I'm still new to the game as I just bought it yesterday but I was sort of hoping I could just use the Pro Controller (it's my favorite Wii U controller). Moving around the tablet to aim is sort of an annoying process to me but I may get used to it.

You can turn off the gyro, although I personally don't recommend it. Make sure to set the gyro sensitivity level to a value that feels good. Aiming with the gyro with small movements is the key IMO.
So far I've only played the first stage in Campaign mode. I played Turf Wars. The game is fun but my teams keep getting annihilated because we're all level 3 or so and someone on the other team was like level 20....I didn't even realize at first but trying to spawn where you need to paint is essential. The other team always has better weapons than me and I kind suck but still learning.
Overall, it's fun but I wish you could do more to customize your character. I haven't unlocked clothes yet but they still all have the same look. So far, the game is just OK to me. Worth picking up but I don't feel like it's up there with Mario Kart 8 or Smash Bros to where I really get into it. May be too early to tell.
@Rexcalibr: It's too early to tell. The stores for gear don't open until level 4. That's the basic starting point where you can starting tweak your gear and abilities. The Spattershot Jr. is available at some of the early levels, which is a weapon many high ranked players actually use.
Anyone else finding the Dynamo Roller, to be annoying? I understand that they are slow and take a long time to shoot, but it seems kind of cheap, how they have huge range and will always one shot you. It's really difficult to take one on without catching them by surprise or outnumbering them. It seems unfair.
@Rexcalibr: Splatoon definitely takes time getting used to, but when you do it's so rewarding!
Question, after a Turf War and they show how many points you got, do the points also basically tell you who is contributing most to the team based on who got the most points? Or do they just give you more points if you'r a low level? I turned off motion controls because I found them more annoying than helpful but would you say this is a disadvantage?
I am enjoying the game. At the same time it doesn't draw me in the same way Smash Bros or Mario Kart 8 does and I can't see my self being very invested in it once Mario Maker comes out but my opinion might change the more I play it.

@Rexcalibr: In Turf War the points next to each player describes how much turf you covered with ink. (You still get those points to level up and buy stuff even if your team lost.) Killing the most enemies doesn't really give you anything besides a bigger chance to cover the ground with ink.
I didn't like using the motion controls either at first, but now I think that using the motion controls is definitely a plus. The analogue aiming isn't that intuitive in comparison. Like @jariw mentioned, you should try and find the gyro sensitivity.level that you're comfortable with.
@Aromaiden: I hate more then one tbh. Of I have the distance and they put range me I send a seeker after them. Once they go into defense mode I hunt them down. Now if there's more then one I'm still screwed. In close quarters I usually have to settle for a mutual kill.
@Rexcalibr Imo you are at a huge disadvantage and will more times then not lose to the player using gyro controls. Keep practicing with it and it will pay off.

The points is square meters of turf according the the Prima guide. (And there's 300 bonus points for the winning team, as you've surely found out.) And the points equals money that you buy weapons and gear for.
The personal score in Turf War is depending on how balanced the matches are, weapons used, and the skill of the players. Uneven matches can result in players getting above 1,800 points. In even matches, players seem to average around 700-1,000 (not counting the winning bonus). Who's winning is mainly dependent on what happens during the last minute. Staying alive and painting during that last minute is worth a lot for the team. Some weapons can't paint as fast as other weapons, but they can be a huge factor in winning the match anyway when used well.
I personally feel that either control set-up can work fine, it's all down to preference. It may also depend on the weapons one prefers using. Gyro controls are near pointless for Rollers but almost a necessity for Chargers (and helpful for Splatling Guns).
EDIT: Oh, and points. I feel you get more from Shooters covering turf than you do for covering the same amount with Rollers.

I often misjudge the range of the Dynamo Roller, and think they will only reach as far as a carbon roller. But Dynamo Rollers is ink consuming, so 2 out-of-range splashes in a row usually makes it safe to approach a Dynamo Roller.
1) Do we have a definite number of confirmed stages still to be added, and do we know what any of them are other than Hammerhead Bridge?
2) Has it been stated whether or not we should expect an influx of new clothes to be added again at some point?
3) Do we have any idea whether or not a 4th ranked-mode will ever be added?

Eagerly anticipating: Zelda U and the hopeful announcements of Animal Crossing U and Paper Mario U.
Something interesting about Splatoon that I love about it, are its bands. I find Splatoon's bands to be pretty interesting and creative, and I really enjoy how distinct they are from each other. It's a shame we only get to see the Squid Sisters but it's always awesome to hear their music and see the designs given to the bands. I feel the bands are a nice touch.
So in case you didn't know, Splatoon has four bands at the moment.
The first and most known one being the Squid Sisters.
The second band is The Squid Squad. They are comprised of three Inklings and a sea urchin, and are basically the Punk band for the game.
The third band is The Hightide Era, and they are a piano rock band, and were introduced along with the fourth band in the August 6 update.
The last band is The Chirpy Chips. They are a chiptune band and their main singer is also a Sea Anemone similar to Annie
