No strategy to the combat? There is definitely more strategy to it than the combat in OoT.
AlttP is one of the best if not the greatest video game ever.

OoT and AlttP are two entirely different games, but with the same name (well, almost). If you haven't gotten it it by now, you haven't played far enough, if I remember, saving Zelda was hardly even close to a dungeon.

It seems pretty much everyone here who says they don't like LttP either played Ocarina first and expected the EXACT same experience or never even got halfway through the game.

The best strategy in the game: go up stairs and pause balls.

I sort of understand where DK is coming from. I've got the same situation except it's the original Legend of Zelda from LttP. I've tried several times to play it but I just can't get into it. Although the main reason is because it's non-linear. Actually I may have another crack at it tonight.

A few weeks ago I created a thread here asking for which Zelda game to start with and ended up getting A Link to the Past. While I haven't played Ocerina of Time, so I can't compare it like you do, I still find it to be quite fun and playable - though not to the extent where I sit hour after hour playing it. Still, I generally like 16-bit games better, so...

While there may not be much introduction or anything, some gamefaq on the net might be useful. I know it is a matter of religion almost to whether use gamefaqs or not to, but personally I do not mind looking at one every once in a while, instead of getting frustateling stuck at some point in the game.
But it is not an easy game whatsoever. I find myself dying alot, but it is never to much of a setback and you keep learning where you can do better next time.

If you don't find the game fun yet, I can't say anything. I am still pretty much at the beginning I guess, but already enjoying the game.

Who starts a thread about a game after having only played it for 10 minutes?

Apparently the author of this thread. And to the person who says the original Legend of Zelda on NES isn't linear is wrong. You go to the different dungeons in order.

DK_vs_KK

I'll play it some more this evening. Maybe I'll post a new thread about it in the future. I'll see if I have the same viewpoint about it after I get further into the game.

If you think New Super Mario Bros. Wii is hard, try Super Mario Bros. 3.

Yeah DK, you should give it a chance. Granted I grew up with the game, so I am definately biased towards it, but it really is one of the finest video games I've ever played. I kinda felt the same as you when I first played Secret of Mana. I just couldn't get into it at first. But I played through anyways, and grew to really like it. Not as much as LttP mind you, but I still enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

No, you're wrong. You can easily take the dungeons out of sequence. There is a suggested sequence, but it's not at all enforced. Some dungeons do have requirements to get in, but for example you could save dungeon one for last (excluding Ganon's dungeon of course) if you want. I have never done them in order, actually. I often skip 2 because I forget where it is, haha. I just beat them as I find them.

As far as I know, skipping 2 is the only exception. I have done that myself. But for the most part, you can't make it through a dungeon without getting an item from a previous dungeon. So I would say it's pretty much linear.

Edit: I suppose you are right about skipping the first dungeon as well. But I still say the game is pretty linear.

I'd play a Link to the Past before i'd play Ocarina any day. For me this is a classic and it ticks me off because it lives in Ocarina of Time's shadow and it shouldn't.You wanna know what i think, it's the best Zelda game.

@Brooks
Nah, you can skip at least half of them. There are also overworld items you can get out of order. And the second quest is even less linear, I think.

Whoever implied that A Link to the Past is a letdown was clearly let down him/herself.
It's not the best game ever, but it is one of the greatest adventure games of all time with a great sense of nonlinear direction.

Zelda: A Link to the Past was once the best SNES game, but that's more than 15 years ago.
Super Metroid the same.

Anyone who's not finding the genius in them is spoilt by newer games that copied their revolutionary ideas.

I'm glad I'm not one of the many "graphics whores" of today. I'm glad I can see the greatness of any past game, despite it's graphics or limitations. I find it quite easy to put myself in the past and see the graphics as good and the game as innovative. I bet many people on this site can do this also.

Graphics are important to me, and they're a big reason why I like this game. If someone likes Ocarina of Time and not this, I can't imagine how graphics come into play. Ocarina is one fugly game, easily the worst-looking Zelda to date.

I really don't give a crap about graphics as long as I can see whats going on, and if they look eye pleasing for it's time. Gameplay is easily the biggest factor in a game.

Adam

Of course game play is the most important. But like you said, they need to be eye pleasing, and Link to the Past is nothing but, regardless of the time.
