Re: Review: Texas Hold'em Tournament (WiiWare)

Adamant

Yeah, it kind of does what it says on the tin, no more, no less. It doesn't do anything wrong, but doesn't add anything to it, either.
So yeah, 5/10 works. In this case, the review pretty much just makes clear that "the game doesn't do anything wrong", so from there, it's pretty much up to you whether you want to pay 5$ for a Texas Hold'em game or not.

Reading coments here, you get the idea that people were actively waiting for the review to see if this was some sort of super awesome magic game that everyone, no matter how much they hated poker, woul absolutely love. I honestly don't get you people, what were you expecting? What did you expect from this game? Why do you read so much into the score?

I might get this one once they release it in the US, since i don't really have any real opportunity to play online poker on the net.

It's not a bad release, and Digital Leisure doesn't "suck" for making this. It's not a terribly exciting game, but it fills a void in the Wiiware library, and there are people who were waiting for a game like this.

Re: Japanese Virtual Console list - April 2009

Adamant

@Sean Aaron: "Question for the Ninja Gaiden aficionados: how does the PCE version stack up against the arcade? Might it make more sense to get the VCA version (assuming there is one)?"

While there is an arcade Ninja Gaiden, the NES/PC Engine Ninja Gaiden games are not ports of it, but completely different games. The most sensible approach would be to get both the arcade one and one of the console games.
Also, watch out for the Master System, Game Gear and Mega Drive Ninja Gaidens , which are yet more completely different games by the same name. The Master System game has similiar gameplay to the NES/PC Engine games (but all-new levels and such, so it's more of a sequel), the Mega Drive game plays like the arcade (and again, with all-new levels), and the Game Gear game is completely different from all the others.

So that's 5 completely different games, all named "Ninja Gaiden". Collect them all.

Re: Review: The Tower of Druaga (Arcade)

Adamant

@ thewiirocks: "One of those RTFM-or-no-game-for-you games, eh?"

Nope, that would require there being any wayof getting hints for stuff, which ther isn't. It all pure trial-and-error and watching better players demonstrate how to do stuff.
It was designed for the arcade enviroment, and isn't quite as effective on a home system.

Oh, and it's not "a bad game". It's "a game you probably won't like". There's a difference. The score works, I guess, this is a terribly hard game to rate, since it's so individual whether you'll enjoy it or not.
Give it a try if you don't consider 5$ a massive loss if you don't end up liking the game.

Ah yeah, and "On one of the earlier floors, the treasure chest appears by walking over the exit door before getting the key, something you're not likely to do without knowing." - if you keep playing for a while, you'll eventually start with the door placed in an area where you're likely to walk over it before going to the key (especially this early in the game, before powerful pickaxes are available). It's a treasure you're bound to eventually uncover - there are several later ones that are near-impossible to accidentally stumble over.

Re: Gaplus

Adamant

@Corbie: "It wasn't nearly as popular as Galaga was in arcades, in fact many arcades ended up putting Galaga cabinets back in place when they got rid of Gaplus."

I can absolutely understand that. Having played this for a while now, it's an new, interesting and entertaining take on Galaga, but it doesn't really have that sort of instant classic "oomph" Galaga had. People going back to Galaga after having had their fix with this one sounds about right.

Re: SD Card Game Launching + Arcade Games Available on VC Now!

Adamant

" I only ask seeing that rated games like Shinobi and Fatal Fury Special were released as Arcade games as well, so it's possible they could be released in that version, now Arcade games are supported by VC."

Fatal Fury Special is a Neo Geo game, there's no real difference between the "arcade" and "home" version of those.

Re: Mappy

Adamant

Absolutely. Gaplus is good, but no classic, Starforce is old and outdated, and Druaga is not amazing, and a very aquired taste. Mappy is one of Namco's bigger titles, found just below their most recognized games.

Re: Final Fantasy Finally Coming to VC

Adamant

Yes, I call that a feature. Games that DO have auto-retargetting tend to be of the "hold A to win the battle" kind. Having to actually pay attention to what you're doing is a GOOD thing, and such a system forces you to be aware of both your own and the enemy's stats.

Re: Final Fantasy Finally Coming to VC

Adamant

"gameplay fixes (you can set options to attack someone else if your target has died)"

That's not a fix, it's an addition. The lack of auto-retargetting in FF1 was not a negative, but a gameplay mechanic that actually made you think a bit during battles.

"Final Fantasy, while revolutionary, opened a can of worms for videogames. Because of its success, we have thousands of games just like it."

That was Dragon Quest. Final Fantasy wasn't particularly inspiring.

Re: The Tower of Druaga

Adamant

You know, I'm kind of curious about what score this one will end up getting - it's one of those games that are most definitely not for everyone, and it's very hard to give it a score because of that.
A lot of people love it, but an equal amount of people absolutely detest it, so the overall message a review should give would be something like "you should try it out, but there's a large chance you will hate it and consider it a waste of points". How do you reflect that in a score?

