No because they need to do something original. Galaxy was brilliant, and Galaxy 2 was brillianter (if that's a word.....), but they can't keep using the same idea. They need something new.
Also, Galaxy 2 was basically the pinicle of everything that has ever been done ever. Your not going to beat it by making a sequel. I actually think less of Galaxy now because of how amazing Galaxy 2 is (though Galaxy's still awesome as well). The only way to compete is to try something new. It doesn't need to dramatically change the gameplay or anything, just do something other than another "Galaxy."
"Oooh, yes I said it! I said it! I said it 'cause I caaan!" My Backloggery
Galaxy three would be welcome here, even on the wii, even if it is not THAT original. You know nintendo will do something original with the series anyways, with 3D and 2D games coming out for 3DS. Just a pipe dream, but what about a re-imagining of SMB3 done Galaxy style, then us fanboys would get the tanooki suit and boot done in 3D. Or call it SMUniverse, and do a re-imagining of all the games in the series in 3D. Think Galaxy's underwater levels but in a frog suit or a Galaxy Mario 2 level where you had to dig the sand up below you to get to the core of a planet!
It's hard to imagine where the 3D series could possibly go next, given the explosion of creativity found in the 2 Galaxy games, but I do think the next game will be something entirely different

and as a side note, maybe it was because it was a little more rare, but I always let player two use the tanooki suit and i took the hammer bros. suit. Tanooki suit is WAY overrated. It is simply the raccoon suit but with a old man monk attached. Throwing hammers like a hammer bros.-aint nothin' like it.
^Thats exactly what I was going to say! I'll just quote this then.

QUEEN OF SASS
It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!
Very unlikely considering half of the game industry was yelling "cash-in!" until SMG2 came out and that was only the first sequel. If so it would probably take form on the 3DS, partially so Nintendo can call it Super Mario Galaxy *3*D, but I'm not sure if I even see that selling ridiculously well. If Nintendo's smart, though, Mario's intergalactic travels are over on home consoles.
Also, in my personal opinion, that would be terrible considering SMG2 is just about perfect.
No I don't think so, we've had enough of the Galaxy series, and even if Nintendo made a new tile for the game, I don't think it's going to be better than Super Mario Galaxy 2.
Okay people we can stop quoting the same post now.
I also hope they don't make a third. I want the next 3D Mario to be on the next Nintendo console. I mean, I would buy if they did make one, but they should make something new on the new console.
I think the thing is, I don't want ANOTHER SMG. I want an all new Mario game not based on Galaxy, after Galaxy 2 the formula was wearing a little thin on me.
I agree; two SMGs is enough, a third would feel like overkill (even though it would still be good). I'd rather something different, or even just a mild variation the way Sunshine deviated from the basic SM64 concepts.
I don't even want to get Galaxy 2 because, to me, it still seems too much like the first one but with a couple of new features. One of those games that didn't even need a sequel in the first place...
SMG 2 is, for me, the greatest video game of all time and yes I HAVE extensively played most of the classics. SMG 3 would be most welcome...just like Super Mario Bros 3 was

Art direction and gameplay wise SMB 1 - 3 are just soo different from each other, especially 2. Which made all 3 of the experiences stand out from one another and they were all fresh and unique in their own way. So SMG1-3 for example wouldn't be a good comparison, considering SMG2's art direction and gameplay for the most part has remained the same compared to the first. Even though SMG2 is miles better hehe.
You make a great point there, even though it's the same series, they all felt different and fresh. Each ones had it's own distinct style while staying true to previous formula and each managed to improved upon that. If you look back at Mario's track record each game stands on it's own merits. Super Mario Brothers was vastly different from 2 and 3, and Super Mario World brought on a fresh take to the franchise as did Mario 64 and Sunshine. To me Galaxy 2 felt like Galaxy 1.5, and it didn't have enough originality to stand alone.
I didn't like the direct sequel approach and it didn't captivate like the previous installment. I hope they really flip it on it's head and bring back some of the old styling from SMB 3. I miss the Tanooki Suit, Frog Suit, and Hammer Bros. suit. As well as Dark Land.
Send me the best you've got. Send me your strongest machines. The fight my brother fought, here, now, will end with me.
Epic Mickey has me pining for the days of Banjo-Tooie and Super Mario Sunshine, where the levels were large and explorable, but also perfectly built for platforming, and while the levels could be enjoyed on their own merits, they all managed to feel like they belonged in one flowing world. So while I loved the 2D-in-3D feel of the Galaxy games, my hope is that the next 3D Mario game is less linear.
