maybe its nit picky, but the physics and controls in the original sonics felt novel and unique. if the developers were going to make a deliberate decision to change them, it should have been with something that felt equally new and fun, not a system that can't help but draw attention to how different and strange by comparison it feels.

So, I've played the first two zones on my boyfriend's PS3.

Not a fan of the physics. Sonic's supposed to be a little bit slippery, but I never found him difficult to control in the originals. I've also had some cheap deaths from trying to home from to far away (spoiled by the Adventure games, I guess). I guess it's ok once you get used to it. I just go on muscle memory since I've played so much Sonic, so I just need to retrain myself as I make tough jumps, since the methods to clearing them are different.

The music is fine, but it gets annoying after a while. The originals were more inspired, but it'll do.

I LOVE THAT YOU CAN REPLAY LEVELS AFTER YOU BEAT THEM TO GET THE EMERALDS! THIS is the biggest improvement this game makes in the series. Especially since the special stages can be kinda hard. It's nice to not have to replay the game over and over and over just because you can't get that last emerald.

My verdict: No Amy Rose? God this game is sexist. 2/5

Nothing new there.
You can do that in Sonic 3

Really? I love NeverChris. I don't always agree with his opinions, but I think he does an exceptional job of articulating how he arrived at them. He's one of the very, very few video game reviewers on youtube that doesn't just throw up his hands and say, "This game is like poop coming out of a donkey's butt!" (That example is significantly less-profane than it would be in reality, as this is a family site. )

But yeah, I didn't expect most people to agree with him (and the comments on that video reflect it) but I think he does an excellent job of making his points along the way, and that's all one can reasonably hope for from any review.

Got it, played it, enjoyed it. It's fun. If the nitpickers want to complain about the differences between it and the old titles, then whatever turns them on (vonseux, is the second half of that video seriously comparing the time it takes Sonic to cycle through his idle animation? That clearly affects gameplay). But whilst they're being angry and annoyed that Sega still hasn't re-released Sonic 1 in a way that's both 100% true to the original and at the same time 100% original, I'm actually enjoying myself rather than bawling on Sonic Retro and stabbing myself with sharp objects. So I guess I win.

As for the physics... they're different, yes. It had no negative impact on the gameplay for me, it takes like less than Splash Hill Zone Act 1 to get used to them (and for the record, I was playing Sonic 3 immediately before downloading this. I very much noticed the change), and there's little inherently wrong with them. Accurate to the originals? No. Does that matter? No.

The only real gripe I have is the obligatory surprise platformer section at the back end of every act with the obligatory suprise pit o' doom below it, which caught me out every time. They were a little cheap. But everything else is great.

@Raylax Navigating over pits of doom before the end-of-stage spinner was like obligatory in the older games. I have no problems with it.

I was mostly talking about how his voice is annoying and terrible more than caring about what he said in the review but ok.

I don't want to spoil anything for anyone who hasn't played it yet but Lost Labyrinth is far better than it had any right to be. Especially act 2 considering what old Sonic level that reminded me of.

I Know what he getting at, and the Game dosen't feel like a true Sequel to Sonic 3.

I only played the Demo on the 360, and I see alot things they did worng.
The Gameplay it noting alike other Sonic games on the Genesis, and I'm not talking about the Homing Attack.

Sonic can't stay in his ball when hes in the Air, He just opens up, in a way to say "Just Kill Me" and his Spin dash can save him for noting, there no real speed in there.

The Last Game game I played that had Sonic in it and Plays alot more like a "Sonic game", was SSBB, and that just Sad.

The Sonic 4 really felt like a "New Sonic The Hedghog" to those "New Super Mario bros." games.

Holy crap, that looks awesome. A lot better then Sonic 4 anyways.

I bought it, and I'm disappointed. It's my first Sonic game and feel like it's a bit of a letdown. It's really short (bought it yesterday and already I'm at the final boss (granted, got none of the special levels so there is still some things left for me to do). The controls aren't tight and sometimes unresponsive. The bad physics really bothered me and make a lot of things frustrating. I don't like the cheap deaths, the large bottomless pits and some levels are really frustrating to play. Furthermore, I don't understand what exactly to do? Just reach the end of the level, gather as many rings as possible, destroy as many enemies?

It's no really a bad game, but I wouldn't give it the high marks it has been getting. A seven is as far as I would go at the moment.

Well I've played and beaten the Wiiware version and I think it's a pretty good game. The physics do feel different from the Genesis ones, but they're not that bad (the not being able to do a spin dash off a ledge is kinda lame though). The graphics look pretty good for a Wiiware game. Can't say I'm too impressed with the music though. It does fit the game well and the fact that it uses the drum samples from the first two Sonic games is awesome, but it doesn't sound as memorable or catchy as the older ones. It is a little on the short side but the fact that it includes a time attack mode helps with the replayability. It may not be a Genesis quality Sonic title (I honestly didn't expect it to be) but it's still good. Overall, I'd give it an 8.5/10.

This is my first sonic game too; well sort of. I've tried one of the Dreamcast games and I have Sonic for Game Gear. For some reason I never got into these two games or any other Sonic game (I always just attributed this to being a nes/snes kid), but I jumped on the bandwagon and downloaded this anyway. After playing for about a half hour I really started to enjoy it. Maybe it's because I never played any of the Genesis games so I have no frame of reference, but I really love this game. The only problem I have with it is how easy it is to get lives (I've collected ~300).

??? Donkey Kong Country had bad controls? What? That's news to me. I don't think I ever had a death that could ever be attributed to the controls preventing me from preventing it.

Well, don't give up on 2D Sonic. You should try the original Genesis games, since, as we've been saying, the physics have changed quite a bit.

By the way, the objective is just to get to the end of the level (except for boss acts) like most 2D platformers. The rings are there to act as lifepoints. You die only if you get hit when you have zero rings. Also, there's a big gameplay bonus when you collect all the Chaos Emeralds. After you do so, collect at least 50 rings during a stage and press 1.

word. don't take sonic 4 as anywhere near a representation of the original sonic games. If u haven't played any at all, I'd recommend Sonic 2. It's a bit more polished than it's predecessor. Tho u can't really go wrong with any of the first 4 games (including sonic & knuckles)

Look how impressive this 3D remake of Sonic is... and the character moves properly!

That isn't a remake. It's pre-rendered animation built over a video capture of gameplay from Sonic & Knuckles. Not much of an achievement in gaming there, just 3D animation.
