Re: Nyko Tries to Make Circle Pad Pro Pretty

GreenDream

I STILL think that creating and bundling a new and improved thumb stylus with every 3DS, as was bundled with the original DS, would have been better than creating all these add-ons and stands. Less resources used, less silly peripherals. Kid Icarus was a perfect example of how a thumb stylus, combined with good touchscreen calibration options, can create a viable alternative to a 2nd analog piece.

Call of Duty is just the next in line from Medal of Honor. It will eventually fade into the ether, only to be replaced by something new. That's what the mainstream FPS genre is all about. An alpha pack leader claims the hill, gets killed by a young upstart, the young upstart ages into the new alpha pack leader, rinse and repeat.

For me, Perfect Dark, Halo 1, and Medal of Honor: Frontline were the last great console FPS titles

Re: Sakurai: Dual Analogue Control in Kid Icarus: Uprising Was "Technically Impossible"

GreenDream

Just for the record, I have played KI:U for about 13 hours game time, and have tried: holding the 3DS while using the stylus, using the stand while using the stylus, using the face buttons or d-pad for movement/aiming, and holding the 3DS while using my right thumb with the old DS phat "thumb stylus".

By far, using the "thumb stylus" was the most comfortable and ergonomically-inclined option for me...yet, because of the face buttons, lefties would get the shaft.

Honestly, Sakurai-san couldn't do much about this situation by himself- the hardware engineers were instructed to appeal to DS-owners, not to create a unique marvel of science.

Re: Sakurai: Dual Analogue Control in Kid Icarus: Uprising Was "Technically Impossible"

I think the CPP and "stand" add-ons are unnecessary wastes of resources. All Nintendo needed to do was update and improve the old DS phat "Thumb stylus", which they could do using the existing CPP wrist strap. Using the touch screen as an alternative "analog substitute" has interesting potential.

Also, I think if Nintendo's hardware engineers had removed the traditional 4 face buttons, then created a modified 2nd analog "circle pad", which would map commands similarly to PC controllers (such as the Logitech Dual Action), lefties would be honored and less contortion of the hands would be needed.

Nintendo had a chance to introduce some great ergonomic strides with the 3DS, and they blew it.

Re: Miyamoto Plays Games, a Lot

GreenDream

Miyamoto has actually been with Nintendo since the late 70s, so he has been with Nintendo for over 30, not 20 years. Miyamoto was about 24 years old when he was hired by the previous president, Hiroshi Yamamoto. He did not focus on school very much, and he only got hired because a family member was a friend of Yamamoto's. He got in through luck-of-the-draw networking and a good first impression, not raw talent, previous experience, or hard work. That would be an impossibly lucky situation these days... He also needed a few years of on-the-job training before developing his artistic talents later on, with Donkey Kong.

Re: Miyamoto Plays Games, a Lot

Lead game designers don't usually have the free time to play games for fun... and Miyamoto probably has less free time than them!

As Wheels2050 said, I would think that most of the time, those 10 hours is spent playing unfinished, broken versions of games in development; alongside of the QA teams. For example, while making Super Mario 3D Land, they probably ran Mario into EVERY wall at EVERY angle, then jumping at every wall at every angle, then crawling, then flying, then tail whipping, then... for EVERY single level...multiple times. Then doing it with 3D on, and off... "Playing games for a living" is not as simple as it sounds.

A game designer would typically only be given time to play their competitor's games to deconstruct them piece by piece using various flow charts, identify flaws, then formulate possible solutions that those designers could not implement; also being sure to factor in production limitations of the project in question. Surely he has tried using the PS Move and MS Kinect to influence his designs for Skyward Sword, and eventually for the Wii U... but he probably has done more critical observation than hands-on application.

Re: Sony President Thinks 3DS is Just an Updated DS

@Henmii Only outside of Japan. If current sales are any indication, PSP is ultimately going to be just as, if not more successful than the DS in Japan. Sony would be making a grave mistake to not include a comprehensive backwards compatibility plan for their loyal PSP customers...

Re: Nikkei Corroborates Previous Wii 2 Controller Rumours

GreenDream

This is stupid, there should be some sort of HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) equivalent to protect the rank and file workers from legitimate leaks. Whenever this happens, those people are put into a destabilized situation, which increases their work stress.

To use an RTS reference, the current system of security for video game trade secrets is a "fog of war". When that "fog of war" is unveiled, as in this report by a reputable source such as the enormous media corporation Nikkei, the corporate accountability of the trade secret (new product) is damaged, oftentimes resulting in a weakened stock market perception. This doesn't make the video game executives happy, and the video game employees are the ones who deal with the risk of lower compensation and/or tougher crunch times. If this leak is false, then whoever at Nikkei is responsible for it's release is in danger of losing their jobs.

