Also, there's a big gameplay bonus when you collect all the Chaos Emeralds. After you do so, collect at least 50 rings during a stage and press 1.
Just to warn that this "gameplay bonus" isn't available in the first sonic game, for those who don't know about it.
Only my first paragraph was referring to the classic games. That quote is from my second paragraph, which was referring to problems he had with this game, Sonic 4. The fact that it says "press 1" should've also made that clear. Everything I've read about this game (including the Sonic 4: Episode 1 instructions themselves) indicate that the "gameplay bonus" in question exists in this episode by itself.
I was amused that after 15 years of the "gameplay bonus" being usable in the final boss fight and the final boss fight only, when Sonic 4 comes along, bosses are the only place it can't be used (given there aren't enough rings to collect)
Finally got around to downloading Sonic 4, and maybe I am just being very forgiving, but I actually kind of like it. Sure the music isn't the best (I liked Splash Hill Zone: Act 3, though), and the physics seem weird, but I found things I did like. I think the homing attack is actually kind of nice, and the levels seem pretty well made. After playing tonight, it made me think about pre-ordering Sonic Colors just to get a bigger dose of our favorite blue hedgehog.

Having got the original in '91 and the sequel just after 'Sonic 2's day' in '92, I have to say I like Sonic 4 a lot.
This is one game where reviews were not really going to mean that much to me and my only main complaint at the moment is, I want some more levels... so bring on the second episode.
I love this game more and more every time I play it. The brilliance of the level design really starts to show itself after a few speedruns. I think this is going to end up being a very under-appreciated game.

It was destined to happen. It just had too much hype built up and when things didn't go exactly right, it gets shunned. Don't get me wrong, I'm disappointed that they failed to get the physics right, but I'm still gonna buy and I'll probably enjoy it for what it is, cuz being picky is boring.
i downloaded it and im glad i did.........i usually will not buy wii ware games but this one rocks......i enjoyed every level of this game ( even that awful torch puzzle that i almost didnt figure out)......i cant beilive how good it looks.....wii ware devlopers need to take a lesson from sega on how to make good games......i own all the sonic genesis games on virtual console and this one made a sweet edition to my collection.......if u dont own sonic 4 i would recomend goin out and gettin it .....(virtual conoles is still better than wii ware but this game is a big big exception and makes wii ware look great keep up the work wii ware and sega)

But see, it's not that they "didn't get the physics right". I mean that's what I thought at first, but it's just one of those things that the more you play it, the less problematic it becomes. Now it just feels totally natural. I think at this point, some critics just hate Sonic, and they want to hate Sonic.

Except it was supposed to play like the older games and they missed out on that one critical area. Those used to the older mechanics will find that they have a lot to get used to now, when they went in expecting a familiar experience. They messed up. I can understand that, and I can accept it. But IMO, now it just means that you have to fess up and except that this is a new game, and should be treated as such, which is basicaly what you're saying.
I agree with Kid_A, the game gets more addictive the more you play it. I'm still trying to get all ma chaos emeralds before I take down the final boss. Needs more levels though, can't wait for Ep. 2!!!
I played the demo on PSN the other day and my vary first impression was that... it wasn't vary good. But then I kept going back to the demo a number of times and now I really enjoy it, and will probably buy it (eventually).
It really is just a matter of getting used to the new controls/physics. They may not be completely accurate (I wasn't expecting them to be anyways) but atleast there not as F'd up as the physics in Sonic Rush.
I'm also with Kid_A, as you work on the speed runs the cool level design really starts to become apparant.
I'd add that Sonic 2 altered the physics of the first game in a way I never really liked. You can only run so fast in Sonic 1 while holding right, the only way to build up very high speed is to roll. In Sonic 2 your running speed just keeps increasing until you vanish off the screen, so we got Chemical Plant instead of Marble Zone. It created a 'dash-stop' type mechanic to the gameplay which continues into the rush series. For me Sonic 4 plays more like the first one in its consistent pacing.
