Topic: Why all the hate for Majora's Mask?

I found it to be a very good game. A lot of people don't like it because of the time system, but the flow of time can be slowed down, by playing the song of time backwards. Why do so many people not like it?

No idea, never heard of anyone hating it, it is an outstanding game. It is simply more complex than OOT. It would be great to have games of that quality level for Wii.

A few may not like it, but the game has a whole lot of fans. You'll find that many members on this site rate the game more highly than Ocarina of Time; Chicken even has it in his "Top 10 games" list.

I think the people that hated it perhaps did not fully understand it. I know when I first started playing I was like.... what the hell? I've got 3 hours to do what?? It is quite a complex game, especially some of the side quests. But once I'd adjusted to it I found myself loving the whole time element and would probably rate it higher than OoT (just!). Different strokes for different folks i guess

What's this bit for again?

I don't hate it, but as a kid playing the game on my N64, I was confused because truly Majora's Mask was my first Zelda but the first Zelda game I could actually (almost) finish are Zelda: Oracle of Ages (GBC) and of course Twilight Princess on the Wii.

Ren

Sadly I never even tried it and I've been waiting for big chunk of free time to try it. Oot really blew me away, and somehow I didn't get to Mask. Later I did see people whining about MM and was kinda worried that it was a dud, so I kinda didn't want to ruin my experience that every Zelda games has been so great. I was afraid it might be that it actually looked so similar to Oot, that there wasn't much new about it; which really is ok, if its a good adventure. Sounds like I need to Download it.
I haven't tried playing a "must save" game from a SD card yet, does it work like that or do I need to have it on my menu?

MM is great game but it takes a while to get into it.

It' far from a dud, it's a masterpiece. I imagine the complaints came from those who jumped into the first dungeon on Day 1 and ran out of time, having not shared in the scarecrow's wisdom. I love the time dynamic, being at a certain place, at a specific time previously recorded in the Bombers Notebook. Mastering time and using it to get all the masks was some of the best fun I've ever had in a game, period.

Not enough dungeons though.

The only complaining I have seen about the game was to do with the bugs in the Gamecube version that caused it to crash and people were worried about if this would be a issue for the VC version, having not played the game (still need to complete OOT) I couldn't say whether this issue has been resolved or not, but I think it has.

@Stevie: It has been fixed, no glitches or sound and framerate issues whatsoever. Which was a huge relief having struggled through the GC port, all the time wondering why they had done such a horrible job of porting such a beautiful game.

Come on, Phoenix. I think the point is (for people like me) I actually want to hear what the problem was for people that didn't like it. It sounds like I could get into it, but for those that didn't what was so disappointing? I don't mind a little hate if it clears things up, even if some of it is not a problem for others. Sounds like the timestuff just got annoying for some people, but presented a cool challenge for others.

You know I have never heard anyone hate on it b4. So I do not know.

i'm most definitely not a fan of MM at all. i abhored that game.
A) i like to take my time and thoroughly explore the game worlds.
B which is connected to A) i HATE time limits in games, unless it's for a short segment (say, some kind of escape, like in metroid) and it just feels like a cheap way to increase playtime. and even with time slowed which it is annoying that you have to actually play the song all the frickin time, it's way too fast.
C)the world wasn't as captivating as OT
D) the mask system was SO cool, but everything else ruins it...
E) you have to give up half of your items every time the day starts over. WTF?!

anyway... this game is definitely in my list of top ten worst games of the N64 era, if only because all other Zelda's are the epitome of awesome and this totally slapped them all in the face.

OMG how difficult is it to play the Song of Time, once, at the start of every three-day cycle? I like to take my time too, and would leisurely complete a dungeon in two days, then have a whole day mooching about doing stuff, then with a couple of hours till moonfall, head to the bank, and get prepped for the next cycle. When that next cycle begins, jump down the first hole you find (which are everywhere) and you can refill your items before heading off. I don't know what you are talking about. What horrible reasoning to dismiss such a brilliant game.

All right, I'll post my reasons and then get the Niflheim outta Dodge (like Machu suggested) and allow you to rip them apart as you see fit. Fair enough?

Time limit: Sorry, it irks me. Do they give you enough time? Yes, but have you ever thought that some people just chaffe under any kind of time limit? I'm one of those people, and to have a time limit on me the entire game frustrated me.
Opening: The single most boring intro I have ever played in my life, and I play JRPGs for a living. So many times I've just shut the game off before even getting anywhere.
Gameplay: There have been few games that have frustrated me more with the vagueness of objectives, and if you drop all those NES games, Majora's Mask is the single most frustrating game I've ever played. I don't enjoy hand-holding, but when you're dropped in an area without a clue as to what the fudge you're supposed to be doing, I can't stand it. Hours upon hours of pointless wandering spent in this game, not having fun, not enjoying a single minute. Also, it's way too light in the dungeon department, which is my favorite part of Zelda games. Some of the mask transformations are cool, but since you're stuck with Deku for like 1/3 of the game, it gets offset.
Story: This game always gets trumpeted as having the best Zelda story. Why? There's like a paragraph of story in the beginning that doesn't explain really a flippin' thing. It has more sidestories, yes, but the main story itself is one underdeveloped paragraph and a villian with no backstory or motivation at all, besides being a ****.

Now have at it, fellas.

The only thing that bothers me about MM is when i beat the Snowhead temple, the snow is gone and the Montain Village is beautiful, but when we go back in time, that place is covered with snow again. One of the things i like in Zelda games is just walk through the levels again just to see the sceneries, but it's a pain to beat the Snowhead Temple every time i want to see that place without snow.

@PhoenixRage

Time Limit - If you play the Song of Time backwards when you start, the 3-day cycle will in fact last for about 3 hours of gameplay. I don't think it's a good idea to sit for longer than that continuously anyhow, plus you're ignoring all the tremendous gameplay innovations that time brings, like creating a world that actually seems alive, and characters that follow different paths and interactions across the course of the days, instead of just waiting around for you to talk to them.

Opening - Objectively wrong. My awesome-meter says that Majora's Mask's intro was at least a couple thousand times better than the one for Ocarina of Time. In fact, I'd nominate the opening for OoT as one of the worst in gaming history; ridiculously awful legend-like text with far too many "dosts" and "thous," almost turning me off from going any further every time I've started it. "Dost thou sense it? The horrible writing descending upon this realm."

Gameplay - Different strokes. This game is about learning the town, the world, its people, and the various occurrences that happen within that framework. If you do this, you'll also quickly stumble on the various things you need in order to progress to the next dungeon, etc.

Story - Once again, the story in OoT is pretty terrible if you ask me, and a pain to sit through during any of the main sequences. Here, they realized that some corny legend doesn't do much for anyone with half a brain, and instead chose to unfold the "story" part of the game simply as a web of various characters and their lives within the game world. Much more enjoyable.

@HiroshiYamauchi: It takes about five minutes to get to Snowhead, jump in the dungeon, step on the pad, kill the boss, then you have three whole days to explore 'the changed world'. I don't get what you are complaining about.

@Pheonix: There is no hope for you. The fact that you think the Deku chapter is 1/3rd of the game shows you probably haven't even finished it. And as for being dumped in an area with no clue what to do, that sounds like every Zelda to me, you just need to know who to talk to. Ug, I'm not gonna bother, you've wound me up, just wait till Chicken gets here. Grrr.
