@Goofonzo If you are 42 then you remember paying a quarter, which was a lot in the '80's, to play (not even own) games that are arguably worse than these free games. Yet you won't dare soil your poor memory card with downloading any of these free games, with the chance that one of the developers better games gets put up free later. Yep I'm the weird one. Oh no free stuff, run, run like the wind. Lmao
Their library is not all garbage and free is free. It costs the time to download and the memory space occupied. Don't like it delete it. What exactly do you have to lose?
A lot of whining about free stuff. It's free, ignore it if you want. There are developers out there charging good money for games that are as bad or worse. So entitled, no one owes you anything for free get over yourselves.
@HeadPirate The first three announced I'll agree, but maybe we'll get lucky and they'll put up one of their better games in a later set of free games. You can download the games to continue the "chain" then just delete the ones that are no good, just in case they include one of their decent games in a later set.
This developer has made a couple decent games. It will be worth it if they put up Wallachia, Cyjin, Okinawa Rush, or Primal Light. Even Tanuki Justice was pretty good. Unfortunately they probably won't include these games and most of the rest of their library is not great.
@solidox I sent the originals in and now have two sets of joycons, and never need all 4 at once. That doesn't change the fact that due to joycon drift my choices were, have no Switch for an indefinite period of time (probably several months I was told) or spend $80 on a "non issue". Even under the best case scenario with a repair, a 2 week turnaround is a while to go without your Switch and not what I would consider a non issue.
@solidox Drift is a non issue? I guess you were lucky enough to never experience drift during covid lockdowns. Nintendo shutdown the repair center and I literally just had to go out and buy new joycons because the wait for a repair was unknown, but estimated at many months. So it was an $80 out of my pocket "non issue".
@thinkhector That's a good idea if you want them day one. However we all know that after a few months the Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium will be so heavily discounted that buying a few individual games at $4 each will end up costing as much as the entire collection. I'll be picking up the fighting collection and 2nd Stadium for the differences between them, but not until they're each half price.
@Herbalchunk1242 My old Switch only went for $260 with shipping on ebay, minus about $30 ebay fees, and $15 shipping, I got about $215 for it. So my upgrade to OLED set me back just over $100, I don't regret it for a second. It helped that the extra Switch OLED my wife bought for $320 in giftcards sold for $460 though. So the OLED launch actually made me money. And before anyone calls me a filthy scalper, I bought Gamestops limit of one OLED per person. I started the auction at below retail price. And best of all the winning bidder was buying the OLED for his nephew who's father died from Covid last year. The buyer was actually super grateful for my auction.
@Herbalchunk1242 I just called my local gamestop and they offered me $150 for my old Switch, I guess it's gone down since the OLED was released. I'll definitely get more on ebay. That's amazing that they were offering you the equivalent of $310 for your used Switch.
@Herbalchunk1242 That's an excellent deal I hope you jumped on it. Sadly I'm stuck selling my old Switch on eBay because my local gamestops didn't have any trade in deals. Last time I asked they were only offering like $230 in store credit for a used Switch. I have the box and everything like new, but no deals. I remember trading in my 3DS for a 3DS XL for like $50 or so years ago, I wish my local gamestops had the deal that yours had.
@Deserteagle17 I did not run into that issue, transferring over my save data was actually one of the easier steps for me. Maybe try initiating the process on your old Switch first then having the OLED connect. Also make sure your old Switch isn't in airplane mode and has wifi and they should connect.
@RareAir23 Oh man I'm sorry to hear that. I had a feeling there was some kind of anti piracy witchcraft going on that wouldn't allow this to be done in an easier manner. Nintendo needs to tie the games to the user not the system, seems it's too late for this generation, maybe next gen Nintendo will finally get it right.
To everyone, I know my posts sound very critical of Nintendo, but I'm actually a huge fan for over 37 years. Nintendo just makes some really wacky decisions sometimes. As I mentioned in previous posts this ridiculous transfer process is now going to push me over my data cap with Comcast costing me real money I have to work for. It's bad enough when you don't get to play your new system for days after release because the transfer process takes so long, but to have it end up costing the consumer money is unforgivable. I'll say it again, Nintendo needs to pay my overage charges to Comcast.
@LEGEND_MARIOID It really does take a long time. My internet is 800mbs and my OLED was downloading all night as I slept and I'm only up to "N". Mercifully I think "O", "P", and certainly "Q" will go by quickly. Then the dreaded "R", "S", and "T" will take all day. I'll repeat myself again, this process sucks.
@RareAir23 For some reason I thought the games were tied to the system for copyright protection. Oh well I'm doing it the hard way now. Hopefully your post helps someone avoid re-downloading everything. I really wish Nintendolife had mentioned your method, it's taking forever re-downloading every game.
@RareAir23 Won't the New Switch refuse to play the games on the micro SD if they aren't re-downloaded from the eshop?