I don't think anyone considers it a "bad game" either, it's just very individual whether you'll like it or not.

Re: Review: Star Force (Arcade)

Adamant

Yeah, Star Force was an innovator at the time, but nowadays, with pretty much every other shmup building on what this one did, it's hard to consider it more than an interesting curiosity.
Sure, it's as fun as it ever was, but there's nothing to be found here you can't find everywhere else, so it'll probably come across as a bit too archaic.

Re: Final Fantasy

Adamant

What, so "good game" is worse than "horrible game.. with more stuff"?

Plus, the PS1 version has a better interface, better translation and a beastiary, too, and that remake is actually good.

And yes, they ARE that bad. I can't for the life of me understand how people can actually find any fun in them (though looking a GameFAQs boards, and seeing tons of threads about "how to grind to level 99 easiest?", I guess it might appeal to the people who grind away all difficulty in all games they play anyway. Even still, the plot s kinda... not there, so I'm not sure what they see in it, either. You'd think they'd find more enjoyment in a "hold A as enemies die around you to reach next FMV" modern RPG)

Re: Final Fantasy

Adamant

The GBA and PSP versions are awful, mangled abominations.

Please, if that's all you've got, give this a download and see what you've actually been missing out on while thinking you've played FF1.

Re: Final Fantasy IV

Adamant

Yes, "Final Fantasy II for the SNES" was only released in America. Europe knew of it through game magazines only (and it was actually announced for release, then cancelled for some reason).
FF4 was never released as anything but FF4 anywhere but America.

Re: Final Fantasy Finally Coming to VC

Adamant

@Adam: "I've never played the first one, but I heard it is very hard and boring."

It's not, it's relatively light on difficulty, but can kill you if you're careless, and great fun to play.
The GBA and PSP remakes, however, are ridiculously boring and so easy you can beat them in your sleep. Stay away. Yuck.

Also, I really really doubt FF4 and FF6 will be released under those old, silly "FF2" and "FF3" names they had back then.
Square are actively marketing the games under their real numbers via remakes and ports and god knows what, and really wouldn't benefit from more confusion caused by people not knowing which game is which. It's already annoying enough with people refusing to refer to the SNES games by their real numbers "because it says 2/3 on my cartridge!!1".

The old numbering scheme is dead to Square, and it's i the best interest of everyone to let it stay dead.

@Popyman: "And VI, I've heard nothing but awesome stuff about that one."

Here's some negatives: Too easy, heavy character balance issues coupled with the fact that the only real difference between them are their unique battle ability, several battle abilities are badly thought up, and requires way too much effort to make "not as useful as others", the plot is rather disjointed and falls apart completely halfway through the game, and it's a rather mindless "plod along to next cutscene" affair at times.
Worth playing, but vastly overrated, and the beginning of the fall of the series, changing it from "holy crap awesome" to "eh, sure, whatever".

Re: Gaplus

Adamant

Because it's so good.
And possibly due to it never getting a console port, making it more "exclusive".

Re: Mappy

Adamant

Oh yeah, excellent game. Already got it at one of those Namco TV Game Plug-and-plays, but might download it here for convenience's sake.

Re: Gaplus

Adamant

It was even released under the name "Galaga 3" in some places.

Re: The Tower of Druaga

Adamant

@Drake: Yep. I downloaded this, and black space fills half my screen.

@Ferret75: Yes. This is, bar none, the evilest and most unfair bastard game ever made. It's strangely compelling though, but it WILL make you want to break things.

Re: Detana!! Twinbee

Adamant

@Syr: "20 blocks, really? For looking so much like Star Parodier it sure is smaller"

This is a Hucard game, they're much smaller than CD games. The CDs didn't really do much for the detail level of the graphics, but instead allowed for more animation and better music, so the Hucard games looking similiar to CD games on screenshots like this is no surprise.

Re: Review: Bomberman '94 (TG-16)

Adamant

@JJ: Get Bomberman Blast. Bomberman is all about multiplayer, and Blast's offering of online play more than makes up for the lack of a single-player mode, which was never something most people cared much for in the series in the first place.

Good games doing good.

Re: Review: World Heroes (Neo Geo)

Adamant

This game has a very unique style to it, and manages to stand out graphically with it's oddball cast of characters.
Unfortunately, there's not much more to it - the game itself isn't much more than a second-rate Street Fighter II clone. A lot of the characters are rather annoying to use, hit detection and priority is a bit... not off, but weird, several special moves are tough to pull off (Fuuma and Hanzou's in paticular), the two-button control scheme is icky to use, and the deathmatch is a failed experiment, doing nothing but annoy players. It's not awful, and it has it's charm, but it doesn't stack up to Street Fighter 2 very well, and for such a blatant clone, doesn't offer too much else of a reason to get it.

Also, the final boss is lame as hell.

