Ironcast (Switch eShop)
£3.24 (-75%)
A match-three puzzler that manages to juggle a lot of different genres, Ironcast is an in-depth and engaging game; uniquely innovative and frustratingly addictive. The various elements being fused here make for a game that is endlessly replayable, but not at the cost of becoming repetitive or boring. If you’re looking for a game that can be a good time sink, but can also be comfortably played in short bursts, do yourself a favour and try this one out.
Gone Home (Switch eShop)
£3.49 (-71%)
Several years on, there’s no denying the cultural and developmental impact Gone Home has had on the game industry. Both as a near-perfect exercise in interactive storytelling and an example of how to handle complex and very real ideas in a game, only Life is Strange has ever come close to matching its significance. While there still isn’t much ‘game’ to be found here, the story you unravel through exploring an empty home will stay with you long after you’ve put down your Switch. Essential.
Rogue Legacy (Switch eShop)
£2.19 (-80%)
Rogue Legacy is a simple take on the tried-and-true roguelike formula, but it executes what it sets out to do exceptionally well, making for an endlessly replayable and enjoyable action adventure that no fan of the genre will want to miss out on. A high difficulty level, funny writing, tight controls and rewarding RPG mechanics make this one an effortless recommendation; the design of the game makes it easy to play in short bursts or long sessions, which means it's a great fit for the Switch. If you enjoyed Dead Cells, Castlevania, or any 2D sidescroller in that style, you’re almost certain to have a blast with this one.
Card Shark (Switch eShop)
£8.99 (-50%)
Card Shark is the kind of game that at first blush seems like it just won’t work. Lots of dialogue bookended by brief, simplistic minigame sequences seems like it would make for an experience that would lose its luster quickly, yet we couldn’t put it down. Witty writing, high-stakes gameplay, and a gorgeous art style all come together here to make for a game that’s well-executed and unique in its appeal. If you’re looking to try something awesome that notably bucks most modern gaming trends, Card Shark is absolutely something we’d recommend, well worth your time and money.
Faeria (Switch eShop)
£4.49 (-75%)
Along with the expected multiplayer modes (ranked and casual battles), Faeria delivers a compulsive, interesting and frankly enormously fun card battle experience. While not the easiest game to explain, it's an impressive teaching tool for itself, but never feels overwrought or tiresome in said education. Of the card games we've enjoyed on Switch, Faeria is easily the highlight of the bunch and deserves to do well. It's a full-featured package and stands out as an excellent card/board/strategy experience. If you want to play a fantasy card game on Switch, we'd recommend this one first.
Kaze and the Wild Masks (Switch)
£4.49 (-75%)
An absolute pleasure from start to finish, what Kaze and the Wild Masks lacks in originality it makes up for in the strength of its level design, responsive controls, kinetic move set and attractive visuals. Excellent, action-packed platforming through and through, with great gameplay variety and gimmicks that don’t compromise on what the game is best at — challenging, fast-paced obstacle courses and deviously-hidden secret areas. Easiest sell? Kaze and the Wild Masks is to Donkey Kong Country what Freedom Planet was to Sonic the Hedgehog. Don’t miss this one.

The Touryst (Switch eShop)
£12.59 (-30%)
The Touryst is a joyous little adventure that sinks its blocky hooks into you and doesn't let go until it's done. It's got a perfect balance of atmospheric puzzling, leisurely exploring and minigame madness that'll keep you thoroughly entertained from start to finish, and its collection of tiny little voxel islands are a joy to discover, bursting with surprises to uncover and presented in a truly dazzling art-style that's achieved whilst performing flawlessly on Nintendo's console. The puzzles might not be the most taxing you'll ever come across and you'll blow through the whole thing pretty quickly, but overall this is a top-notch – and perfectly priced – little gem.
Steredenn: Binary Stars (Switch eShop)
£3.59 (-70%)
Steredenn: Binary Stars is a fantastic release that does a great job of providing an experience that feels simultaneously classic and modern. Its high difficulty, rewarding gameplay, endless variety, and beautiful presentation make this an essential buy for any fans of the genre, and a high recommendation for those who aren’t. If you’re looking for a tightly made arcade game that can be played both in short bursts and for hours on end, here's yet another one for your list.
Subnautica (Switch eShop)
£8.24 (-67%)
When Unknown Worlds announced they were bringing Subnautica to Switch we were hugely excited, this is one of our all-time favourite games after all, but it was excitement tempered with a degree of scepticism as to how on earth they'd manage to cram the entire experience onto Switch in a properly playable manner. As it turns out, we needn't have worried as this is a super solid port that — besides a few loading stutters here and there and some scenery pop-in that's present in every other version of the game — successfully delivers one of the very best open-world survival experiences on any platform to Nintendo's hybrid console.
Windjammers 2 (Switch eShop)
£10.79 (-40%)
With Windjammers 2, Dotemu has taken the fiendishly addictive core formula of the Neo Geo classic and improved upon it in every way. The core gameplay here remains as immediately endearing as ever whilst being enhanced and given a real strategic kick by a bevvy of new moves and skills that add to the fun without detracting from or overcomplicating proceedings. Yes, there's not much in the way of modes, but this is another banger from Dotemu — an all-time classic improved upon, an arcade classic refined for a new generation.
