Update: It would appear that the character will be arriving later today in North America, while the European release will technically fall into tomorrow, 31st July, due to time zone differences. This adds up with the recent Twitter blunder from Nintendo of Europe.
Original Article: Dragon Quest's The Hero will be playable in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate later today, Nintendo has confirmed.
The announcement comes from a video presentation hosted by none other than series director, Masahiro Sakurai, which also gives us an in-depth look at the how the fighter will play in-game. Along with the release of Hero later today, a free software update will also be available which adds an in-game online tourney mode, a “Very Easy” setting in the single-player Adventure mode, and the ability to predict the winner in Spectate mode, among other features.
If you're hoping to get your hands on the character yourself, The Hero is available in a standalone Challenger Pack for £5.39 / $5.99 or as part of the Season Pass which grants you access to all five DLC characters (including the already-available Joker and upcoming Banjo-Kazooie). The Fighters Pass costs £22.49 / $24.99.
In the meantime, we've put together a gallery of all The Hero's alternate costumes and Dragon Quest Mii Fighter outfits, and also a more detailed look at the game's Version 4.0.0 update.
Do you have the Fighters Pass already? Will you be giving The Hero a try in-game? Let us know with a comment below.

Is anyone surprised by this, really? lol
I haven't picked up any of the challenger packs of the fighters pass as none of them have really interested me yet, but does £22.49 not seem a bit excessive for this?
Just where the heck do I watch this presentation? All these articles about it and no link or website where to actually view it live.
@EasyDaRon
Most Dragon Quest titles do not have any set name for the hero character, the only named hero to my knowledge has been Erdrick (sometimes "Roto" or "Loto") from Dragon Quest III.
@EasyDaRon that matches the series he comes from. The majority of them are nameless (to allow the player to name them) and they are usually called hero or if they have a title they are called that. Hero makes sense especially since this character involves multiple versions from different games.
@Ryu_Niiyama On the other hand, I can see where @EasyDaRon is coming from. The Zelda games (mostly) let you rename Link to whatever you want, but at least he has a canon default name to fall back on if that gets you more immersed.
@EasyDaRon the character is a vassel for the player. That's why it doesn't have a name but yours and doesn't speak.
That's what makes this series awesome, not stupid.

@RupeeClock And even then, Erdrick/Loto isn't even a name, it's a title given to exceptional heroes.
Seems like there was no EU version of this, so the release date is probably still tomorrow for us.
@Kalmaro thank you!
@TeslaChippie - However, Link has always been Link. Wolf Link, Toon Link, One Link, Four Link... Always Link. Hero has always been someone else, from Luminary to Erdrick. I always thought it was encompassing, essentially each one has their name, but from what I am hearing "Hero" is the name for them all individually. Which is strange since Erdrick and Luminary have names.
But it's still amusing since we had no problem over Villager, but had problems with Pokémon Trainer at the time they were introduced.
Wonder what the download size is. I would like to try him on my lunch break.
@lyle_catcliffe Sakurai livestreamed it, you can watch the vid on Youtube.
I guess we can finally say that we finally have an Akira Toriyama-drawn character in Smash.
On a related note, is it just me, or does the Martial Artist costume for Mii Brawler look like Tien Shinhan's outfit?
As a link main I am very please. He also has Ike's Nair, I used to main Ike, falcon, and Link in Sm4sh. But now Ike is too fast for the way I used to play him and falcon is hot garbage. Seeing a new character that's a good mix of Link, Roy, and Zelda-ish magic makes me very happy!
@lyle_catcliffe no prob!
I see the Hero coming in at Noontime, or at least Nightfall in my territory.
@astrofan1993 Yessir, my comment to my friend as soon as that appeared on screen "hey look you can finally play as Tien".
They knew what they were doing.
Definitely not a character I would ask to make the cut to Smash Bros. But that’s just me not being much of a fan of Dragon Quest. But I’ll still try out the character for sure.
Goku is gonna be OP in Smash, just like he always was. Watch how quickly he gonna get banned from competitive tourneys because he is an anime character. Goku lovers are so gonna be let down that this will be the last time we let anime in Smash.
@N1ntendodo Yeah, Goku is basically a One Punch Man, because One Punch is all it takes to send your opponents flying!
Yikes! RNG Critical hits on smash attacks and the command menu (while tied to a magic meter) has a lot of specials and are looking to be busted. Don't know how the hero is gonna fare in competitive play....
