The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword HD Heart Piece Guide

There are a grand total of 24 heart pieces for you to find during your adventures through The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, with every four of these that you collect adding precisely one heart to your total health supply.

Collect all 24 heart pieces — as well as snapping up the six heart containers and two heart medals that you'll receive as rewards for defeating bosses and opening Goddess Cubes — and Link will end up with a whopping 20 hearts full of health, giving you much more of a fighting chance in boss battles and general combat.

Whilst some are a breeze to find, hidden in places you're sure to stumble upon naturally, others can be a little more tricky. Fear not, however, as in this guide we've detailed the whereabouts of each and every heart piece in Zelda: Skyward Sword HD.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD: Every Heart Piece - Complete Location List

Heart Piece 1 Location: Faron Woods

Once you've started your journey proper and left the safety of Skyloft, the very first place you'll arrive at on the surface is Faron Woods. Not too far into these woods, you'll happen across an area with a great big tree slap bang in the middle. Have a quick look around the roots of this tree and you'll find a slope heading upwards that's guarded by an Octorok. Take care of the Octorok with your trusty shield, clamber up the slope and head across the tightrope in front of you to nab your very first heart piece. Easy!

Heart Piece 2 Location: The Lumpy Pumpkin

Not too far away from Skyloft, you'll find the Lumpy Pumpkin where, upon entering the building for the very first time, your eyes will likely be drawn to a heart piece perched atop the large chandelier that hangs in the centre of the room.

In order to get your hands on this second heart piece, you'll need to run up to the second floor and dash and roll against the piece of railing nearest to the chandelier, causing it to sway dangerously. Continue to dash and roll a few more times and the whole thing will come crashing down to the floor below where you can now grab your heart piece.

Heart Piece 3 Location: The Sky

Your third heart piece requires a little more groundwork as it's locked within a Goddess Chest located very near to Skyloft. Fear not, however, as the Goddess Cube which opens this particular chest is located in plain sight and is impossible to miss at the entrance to Skyview Temple, which you'll arrive at early in the game.

Once you've delivered a strike to this cube the location of the chest will appear on your in-game map. Simply jump on your magnificent Crimson Loftwing, ride to the location indicated and heart piece number three is all yours!

Heart Piece 4 Location: Skyview Temple

Once you're in Skyview Temple you'll quickly stumble upon a large room with a huge bird statue sat slap bang in the middle. Have a quick nosey around the base of this statue and you'll find a heart piece trapped behind some iron bars.

In order to release this next piece from captivity, you're going to need to hit a red crystal switch located high above where you're stood with your Beetle tool – which you can acquire very nearby if you've yet to do so.

Once you've got your Beetle, stand back a little ways from the trapped heart piece and aim upwards, fire off your Beetle and without too much trouble you should be able to locate the required switch near the top of the bird statue, freeing heart piece number four. You should also now have added precisely one extra heart segment to your overall health. Congratulations!

Heart Piece 5 Location: Eldin Volcano

Not too far into your journey through this fiery region, you'll come across a skeleton bridge on the main route – it's the one you'll need to roll a bomb across in order to destroy a plug holding back some lava.

A quick search around your immediate vicinity here will uncover some platforms that lead up and around to a vantage point where you'll find your next heart piece sat in the open overlooking the aforementioned bridge. Nice and simple.

Heart Piece 6 Location: Lanayru Desert

Once you've acquired the ability to carry bombs you'll be able to go blow a hole in a wall located in the top northeast corner of the Lanaryu Desert map – this is the same wall you'll need to blow up in order to expose a passage to Goddess Cube 17.

The crack here may seem unreachable due to the sinking sand surrounding it but check your map and you'll find you're safe owing to the underground roads beneath the surface. Get that sucker blown apart and wander up this narrow secret pathway to find a blue chest containing your prize.

Heart Piece 7 Location: Skyloft

This heart piece requires you to have found ten Gratitude Crystals, which you can then offer up to Batreaux in his underground hideout for your reward.