Tetris Effect: Connected (Switch eShop)
£17.99 (-50%)
Tetris is one of the greatest video games of all time, and Tetris Effect: Connected is perhaps the best iteration of the classic puzzler yet. While this Switch port doesn't offer a great deal over existing versions in terms of features, it delivers the one key ingredient that its rivals cannot: portability. Sure, some will argue that Tetris Effect: Connected's unique brand of synesthesia only really comes alive when played on PSVR or an Oculus Quest headset, but we'd argue passionately that this game benefits far more from the ability to pick it up and play whenever, wherever. Just as the Game Boy and Tetris combined to create an irresistible, world-conquering fusion back in 1989, Tetris Effect: Connected has finally found the hardware that allows it to truly shine, making this an utterly essential purchase for all Nintendo Switch owners. Just don't forget those headphones.
That's all of the titles in Nintendo's 2024 New Year eShop sale that we awarded a 9/10 or higher, but there are many more wonderful games that landed an 8/10 for you to check out too — though you will have to sniff those ones out for yourself (there's a lot).
Take to the comments to let us know if you are picking up any of the above and be sure to flag any other 9/10s on sale that we might have missed.

The only one on this list is Lumines Remastered. Which I'm gonna buy physically. Cause I'm pretty much adverse to digital. Weird enough but it is what is.
Picked up Astral Ascent earlier which makes up 40/67 of these games that I own on Switch (although I'd only agree on the 9/10 score for around half of those). Most of the others don't appeal to me too much.
Goddamnit I JUST got off of a massive eShop splurge during the last sale, yet I'm extremely tempted to pick up a bunch of beatemups I've had my eye on for the past long while here like Streets of Rage 4, TMNT: Shredder's Revenge and Lego DC Super Villains. WHEN WILL IT EVER END 😭
I would love to see de Blob on sale, my daughter loved it on the Wii / Wii U, and I’d definitely buy it again on Switch with a discount.
@AmplifyMJ Not sure if the first one is on sale (already own it) but de Blob 2 is. So I would think the first likely is too. Just a heads up.
@XenoShaun well thank you, I appreciate that!
I think there is 50-52 of those games I own. Astral Ascent is on my wishlist and hasn't been downloaded yet so it's good to know it's on sale. I think that's the only one that I have left of this list that I really want and don't own already
"300 Affiliate Links You Should Click in 2024"
@XenoShaun just checked, it is, downloading as I type this! Thanks again ☺️
@AmplifyMJ Hope you and your daughter get to re-enjoy this great game
I just come to say that Disney Illusion Island was a very dissapointing platforming and metroidvania game for me. I'd go for others much better and more interesting ones.
I mean, unless you're a kid or you're planning to play with them. Too easy and simple.
Is Bowser’s Fury worth £33 on its own? I already played through the entirety of 3D World on the WiiU. It’s fantastic but I don’t have the time or inclination to do it again (backlog is waaay to big to be doing that right now), but I would like that Bowser content.
@Ogbert I'd say, no, it's not worth it at that price, although I did enjoy it back then and am actually hoping for 3D Mario moving in this direction. Caveat is that it runs at 30fps in handheld mode and 60fps docked.
Worth mentioning is that the Switch port of SM3DW increases movement speed, so it plays somewhat differently. I prefer the Wii U version.
@Ogbert my brother and I had already played the original game on Wii U as well. Got Bowser's Fury and never touched the port part of the package. It's short on it's own, but it was one of my favorite gaming experiences of its launch year. And I think we paid full price. I recommend it, but it depends on how much you value time for your dollar.
@the_beaver I was going to recommend Disney Illusion Island. The first boss was just so creative and a joy to play. We haven’t finished it yet, but I agree with NL’s review and score (9/10).
However, you are not wrong. It is on the easier side and it is a great game for kids and families.
Get it in the sale or buy a physical copy (that you can resell when you are finished).
Finally got Just shapes and beats for which I've been waiting for a discount for ages.
It's absolutely awesome but I could not get myself to buy it for more than 10. That's done.
Got Downwell from this sale, probably picking up Rogue Legacy 2 and The Messenger as well. Nintendo Life + Deku Deals make me feel like I'm getting quite the bang for my buck, but the library is filling up quickly so I end up spending more than I planned anyway. Oh well. Now to find the time!
Ghost Trick 10/10 is not on the list, but also on sale.
Is Skyward Sword worth it even without the amiibo? How frustrating does the lack of fast travel get?
@Ogbert It will depend on you, personally I enjoyed it so much despite its short length for it alone to be worth my purchase of this version slightly discounted at launch similar to @Zaruboggan , but do keep in mind the fair points @Qwiff made, too.
I'd like to add that if you ever feel like replaying the 3D World part they added online play and a photo mode, also available in Bowser's Fury, where you can use the stamps which where originally for Miiverse.
@GrowingWings Your mileage may vary, but I didn't have the amiibo at the time and didn't have any issues without that feature as the original ways to go back to the sky were more than enough for me.
@Qwiff @Zaruboggan @JohnnyMind Thanks for the feedback! Online play and Photo Mode are good additions but not ones I’ll personally use. The increased movement speed is an odd one, I didn’t find the original slow in any way.
I sounds BF isn’t a huge addition but it’s a quality one, which is the most important thing, and it is giving me FOMO! But I think I’m going to hold out a little longer. Hopefully there will be another sale like this next year at which point if it’s this price or lower again I’ll be sure to pick it up!
@Ogbert I didn't want to sound too negative with my first comment, but the increase in movement speed in SM3DW has a noticeable effect on gameplay. As the level layouts are left untouched, the faster movement results in a tendency to overshoot jumps. Maybe the change is related to online play, who knows? If you ask me, the original plays much better.