Either case. Stage is looking nice. We got more than two songs and dragon quest spirits to fight. Thank you for doing this Sakurai.
Hero from Dragon Quest? More like My Hero Academia... because the Hero is going to take everyone to school!
(I don't watch anime or play Dragon Quest really, but that won't stop me from sharing a dumb joke)
@YoshiAngemon No, no the Hero is Goku. He is trying to disguise himself into Smash, but his power stands out easily. Also, his face is pretty similar. Theres no use hiding it. Goku is in Smash, but he gonna get in trouble real quick.
@N1ntendodo Goku is in Smash Bros. in spirit...or at least in one half of a spirit.
The Hero draws near!
...later here in North America.
I just want Banjo. No real interest in the Hero or Joker
@Multifists - Pretty sure Erdrick is a name. Luminary is a title for what is essentially a nameless hero, but it was specifically made for that particular character. Another example is Dragonborn of Skyrim. That's half the roster that isn't Hero. And would be more hazy since "Hero" is basically anyone who had played their fair share of RPGs can default to this.
@TeslaChippie But you said it yourself Link has a default name. The hero doesn't its a part of the DQ lore.
Guess I better get used to fighting the hero then. I get matchmaked most frequently with Japanese players, so I expect to see these characters a lot. Joker already was kicking my butt so this is going to be really detrimental to my already poor GSP. Nonetheless, bring it on Hero! Gotta fresh paintbomb for your new clothes.
@EasyDaRon Wow, what an original name!
@Paraka Well, if you want to know the Heroes' Names, they're Eleven, Eight, Solo, and Arusu.
@YoshiAngemon - So it furthers my original statement about the names. Not been huge in DQ outside Monsters, so my knowledge is lacking.
Still weird to have a blanket name when Bowser Jr. Has the koopalings individualized
@Paraka Well, the koopalings got canon names while the names Names like "Eleven, etc" were invented by Japanese fans who needed to refer to these characters easily, but there is no such thing in the West. So, calling the characters by the names of Japanese fans would not really make sense, here we can better recognize the silent hero of Dragon Quest if he is just called "Hero" rather than Eleven.
I agree it's better to have a hot name, but it's not, so we deal with it.
I completely forgot this Smash extravaganza was today. XD Eh, this is why news feeds exist.
@astrofan1993 Tbh it's not surprising because again it's the same artist. Though that look is specifically based on Dragon Quest 3's martial artists since the game let you made your party out of custom characters from a multitude of classes.
This said Veronica being a swordfighter makes me a little mad we still don't have a true "wizard" Mii archetype and must instead continue to shoehorn wizard-type characters into archetypes that really don't mesh all that well with their abilities.
Gunners are the closest abilities wise but that honking arm-cannon and some of the gun-like standard moves really clash with a wizard aesthetics... meanwhile swordfighter can fit a bit more thanks to staves meshing with some sword moves but ultimately the only two spells that mesh well with the wizard look are the tornado and reflect moves. And let's not even get into Brawler whose only ranged attack is throwing an iron weight <.<
It's like... it's cool we DO have those wizard characters as possible costumes, but could we finally have a moveset that FITS them???
It's not like we even have a lack of refference moveset and abilities anymore with formal spellcasters like Zelda/Palutena/Robin and even now Dragon Quest's heroes which bring a literal smorshgabord of spells X_X
Hope we win dragon quest monster trophies for guessing right. Fun idea for spectate, especially given labo
Definitely my favorite of all the DLC characters so far. I'll definitely be playing Smash tonight! (assuming the server doesn't explode)
Didn't care much for Joker, but now the DLC is looking worth my purchase. Hero is so much cooler!
@Paraka Erdrick is a Title given to the Dragon Quest 3 hero at the end of the game. Prior to that his name is whatever you give him. In fact, the Dragon Quest remake on GBC won't let you put Loto (The japanese name) into the name box for the DQ3 hero ( though I haven't tested this on the Android remake with Erdrick or the NES original)
@RevampedSpider NO.
@Wavey84 we’ll see how Banjo turns out. That’s a pretty good choice.
I honestly haven't touched SSB in several weeks. I only find the game fun playing with friends on the couch. And when my friends and I all have full time jobs and live hours apart, that doesn't happen too often. lol
@Wavey84 all good choices you mentioned. 👌🏾
