Unless you've been living under a rock, you have probably heard by now a new entry in the Luigi's Mansion series is on the way to the Switch later this month. Nintendo's even gone as far as making October 2019 the month of Luigi.
Also lining up with the arrival of Luigi's Mansion 3 is the release of the above video by the friendly folks over at Nintendo Wire.
It's described as an NES-style demake of the original Luigi's Mansion that first arrived on the GameCube in 2001 and was more recently re-released on the 3DS last October. While it's not an actual game, it still does a wonderful job reimaging what Luigi's spooky outing would have looked like if it was released during Nintendo's classic era of gaming.
In this retro state, the game plays out as you might have imagined. Ghost encounters, however, now take on the form of separate battles. There's even a look at Toad and Professor E.Gadd in all their pixelated glory, and towards the end, you can hear that funky lab music.
Nintendo Wire previously created demake videos for the Smash Bros. World of Light trailer and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

This looks amazing! Brilliant work
Not sur why the movement is so slow tho, I think it should be a bit faster. But otherwise it's great.
Where can I get it? My NES needs this!
**throws money at the screen**
Haha! Kirby’s inhalation sound as the Poltergust noise!
This is amazing. Great work
So, when is this coming on the NES classics on my Switch?
I'd be scared too if I could only move 1/2 mile an hour.....
I'm a sucker for these NES demakes. It really shows just how much could be done on the NES. I'd love to play this on my AVS.
Now I need to Play New Ghostbusters II on the NES, the true original Luigis Mansion...
Yeah this is actually great like.
Developers just weren't this creative in the 80s.
Doubt they would of thrown this idea together due to the hardware limitations.
Still this is a great video.
e-gadd, he scares me
Very clever. Nice work 👍
This looks like it could be fun. The SNES one could go full rail shooter like the arcade and use the super scope.
@TheFatPlumber only RUPIES will be accepted. which you don't have.. sorry can't have it. Someone else try. LMAO
That was a absolutely wonderful; they should try an SNES version of Super Smash Bros next.
@LeatherCorpse The irony with that is it would of worked.
Nintendo should capitalise on that and make a downloadable version for Switch.
It would sell on the novelty value alone.
All NES games have a spooky element to them.
Given how long it took to drain 10 HP from a basic ghost, this game would take forever to beat if it were real. Still impressive work, though.
I was hoping they’d show some portrait ghosts, especially bosses. But yeah, as cool as this looks, it would be a pain to play due to how slow movement is and how long it takes to capture a single ghost. I can’t imagine how long a late game Boo would take.
It's a curious coincidence that this remake gets announced so close to the release of the 3rd episode, isn't it...
To me, these demakes that show what a modern(ish) game would look like if it were 8-bit makes about as much sense as when someone photoshops a picture of a famous person to show what they'd look like if they were overweight. I just don't see the point.
I love it. This should always have been a thing!
@Madder128 hahaha. Indeed.
@Gwynbleidd you’re no fun at all.
Some people have way more time than I do.
I’m finally playing the Luigi’s Mansion 3DS remake, but it’s a struggle to want to continue due to the horrid control scheme.
I remember not being overly fond of LM: Dark Moon’s controls either, but I don’t recall them being as bad as the remake.
I’m going to try, but I may just end up skipping them for LM3.
@Kang81 About two years ago, I tracked down the original Game Cube game to see why it got so much praise. It's hard to be fair to a game when the first time you play it is more than 15 years after it launched, but... It really hasn't aged that well. Mainly due to controls, it was frustrating trying to keep the vacuum locked onto the ghosts.
@SortingHat The Amiga is like a magic mystery machine to me. They really never caught on in America so I only ever knew one person who had one. But I remember going to his house and seeing a game on his Amiga. It blew my mind! I had never seen such beautiful graphics before.
I don't think more scary is the right word. Just different style. Also, no thanks. Did you see how long that battle took? Imagine a boss...dang. Could you imagine how long it would take to beat the game, with a combat system, that slow?
@Zidentia being a coder myself, I know what you mean. I'd like to know when they started with this work and if their roadmap has been so easy and light that it could be done for free.
@Gwynbleidd I’m being facetious, take it easy.
They kept to the colour restrictions! good job!
@SlAlt
Exactly. I code for living but I have to have time for other things like sleeping and eating.
@TheFox
That’s my only issue really. I can flash strobe the ghosts with relative ease, but Luigi seems to have about a 30% chance to actually grab a ghost despite all visual queues showing I should have a direct hit. It’s quite annoying.
The original Luigi's Mansion is one of my all time favourites. I just wish the entire trilogy was in the Switch.
I just got the 3DS version yesterday lol.
This could be amazing if it were a real game. Definitely needs speeding up and a slight alteration on the theme music. But this is some incredible work.
This looks amazing!

That's pretty nice.