I think the touchscreen controller idea is a step backward from the Wii Remote... the Nintendo R&D departments were given a slap in the face if this supposed touchscreen controller is all they were tasked with. The "link portable system to the console system as a controller" idea is archaic- remember the GBA to GCN cable? The SD card is enough for a standard of data transfer between different system types. The Nikkei report is worrisome... I hope Nintendo unveils something new and different... like a sensory controller.

It might even be something like emirblade suggested...

A sickly dread came over my heart when I read the title of this article. I pleaded: "PLEASE NOT SHANTAE...!"

And she was not in the firing squad lineup. I rejoiced! But the face of Jim on my SNES copy of Earthworm Jim 2 is scowling more vigorously than usual...!

Re: Sony President Thinks 3DS is Just an Updated DS

GreenDream

Well, he's right... Aside from the augmented reality cards, the current 3DS release schedule has no programs that contain otherwise impossible experiences. Nintendo's future offerings might make unique use of the 3DS, but for now... most of the software contributions are going the way of the Wii.

The Wii has plenty of interesting titles, yes... but how many of them could not possibly have been done outside of the Wii? If not for legal reasons, how many Wii titles could not possibly be emulated on the Arc/Move or Kinect? I think the Wii's unique game design potential remains rarely tapped upon.

Yes, I own a 3DS, and have owned one since April. I use it almost every day; I have accumulated 175,000 steps on the Activity Log with minimal use of "cheating", and my only choice of accompanying software was Steel Diver. Thus far, I think that every piece of software included with and released for the 3DS has either: been rushed, would benefit greatly from a firmware update, or could possibly be released outside of the 3DS with a substituted interface.

The problem is... unique design does not equal sales. Acclaim, yes... but not sales. There should be some sort of system introduced to reward unique and unusual design for both hardware and software creations; with further rewards for completion of projects, rather than rushing to meet an absolute deadline. Otherwise, trends and popularity will continue to decide dominance in the video game industry.

Re: Iwata Hits Out at Smartphone and Social Network Game Developers

GreenDream

I think Nintendo's stance in this issue is a rabid wolf in sheep's wool. I would be more empathetic to Mr. Iwata if he declared that Nintendo would not create games like Wii Play ever again. Refusing shovelware like Ninjabread Men would be another plus. I'm just holding him and his company to the high standards they (hopefully) dream of becoming commonplace.

Re: Rumour: Using Piracy Devices May Disable Your 3DS

GreenDream

Also, if the iPhone cases are any indication, then for electronic devices like the 3DS, it would probably be illegal for ANY entity, including Nintendo, to intentionally brick people's devices in the United States. Implementing proper signage of warnings is too unpredictable to be effective. Rumor topic is a rumor topic.

Re: Rumour: Using Piracy Devices May Disable Your 3DS

GreenDream

If the true hackers are as successful as they were with the PSP, they will probably be able to create custom firmware to keep to themselves within 6 monthes, and to rewrite spotpass 1.0 within 2 years. Nintendo will update their version, and the hackers will update theirs.

Honestly, this whole issue is still a big ? block. It remains to be seen whether the .dat and .iso files on the cartridges have been safeguarded. Hackers have duplicated the authentication system of Playstation Network, but the 3DS seems to use a new type of wifi authentication. Just have to wait and see what happens. If Nintendo does not pull the outrageous legal stunts used by Sony, then the hackers will probably respect Nintendo enough to not commit to a "war", as other posters have called it.

Pirating is a gray area, I think. It makes sense in places where it is economically impossible for citizens to sustainably import the European-descended lawful business style inherent to video game sales- a concept difficult to grasp for anyone who has not visited areas of abject poverty. It's like saying: "Because of who you are, where you were born, and the resources available to you... others shall have what you shall not. Such is your fate." That disgusts me...

Re: The Seller of this Golden GameBoy Pocket Wants $1,200

Interesting to see an article like this...

I actually used to own one of these until last year, when I gave it away to Purple Heart. Or some sort of charity, don't remember which exactly. It wasn't in SUCH mint condition, but it never received any major damage.

I don't regret that decision, even after seeing this. As long as it wound up in the hands of someone who actually used it, and opened up a history of retro gaming to that person, and not just be trashed...

I was subscribed to Nintendo Power from Dec 1994 - Dec 2002, so I own a couple of exclusive items from the old Power Supplies Club. Examples include the Donkey Kong Country Blockbuster 1995 Tournament Cartridge and the Gold Game Boy Camera.
