously, this still won't quite sate the desires of southpaw stalwarts. If the goal of the bottom half of the 3DS is to be symmetrical, it will need to be redesigned. With a pen stylus or thumb stylus, the original DS was closer to symmetry since it used a simpler control scheme. Squeezing in analog functions with good symmetry would require squeezing in the necessary circuitry.
Increased dimensions, as with the 3DS XL, are not enough to satisfy conditions for comfort combined with practicality. A new design would be needed.

Re: Archos Uses Star Fox And Mario To Demo Its Console-Killing Tablet
It looks uncomfortable, he had to contort his hands into robotic positions to use it. It was cute that he showcased "one of the most awesome games", Pro-Am Racing for the NES! "Tilting is not how games should be played." Depends on the game... "I hope Nintendo supports Android." FAT CHANCE.
Well...looks like the wave of the future is a blast from the past!
Re: Archos Uses Star Fox And Mario To Demo Its Console-Killing Tablet
When the demonstrator was mapping the touch controls to the buttons, he had to drag them EXACTLY into the positions he wanted. Why would anyone ever think that's user friendly? The programmers should have made it so that it required 2 finger presses, it's silly that the player needs to drag icons to set commands. Maybe this was because of an error encountered due to that game being coded to have enormous icons blocking your view at all times, but it's still silly.
I gotta admit though, seeing that gave me flashbacks to Phantasy Star Online!
Re: First Impressions: Fire Emblem: Awakening
Still not a fan of the character art design, but the game looks to have been vastly refined from Shadow Dragon / New Mystery of the Emblem.
Re: Soothsayers, Begone - 3DS Software Sales Rise 89 Percent Over Last Year
@Mahe Perception of value of any material product is based on the human concept of relativity.
Re: Newest Code of Princess Trailer is Packed With Features
Guardian Heroes was/is awesome, and this probably has no chance of living up to it's awesomeness. But maybe it'll come somewhat close. Definitely looking forward to reviews.
Re: Talking Point: What Games Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue Seven
Deus Ex, Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magic Obscura, Final Fantasy 14, Faster Than Light
I need to get back to Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, and Growlanser 4: Wayfarer of Time... and Xenoblade... ENDLESS RPG BACKLOG.
Re: Ninterview: Howard "Gamemaster" Phillips
Well, since he was helping to build Nintendo during a time when most people refused to sell video games, especially after the crash of 1983, it was probably a much more difficult time back then, compared to now. So they needed novel and special ways to attract people to their products. Now that video games are a given, fewer people go the extra mile for them.
Re: Feature: The Bizarre History of Pokémon Technology
@Zombie_Barioth Yeah, and I think that living in an era with almost no internet, then quickly entering an era where internet is ubiquitous was kind of like puberty.
Re: Feature: The Bizarre History of Pokémon Technology
What gives!? This report is incomplete!

Re: Nintendo: Phones And Tablets Aren't Games Devices
Anything can be a gaming device if you want it to be hard enough! My cats taught me that. They derive more enjoyment from a paper bag and "magic wand" than from feathers or mousie toys!
I had a chance to get an iPhone once, and I rejected it for a regular phone. None of my gaming consoles need exorbitantly expensive monthly subscriptions to be worthwhile!
Re: 3DS XL Circle Pad Pro Release Date Confirmed