Re: Secret Command

Adamant

Pokemon Puzzle League is a better game than Tetris Attack anyway, so it's not like we got the short end of the stick. If you're going to be childish and refuse to download a game because it says "Pokemon" on the label, no one's going to feel sorry for you.

@JJ: Mercs is the best game of the three you mentioned.

Re: USA VC Update: Summer Games II

Adamant

@touffeboy: There are 10 Master System games, 4 C64 games and 134 Nintendo games currently on the VC.
I don't see the problem.
Let the new systems catch up a bit, you stupid fanboys who refuse to play anything that's not on Nintendo have already got a massive library to pick from.

Re: Review: Summer Games II (C64)

Adamant

^Makes perfect sense to me. The chronological order these games were originally released in was Summer Games, Summer Games II, Winter Games, World Games and California Games. Since the four latter are already ready for release, why not do them in the original order?

Re: Review: Bit.Trip: Beat (WiiWare)

Adamant

@Objection_Blaster: "So how does saving work? Does it, or do you have to restart at lv1 each time when you turn off the Wii, etc.?"

It does save, but reportedly, you need to get on the hi-score list for a level for the next one to appear on the menu.

@Jockolantern:"This places Bit.Trip Beat on the same level as Toki Tori, Onslaught, or Mega Man 9."

Sounds about right to me, yeah. Have you even played this game?

@ZIMM: "great game! wish it had "retro" controls though. something analog besides the motion controls."

Uh... It does have "retro" controls. The controls emulate the paddle traditionally used in Pong- and Breakout-style games. It's the only real way to play this type of game.
The DS Arkanoid game includes a paddle to enable this type of control, too.

(Here's an experiment to try. Pick up Activision Anthology for the GBA or PS2 (which you should get anyway, because it's awesome). Fire up Kaboom. Try playing Kaboom with analog control, rather than the paddle controls it was originally programmed for. Cry.)

While I agree that the songs could've been a bit shorter and more numerous, I still say this is a 10/10. Is World of Goo REALLY that much better than this?

As for the "core" clue, yeah, Gradius is the first thing to come to my mind, too. Somehow, the image of Yar's Revenge keeps sneaking into my mind, though. The Yar is technically a core, right?

Re: USA VC Update: Summer Games II

Adamant

Because he played one of them as a kid, and not the others, and doesn't like things he's never tried before. Duh.

I must also say I'm really happy Nintendo "sucks" as much as they do, releasing a variety of games from many different platforms, rather than doing what the fanboy whiners want, and only release those games they scream the loudest about. Variety is good.

Re: USA WiiWare Update: Bit.Trip Beat

Adamant

Just picked it up as well..

Wow, this is amazing. Really blends the concepts of "video game" and "art". Best Wiiware game by far, probably best Wii Store game too, hell, maybe even best Wii game.

Are we looking at a perfect 10/10 here, Corbie?

Re: USA VC Update: Summer Games II

Adamant

Oh my, what ignorance from the silly kids who judge games based on what systems they're on rather than how fun they are.

(and why the hell do you care about Bomberman 94, anyway? It's the exact same game as Bomberman 93, just with a bit extra crap you won't ever care about. Plus, it's more expensive)

Re: The OFLC Rates Even More Games

Adamant

"Shanghai" and "Mahjong Solitaire" are different names for the same game. It's just that no one ever actually use the latter (and way too many people call it "Mahjong", which is a completely different game).

Plus, "Shanghai" is shorter and easier to both say and write.

Re: The OFLC Rates Even More Games

Adamant

"The OFLC has also rated a mahjong game called Shanghai II: Dragon's Eye"

It's a Shanghai game. That's why it says Shanghai in the title.

Also, it's probably the Mega Drive version, since that one was actually developed by Activision.

Re: The OFLC Rates Even More Games

Adamant

"The OFLC has also rated yet another import game - That means there's now 8 of them lined up for release in PAL regions!"

No, there's 9.

Bomberman '94
Detana!! TwinBee
Kirby's Dream Land 3
M.U.S.H.A.
Ogre Battle
Pulseman
Smash Ping Pong
TwinBee
Zoda's Revenge: Star Tropics 2

Which one did you miss?

Re: USA VC Update: Summer Games II

Adamant

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Pitstop 1 pretty much Pitstop 2 with worse graphics, no 2-player mode, and different courses?

I can understand releasing International Karate before IK+, since they actually do play differently from each other, but when it comes to Pitstop, the sequel is pretty much "the previous game, with more stuff".

It's like releasing Street Fighter 2 instead of going straight to Tur... oh.

Re: Review: Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars (SMS)

Adamant

@Dazza "That's like saying that Super Mario Bros 2 should not be accepted into the holy canon of Mario"

Well, SMB2 was eventually released in Japan as a Mario game, and material from the game has been used in many later games. Hi-Tech World was not only never released as an Alex Kidd game in Japan, but what little plot there is is directlycontracticted by Enchanted castle. Plus, it's original version is a licensed game they won't put on the Japanese VC, making it rather unlikely they'll release it elsewhere too.