The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword HD Heart Piece 7

Heart Piece 8 Location: The Sky - Beedle's Island

Acquired by flying to Beedle's Island in the northeast region of The Sky, this heart piece can only be obtained once you've struck Goddess Cube 12 and unlocked access to the chest which is sat in the open here.

The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword HD Heart Piece 9

Heart Piece 9 Location: Dodoh's Fun Fun Island

There's a little bit of legwork and patience involved in nabbing this heart piece. You'll first need to undertake a short side mission which sees you retrieve Dodoh's Party Wheel from The Surface after he accidentally drops it off the edge of his island — we don't think we've ever seen a clown look so distraught — and then you'll need to play his High Dive mini-game.

Here you'll need to successfully glide through every ring, avoid the Dodoh balls AND land on the multi-coloured moving platform segment at the bottom in order to claim your prize. Good luck!

Heart Piece 10 Location: The Lumpy Pumpkin

Once you've acquired the Goddess's Harp you'll want to return to the Lumpy Pumpkin where you agreed to run some errands for Pumm after smashing his prize chandelier whilst nabbing heart piece #2 on this list.

You'll have a few tasks to run through for Pumm here, delivering hot pumpkin soup and helping carry stacks of pumpkins in a frustrating balance game, before finally helping entertain the audience at a night-time gig by strumming along to some music. Complete all of these and you'll finally get your hands on this heart piece.

The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword HD Heart Piece 11

Heart Piece 11 Location: Faron Woods

After you've got yourself equipped with some bombs, make your way to the Southwest of Faron Woods and locate a wall with a suspicious crack in it. Now simply blast that sucker open and claim your prize. Easy!

The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword HD Heart Piece 12

Heart Piece 12 Location: Skyloft

You'll need the Water Dragon's Scale in order to grab this heart piece and you'll also need to have struck Goddess Cube 9 with your sword in order to unlock the chest in which it resides. Once you've got all of these prerequisites in order you can swim up and under the storage shed in the centre of Skyloft – the underwater entrance is clearly visible in the main river – to get that shiny chest open and grab this one.

The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword HD Heart Piece 13

Heart Piece 13 Location: The Sky

Once you've struck Goddess Cube 14 the island location of this chest will show up automatically on your Sky map but you'll still need to use your Clawshot or do some pretty nifty skydiving in order to nab it from its perch on the inside portion of this rather small landmass.

The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword HD Heart Piece 14

Heart Piece 14 Location: Skyloft - Knight Academy

This next heart piece requires you to do the unthinkable and sneak into Zelda's room at the Knight's Academy, and in order to do so, you'll need to have acquired the Clawshots. Get yourself up onto the roof here via the normal ledge route that you'll doubtless have traversed multiple times by now and then grapple up to the chimney. From here you'll find yourself in a little roof space vent that drops down into Zelda's room where the heart piece awaits in her closet. You monster.

The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword HD Heart Piece 15

Heart Piece 15 Location: Lanayru Desert - Sandship

During the portion of the game where you're clawshotting your way around the masts of this dungeon ship, you should take a moment to make your way to the very back of the vessel via the ziplines that carry you to the upper rear deck area.

Once there look for a grappling point on a pole directly in front of you – it's pretty much impossible to miss – and then grapple your way down to a hidden area of deck where you'll find this heart piece nestled in a blue chest.

The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword HD Heart Piece 16

Heart Piece 16 Location: Skyloft

The fruits of your labour in finding and striking Goddess Cube 21, this heart piece is located inside a chest perched atop the highest point of the waterfall islands on the right-hand side of Skyloft – its exact location will, of course, appear on your map as you've soon as you've struck its corresponding cube. Grapple your way up here via some vines and quickly nab this one.

