If they did end up making a third I wouldn't be very surprised! I really doubt they will as they probably are working with new ideas, but you never know.
If you think about it though, the first two SMB games in Japan were pretty much the same, the second one was just harder, but then came the third one and blew the others away! So don't be so pessimistic!

And we already got a rebrand (Kirby's Epic Yarn, different series, same concept), so hopefully you're right.
I don't think they should. As it is I was surprised we got a second one. Only the NES had 3 core Mario games other then the Wii. SNES, N64 and Gamecube only had 1. Right now I'm having a hard time imagining how they can push the Mario franchise to make another big leap forward like Mario 64 or the first Mario Galaxy. I just hope the next Mario game doesn't have the same controversy as Mario Sunshine where people think its more of a me too mario game.
^I'm not surprised. Not the first time they've done a direct sequel after all. Just the first time in a while. I do agree that something new would be preferred, though, preferable something that has a greater emphasis on exploration.
Epic Mickey has me pining for the days of Banjo-Tooie and Super Mario Sunshine, where the levels were large and explorable, but also perfectly built for platforming, and while the levels could be enjoyed on their own merits, they all managed to feel like they belonged in one flowing world. So while I loved the 2D-in-3D feel of the Galaxy games, my hope is that the next 3D Mario game is less linear.

I didn't care for sunshine! There wasn't really much platforming except for the levels with out the water pack (which were my favorites) every problem had the same solution: squirt it with water. It didn't really seem quite as polished as SMG or M64 and even the man Miyamato has said that 'Galaxy is the first worthy successor to Mario 64.'
I'm not trying to discount anyone else's opinions on that game, just stating how I feel about it. It's not an awful game, or anywhere near bad, it just didn't feel like a Mario game to me. It definitely lacked the "wow" factor that M64 and Galaxy (and even SMB & SMB3) had on a first play.

And that's why it's awesome. It's more focused on exploration and collecting than jumping around for no good reason.
Yes, thats why it was soo great, because it have less boring platformers and more awesomenes. It is actually my favourite mario game of all time, I want a sunshine 2 or a re-imagining.
@dings "even the man Miyamato has said that 'Galaxy is the first worthy successor to Mario 64."
That made my day! After years of fanboys putting down SMG, hearing Miyamoto himself saying SMG was the true worthy successor warms my heart. As for the rest of your post, it's nice to see another SMG fan that feels the same way I do.

Sorry, but what fanboys are "putting down" SMG? Sunshine has always been the black sheep that's divided fans. Galaxy was a critical darling and pretty much everyone loves it.

Yeah, and even though Miyamoto says things, don't mean you have to agree with him all the time. I personally love every aspect of Super Mario Sunshine.
@Kid_A Don't want to start an argument here. I was just refering to people who say SMS is so superior to SMG. Didn't mean any offense to people who are fans of that game. I call SMG fans, "fanboys" too, when there in a large group, not when I'm talking to one person.
The next 3D Mario shouldn't be SMG3, it should be a whole new game using the new feature of Nintendo's next console. Or it could be for the 3DS, and use the 3D for something. I'd love to see a new 3D Mario game on the 3DS.
@vonseux While Sunshine didn't do as well, the Gamecube had a much smaller install base than both the 64 and the Wii. Sunshine was the Gamecube's second best-selling game.