If this works I really wish I'd known about it sooner. Not only would it have saved time, but it would've saved my data plan with Comcast. I'm only halfway through the letter "B", going alphabetically, and I've used over 10% of my entire monthly data allowance. I'm literally going to have to spread this out over several months to not go over my cap.
@LEGEND_MARIOID You can move your micro SD card to the new system and all pics and videos will still be on it, however the new system will force you to delete any games on the card and you will then have to re-download them from the eshop. I'm about 3 hours into the process and have transferred all my saves, moved over my island from Animal Crossing and am currently still on letter "A" of the re-downloading process. I'm guessing I'll have all my games on my new Switch sometime late tomorrow. This process is ridiculous if you own more than a few games.
@HolyGeez03 Fair enough. I think a lot of people are thinking the same way. My Switch is a first gen with the older processor so I'm looking forward to increased battery life from the OLED. The improved screen and speakers are big for me too since I play a lot in handheld. The additional built in memory, improved kickstand, wired LAN, and sexy white dock are just icing. I can totally understand not wanting to shell out the cash though. I paid for my OLED with gamestop giftcards I bought online for over 10% off, so it cost me less than $320. No sales tax here in Oregon. I also have an active Ebay account to sell my old Switch, I hope to get around $250 for it. So in the end upgrading to the OLED will only set me back about $70. So for me it was a no brainer to upgrade but I can see why some people would rather wait until an actual Switch 'Pro' comes out.
@HolyGeez03 You said those were 3 MORE reasons you didn't want the Switch OLED, therefore referring that you had previous reasons for not wanting the Switch OLED. I was asking what the other reasons were.
So if I'm reading this correctly I can't move my micro SD card from my old Switch to the new OLED. Instead I must re-download every game. I own over 800 gigs worth of Switch games. Is Nintendo going to pay Comcast for me going over my data cap? Oh, and I suppose I'll get a refund for NBA Playgrounds since it cannot be re-downloaded.
EDIT
So after a chat with Nintendo it seems that even games which are not available for purchase on the eshop anymore can still be re-downloaded if you owned it before it was removed from the shop. So the transfer won't cause you to lose any games but will take a lot of time and data depending on your collection.
@moodycat Apparently you cannot just move your micro SD card from your old Switch to your new one, you must re-download everything. I have a 1 terabyte micro SD with only 100 gigs still free. So I'm looking at re-downloading over 800 gigs of games. This is ridiculous, almost regretting my Switch OLED pre-order. This process is going to literally take days to complete for someone with as many digital games as us, not to mention use my entire months internet data allowance. As a fan since the NES I say to Nintendo, Come on figure out an easier way!
@TripleX I agree paying way over retail for something is dumb, but it isn't always just stupidity, for some people a few hundred extra dollars to get the system from a scalper is literally nothing to them. There are a lot of wealthy people that $200 to them is the equivalent of $2 to the rest of us. So we have this cycle set up where poorer people screw over other poorer people and buy up as many systems as they can get their hands on. This makes it harder for the average Joe to get a pre-order, while earning a nice profit for the scalper, and not really effecting the end buyer much because many of them are people who could care less about a few hundred bucks.
@SwitchForce The OLED Switch has several differences from the v2 Switch. For the extra $50 you get improved audio from the internal speakers (big for someone like me who plays in handheld the majority of the time), you get a vastly improved kickstand, you get double the amount of onboard memory (although it still isn't enough), you get a built in wired LAN port on the dock, you get a sleek looking white dock and white joycons, oh and of course the 7 inch OLED display is far superior to the 6.2 inch LCD.
Geez sure doesn't sound like it's the same as the v2 Switch.
I'm not spending $300 to upgrade my v1 Switch to a v2 just for better battery life, but $350 for the OLED Switch with everything I mentioned plus the improved battery life over v1 makes getting the OLED a no brainer for me. It's too bad that Gamestop limits it to one per family, or household, or last name due to scalpers.
Dang just imagine you are sharing a house with friends to keep rent low, your roommate orders the OLED Switch at Gamestop, now you can't because that address is only allowed ONE. Or the scenario I described earlier with a household with multiple children, too bad only ONE kid gets it. This isn't like a PS5 where one console for one house is usually sufficient. This is a hybrid game system where one console for an entire house may not be enough, it's portable, it's not hard to understand that people would want their own and not to have to share with their wife, kids, etc.
@Cheez Gamestop already does. Scalpers are ruining it for everyone. I got to Gamestop shortly after pre-orders sent live. I order my white OLED switch, then my wife goes to order hers and we are told only one per family. They literally check your driver's license to see if you live at the same address or even have the same last name. So now only one of us gets an OLED Switch, at least until next year when they are easier to find. I can't even imagine a family that has 3 children who all want an OLED Switch. Thanks to scalpers only one kid gets a Merry Christmas. How about the sites like Ebay, where these scalpers make their money, put some rules in force. Maybe brand new tech shouldn't be allowed to be sold until 90 days after release, or possibly make a rule that the selling price cannot be more than 20% over retail. However they will never set these rules because they make a ton of money in fees from scalpers selling stuff.
