I was thinking about getting this one. So with all the mixed reviews here.......do you guys recommend it as a buy $15 seems a little much, same price as world of goo, which would be an insta-buy, if i had not played it on the pc already. So do you guys rec this sonic 4 or should i take my points elsewhere ??
Well I ended up finishing the game last, and overall I'm a wee' bit dissapointed yet not that suprised. Mind you, this is coming from someone who isn't exactly a big fan of Sonic. Yet back in the day I kind of felt differently....I remember finishing the first Sonic back on the Genesis and owning the 2nd, then came the Dreamcast and I finished both Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 and I had a decent time during the levels with both Sonic and Shadow. But after that I just didn't care about the franchise anymore as it sunk lower and lower into mediocrity, then the mediocrity turned into garbage.
as for Sonic 4 it doesn't have one ounce of originality in it's bones, calling it Sonic 4 is completely missleading as it's basically just a glossy rehash mix mash of Sonic 1 and 2 with some neat effects here and there along with the ability to do a homing attack which actually does make the game a bit more fun to play. Yet what annoyed me from the start was that everything looked as if it were too zoomed in and close. I guess this is what people were complaining about when playing Sonic 4 on an SDTV....It's a bit akward at first, and some of the boss battles are hampered because of this aside from the actual stages. Plain and simple, the camera should of been zoomed out a bit more so you could actually get an idea what's in front or behind you instead of taking too many chances and getting yourself hit and killed.
Anyways, I can't exactly say I had that much fun or really 'any' fun at all with this one. As I was playing, I just didn't really care what I was doing or what I was seeing. The homing attack felt satisfying to use, and some of the blazing fast moments were pretty cool. But the entire experience reminded me why I can't stand Sonic in the first place. If anything the final Boss battle was enjoyable and it was pretty challenging! But Overall Sonic 4 for me ranged from mediocre to decent....I bet if I played this on a Widescreen TV i wouldn't of been so hard on it...Then again.lol
All in all, this was a lazy unimaginitive and unorigial 'sequal'/Return for Sonic. Sonic fans will notice that right off the bat, but they'll still most likely have a great time with the game, especially if you have widesreen! As for me, I wish I could of tried out a demo....Because knowing that I wasted $15 annoys the hell out of me, ah well at least I can say I played and finished it. And I won't be bothering with Episode 2, big suprise!
6/10
As far as I understand, playing on a widescreen TV won't make the game widescreen. You still get black bars on the left and right sides of the screen. It only provides about an extra inch on each side that doesn't show up on a 4:3 TV, so it doesn't really help you see what's coming. It just lets Sonic remain on screen at all times during the first boss battle.
While the physics changes are somewhat disappointing, this is still a good game that I would recommend getting.
Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.
