People are complaining left and right about how they screwed up the mechanics, but honestly, WHO CARES? Mario Galaxy had MUCH different feel than SM64, yet everyone loves it. People will go to such great lengths just to criticize one game.
Mario Galaxy has heaven superior controls than 64
I honestly can't tell the difference, except I can actually move the camera where and when I want it to in Super Mario 64.
After playing through the first 2 zones last night, I'm a little disappointed. In a few things. You've heard a lot of them before.
First off, I'm gonna have to jump on the physics bashing bandwagon. It's not so much that it feels different than the original Sonic games (which it does, most definitely), but rather that it feels unnatural. Its the little things, like stopping in midair if you let go of the dpad. Now, this is not unlike the physics in the original Super Mario Bros. where you would hold the dpad for a longer jump and let go for a shorter one, but the implementation here is more drastic. Like you just come to a complete halt once you let go of a direction. I'm not gonna launch into a list of all the other little hang ups (you've heard em before, the uncurling when u launch off a ramp, not rolling down a hill unless you hold the dpad, etc.), but while each is kind of no big deal on their own, they compound to make some frustrating moments. Oh, and yeah, it's SLOW, and yeah, the running animation (which I didn't think would bug me) is weird and seems lazy.
Next up: the music. The music is... it's just bad. That's the best I can do without including a chain of curses. I'm a musician, I LOVE video game music, and the old Sonics had some of best, most classic tunes, no doubt. The music in Sonic 4 is bland and cheesy, and, for me, hard to listen to. For a lot of people, it probably won't matter, but I can barely stand it, and for my next play session, I will definitely be investigating whether or not there is an option to turn it OFF.
That brings me to my next point. It's not only the music which has lost it's magic, but also... well a lot. Visually, the signature and cutting edge style that Sonic brought to the table in the early 90's seems lost in translation. Moreover, the whole game reeks of a downloadable title. The text, the little scores that pop up over enemies, the stage select screen and menus, the big ugly gold rings that take you to the special stages, they all seem like something out of a Hudson WiiWare game.
one last gripe: I amassed over 20 lives in the 2nd zone without even trying. that's just ridiculous.
so, by now, it sounds like I hate the game. I don't. It's fun, the new lock-on mechanic is a welcome addition for me, there's a lot in the stages to miss the first time and come back to later, online leaderboards are nice. I've heard a lot of people say the game doesn't exactly deserve the Sonic 4 title, and I'd have to agree. With no new pickups, and levels/boss battles that are largely inspired by old material, the game feels more like a 16bit Sonic remix than a new Sonic game. However, you can't hate the game for the fanfare. Hearing the old Sega bootup sound (actually all the sound fx are dead on, which is awesome), and seeing the classic little 1up symbol at the end of a level, etc.
Overall, Sonic 4 is a commendable effort, but I think the pretty much across the board 8/10 ratings its received are a little generous. I don't regret owning it (thanks, zez!), but unless Episode 2 plans to bring something new to the table (like, I don't know, say Tails? Knuckles? The 2P verse mode from Sonic 2? A new powerup?), then count me out.
The problem is that Nintendo never claimed that Galaxy was a throwback to the classic that is Super Mario 64. And it didn't have to. Because Mario going from 2D to 3D never was a problem.
We all now about the 3D Sonic games, he didn't made that transition as well. For Sonic 4, they always claimed that they went back to the roots for this game. That this is the true 2D follow-up of Sonic & Knuckles. A game the fanbase of the older games can be proud off. And then they screw up the most important thing, the physics mechanics. I can understand why fans aren't happy, take a look at the video from a few posts back.
That being said, I've never played a Sonic game (Rush and the Golden Rings still need a playtrough), but I bought a Wii Points card and am ready this night to download the game.

Here's my 100% accurate non-biased review of the game I liek Sonic gamez so I waz happe when i saw Sonic 4 on Wiiare. It iz like Super Mario Brothers Wii, but the physics arn't as god aspecally da watere fysics becase their arn't none. But it is a Sonic gaem so it must b okayish. I give it a: 654332677.8907/1000000000 It iz okay-but-not-great-but-goodish-not-medicre-but-good-okayee-game

I'm glad I didn't get this one when it came out for WW. I tried the demo today, and absolutely HATED it. No offense to James, or anyone else who likes the game.

This actually seems reasonable. It seems what most people dislike about the review is the score he gave it. Which seems to actually represent the enjoyment, etc he got out of the game compared to his expected enjoyment, etc. It's like getting a high experimental error, except that low is bad in this case. I tend to agree with most of his complaints; I can't stand how far the camera is zoomed in, the physics feel completely unnatural and rough, the 3-D looks like it came from the SNES (I don't mind it that much; kind of nostalgic, but I can see how someone would find it cheap or whatever.
Sean Aaron ~ "The secret is out: I'm really an American cat-girl." Q: How many physicists does it take to change a light bulb? A: Two, one to hold the light bulb, the other to rotate the universe.
Personally, I don't mind the inertia and momemtum changes that much, and although the uncurling off ramps difference has the potential for cheap deaths, the ability to use the homing attack at least partially counters that added vurnerability. My only real problem is that Sonic now handles like a tank equipped with a rocket pack who starts out really slow and takes too long to accelerate. That's unacceptable for a character whose defining characteristic is his speed and didn't have those problems in Sonics 1-3 (& Knuckles).
Still, it's a very good revival, certainly better than any console Sonic game (not counting Super Smash Bros. Brawl or Sonic and Sega All-Star Racing) since Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. I give it a solid 7/10 that may rise to an 8/10 after I finish the last 2 (+ the final stage) Zones
Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.
It seems rather nit picky to whine about the physics so much espesily since they seem desinged around giving greater controll over Sonic's movement (Oh no Sonic stoped moving when I let go of the d-pad!).
That's basically how I see it, but that doesn't explain his starting speed nor acceleration (or lack thereof in both regards).