The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword HD Heart Piece 17

Heart Piece 17 Location: Skyloft - Knight Academy

Another side mission-based heart piece, this one requires you to do some groundwork with good old Fledge. Visit Fledge at night in his room and you'll find that he's been working out in an effort to get ripped and shredded. He's flagging though, not really cut out for all this strongman stuff is our Fledge, so you'll need to bring him two stamina potions in order to help him delude himself a while longer.

Once you've done this you'll gain access to a mini-game where he'll task you with using your bow to shoot down pumpkins. The score per pumpkin here accumulates with every shot you make in succession, and you'll need to score over 600 points in order to grab your heart piece. Please don't break your controller out of frustration here if you can help it, it's not behaviour very becoming of a hero and Zelda will be disappointed in you.

The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword HD Heart Piece 18

Heart Piece 18 Location: Fire Sanctuary

You'll need to have acquired the Mogma Mitts for this one. Make your way through the top north-western area of the Fire Sanctuary map and you'll find a spot to burrow down into the ground and play a little mini-game of sorts where you chase a Mogma. Catch this guy and he'll cough up the heart piece you require.

The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword HD Heart Piece 19

Heart Piece 19 Location: Volcano Summit

Remember the area at the Fire Sanctuary with the frog fire gates? Those ones you needed to collect water for in order to pass by? Well, this heart piece is located in a burrow hole that's set to one side of the second of these gates. Simply dig down and follow the path to pop out and nab your prize! You'll once again, obviously, need your Mogma Mitts in order to succeed here.

The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword HD Heart Piece 20

Heart Piece 20 Location: The Sky - Thunderhead

Later on in the game, once you've accessed the Thunderhead area and activated Goddess Cube 22, you'll be able to nab this heart piece from its Goddess Chest by clambering around this small island area – the exact location will be marked on your map after you've struck the cube – and getting yourself to the very top where you can edge out and drop down to the tight ledge upon which it's perched. It's well worth investigating other hidden parts of this island for a few other bits and bobs too!

The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword HD Heart Piece 21

Heart Piece 21 Location: Shipyard - Rickety Coaster

Another heart piece tied to a minigame; here, you're gonna have to pass the coaster's expert course in under 65 seconds in order to claim your prize. Hang on tight!

The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword HD Heart Piece 22

Heart Piece 22 Location: Sealed Grounds

Speak to Gorko the Goron at the Goddess Wall located outside the right-hand exit door of the Sealed Temple (he appears here late in the game, after you've beaten The Imprisoned) and he'll ask you, in a roundabout fashion, to draw something specific. When we approached him his clue spoke of an "arrow in repose" so we drew an arrow sitting horizontally with its tip pointing eastward in order to claim our heart. You may be asked to draw something different though so here's a quick list to help you out:

  • Heart shapes produce hearts
  • Hexagons give you Rupees
  • Circles grant you bombs
  • The aforementioned arrow gets you arrows for your bow
  • A Triforce or pair of wings summons some fairies
  • An unrecognisable mess will net you some hearts

Pick up on the clue he gives you when you speak with him and use one of the above to net your heart piece!

The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword HD Heart Piece 23

Heart Piece 23 Location: Skyloft - Beedle's Shop

That pedal-pushing rip-off merchant Beedle will sell you this next heart piece for 1600 Rupees(!) once you've bought enough of his tat for it to appear on his counter. If you've managed to complete his side-quest before you pick this one up you'll get it for half price, which takes some of the sting out of this transaction. We still think someone should pop his airshop's balloon someday, though.

The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword HD Heart Piece 24

Heart Piece 24 Location: Lanayru Gorge

Once you've managed to best four bosses in the Thunder Dragon's Lightning Round mode – a boss challenge where you get to square off against all of the game's big bads – you'll get your hands on this final heart piece.

It won't be easy, and you'll need to stop and quit as soon as you've beaten exactly four bosses but once you manage it you'll have acquired every single heart piece in the game. Congratulations, you are an actual legend and you should probably go outside for a walk.
