Earlier today, a new earnings report from Nintendo revealed an updated list of the top ten best-selling Nintendo Switch games, but what about the 3DS, the Wii U, and even consoles earlier than those?
As part of the report, Nintendo has also provided updated figures for these older systems, and while software sales for these consoles are pretty few and far between - the DS totals have actually remained the same for months on end now - it's still interesting to see accurate, up-to-date lists.
You'll notice that as well as being the best-selling Switch game, Mario Kart sits right near the very top of every single list here. We knew it was a popular series, but seeing its success in cold, hard sales numbers is pretty mindblowing.
So, here are the best-selling Nintendo-published games for Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, Wii, and Nintendo DS (correct as of 30th September 2019). Both physical and digital sales are included.

This shouldn't be a shock that folks love mario kart. Why else would Nintendo make the mobile version. They knew what they were doing.
Kinda surprised (but not shocked) that more copies of Super Smash Bros sold more on the 3DS than WiiU. I know there was a larger install base, but the best experience (imo) is on the WiiU. Still, I probably did play more on my 3DS than I did on my WiiU. So I guess I just contradicted my own statement. haha.
The WiI list is almost completely made up of Blue Ocean software. It really did try to change the way people interacted with a gaming platform and the types of experiences it could deliver. I really miss the news, weather, and vote channels.
When is 3D world deluxe coming to switch???
The Wii U has best selling games ?
How quaint.
I'm ready for Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 HD remasters on Switch.
Mario 3D World Deluxe would be good too. They're probably planning that one, but saving it for a month where they have nothing else of interest to release.
Also looking for those Legend of Zelda HD remasters from Wii U to come to Switch.
Next year or 2021 Pokemon Pure Platinum built off of the Sword/Shield engine perhaps?
Really enjoyed Nintendo Land on the Wii U, was one of my favourite games actually. Really wish Ninty could figure out how to make a Switch version.
@Heavyarms55 I'd be game for Wind Waker HD to come to Switch! My favourite LoZ game, closely followed by Minish Cap, which I wouldn't say no to a remake of.
@Heavyarms55 I have no doubt 3D world deluxe will come, strange it hasn’t already when it was the second best selling game on the system and there’s no requirement for the touch screen
I wonder when Mario Kart 9 will get dropped. Mario Kart 8 deluxe is the best selling game on Switch (I believe) so I doubt they feel a rush but I do hope that Switch gets another Mario Kart.
This lines up pretty well with my favorites on each system for the most part.
Funny enough, in the Switch's first 2 years of launch, the Switch was completely devoid of most of my favorites as well... despite them being some of the best sellers...
No new Mario kart, no new and good Pokemon, no new Mario bros, no Animal Crossing, etc. If it wasn't for AC getting delayed, 2019 would undoubtedly be the year the Switch gets good for exclusives since MM2, SWSH, and ACNH would've been coming out.
Now the question is, when is a new Mario Kart gunna come and immediately rush to the top selling game on the system... with all the Switch systems sold, and more to be sold with the upcoming games people have been holding out for, I wonder if MK9 will out sell MK Wii...
This is only from 1st party games, though. Wonder what the top 10 looks like if you include other publishers? Possibly much the same for the Wii U but 3DS and Wii may have some surprises.
Wii U was great but had little PR and Nintendo didn't even try to keep support from the third parties. At least we still had Ubisoft and a few key others.
I'm surprised Mario 3D land isnt higher for 3DS, was a nice game to show off the 3D
Been bought Nintendo consoles with Mario Kart at first game (Switch, Wii, ...) ^^
Where Is Nintendogs Switch??
I feel if it was the second best selling DS game it definitely deserves a shot with better graphics and clever use of the switch touch screen and joy cons!
I loved Mario world 3d on the wii u cat mario. It looks like Mario kart is a winner over all systems hopefully thats a hint for Mario Kart Vr in the future and Mario kart 9.
The first mario kart i played was Snes when it came out but off all the Mario karts 8 is the best so far it handles so well.
F-Zero Gx would be lovely on the switch gamecube or a new game.
@delt75 If I recall correctly, wasn't the 3DS version available before the WiiU version? People may have bought that one because it was first and never grabbed the console version.
@mike_intv You may be right? I don't think it was too long though. I did buy it digitally for the 3DS right before I bought the disk for the WiiU.
Yup, got almost all of those games.
@pblive There is a whole lot more Just Dance on those charts if it includes Third Party software (at least on the Wii, maybe the Wii U charts). That game sold crazy numbers on the Wii.
@Darknyht oh, agreed, I was responsible for at least one purchase 😄. Got all the recent Just Dance games on Switch as well. Plus Rayman Rabbids games on Wii.
Breath of the Wild didn't even place? Geez. I mean I know that a lot of Wii U owners probably jumped ship to buy it on the Switch when it came out, but one would still think it would make the list.
How does "New Super Mario Bros. U + Super Luigi U" count into the sales of the two games, I wonder.
Also, Pokemon Black and White making the top but not BW2 is crazy. But I guess people just ignored the superior game because they didn't want to wait for the "Gray" version, and assumed the first game was enough.
(and WTF is Platinum completely missing. Hard to even play the first two after Plat.)
@Harmonie It was one of the best games on the system, but unless you purchased digitally it was also somewhat difficult to find at first. Ironically, you can still find it for sale on Wii U at most Walmarts.
@KingMike I actually place B/W over the sequels because I thought B/W only having new Pokémon until the post-game was so refreshing. Also naturally I’m biased toward the first time I experience the games.
