Ya know it’s funny. Coming into this generation I cared so much about having physical copies of all these games on all these systems... and now... I just don’t care that much. It’s a mindset, it really is. And I think you just eventually reach a place of mental serenity where you realize the only thing that matters is that you have access to the games you actually care about,

Yeah it definitely is. But I've never managed to get out of it. I still need physical retail games, in the same way I need physical books rather than ebooks.

I prefer physical copies of games, but its not the end of the world if I don't have them for every major release I want.

The primary difference between ebooks and digital games is that your interaction with the game itself is identical no matter how you purchase it, whereas, in the case of physical books, you're actually reading something printed on paper, which is an experience impossible to replicate on a digital screen.

Also, with physical books, the entire book is there, complete, when you purchase it. You don't need to digitally download parts of your physical book before reading it.

I wanted a physical copy of FF7R, but, otherwise, I'm over physical games.

Currently Playing: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (NS2); Corpse Factory (PC)

Not fussed at all with physical games. Hundreds of digital games across playforms and only about a dozen physical switch games. Though books, as mentioned above, I gotta have the real think lol. I've tried many times to read books on my tablet/phone and it's just not the same. Funny how that works!

anyone here that used my switch friend code tell me, as I'm not sure who some of them are.

thanks.

I don't know. I still think a HUGE bonus of going physical is the ability to trade with friends and family and/or trade in when you're done with them. Sure, most games are worth under 10 bucks if you keep them for awhile, but there have been plenty of single-player games that I buy, 100% in under a month, and trade it in for like 50% or even close to 75% of its original price, which is insane.

I actually traded in an extra copy of Mario Odyssey (Amazon sent me 2 copies when I only ordered one ha) back in September and I got nearly 40 bucks for it in Gamestop credit. That's insanely awesome getting two thirds of the value back for a game once you're done with it. You can't do that at all with digital games unless you're super fast OR sneaky with manipulating Steam's refund policy.

@rallydefault amazon sent you 2 copies of a brand new game by accident, I never saw that before. must be a first.

@Ninfan my wife who every other day orders something from Amazon has at least three times been giving duplicate items. The first two times she contacted Amazon they told her just to keep the items. She's not wasting her time calling again. They were shocked anyone would admit this happened though.

@sixrings Ive had it happen to me plenty of times before, not just Amazon. A couple years ago I ordered a Google Home Mini, they ended up sending me 4!! Called them 3 different times trying to send them back and all 3 times they told me just to keep them all as it was more of a hassle than it was worth on their end apparently!

And, I 100% agree that is the one advantage it will always have, and the one I still respect, and will always respect. You can’t take that away from physical. I think a lot of the other “advantages” are overstated or deteriorated to the point they don’t even really exist anymore, but that... that is very true. The resell value is definitely a factor worth considering.

I mean heck, I wouldn’t have anything to sell if my PS4/X1 collection wasn’t physical! That said, I think the counter to this, at least for me going forward, is only buying the core games I actually care enough about to never want to sell in the first place, and stop triple/quadruple dipping across 4 different platforms because I have to have everything right now, especially in an environment where developers are so often paid for temporary exclusive rights, knowing full well the name will later release on my targeted platform of choice. Just stick to one copy on Switch or PC, digitally, except for the occasional game I want on both due to a large graphical disparity.

@Dezzy
I can relate. I still struggle with the mindset. It’s hard to let go when you’ve invested into it for so long. I think it’s easier to make a change during a generational transition, which is why I’ve decided to make a clean break on the next Nintendo system. Will finish off the Nintendo Switch shelf, but that will be the final chapter for me. Will have a nice DS/3DS/GC/Wii/Wii U/NSW display. And that’s enough. Maybe I’ll make some exceptions for a few collector editions of my favorite series, but that aside, it’s 100% digital next gen.

Steam has also helped to break that mindset.

The other thing with Steam is it's continual sales/ deals, @JaxonH .... So, you never have to buy any game on there at full price, either!

Yeah the reasons are quite different in the 2 cases, but because it's mostly just an irrational bias I have, it doesn't really matter to my brain that much what the reasons are. I just prefer physical things.

The one thing where it really does matter is being able to resell something on ebay. I've already resold FF7R on ebay. Got 90% of the original price back. Then I'll probably end up rebuying it in 2 years time before the next installment comes out, when it'll be like £10. Great cheap way of playing the biggest games.

I'm all for more Bamco games being released on Switch, but Jump Force is...just alright, not that great.

I would've much preferred Tekken 7 or Soulcalibur 6.

I honestly do not understand why you want to trade or let someone else borrow your games. Why bother with a hassle like that when they can just buy a copy of there own? If I bought a game, then it's mine alone and have no intention of ever selling or trading it. For family and friends, it's the same vise versa.

You serious? Growing up, you never traded games with your buds? Man, I did that all the time when I was little all the way up through college. I used to walk across the street and trade NES games with my friends: that's how I learned Kid Icarus was awesome and Jaws was terrible lol

In high school my one friend had all these PS2 games I didn't and vice-versa: we traded all the time. Was awesome. That's how I learned about FF Tactics.

Gaming was such a face-to-face social thing back in the day, and it rocked. Trading games. Going into arcades and bringing your quarters up to the Street Fighter machine to take on the winner (and probably losing lol). Now it's all online and sterile.

Well, I don't know that I'd call it an irrational bias to prefer physical games. As you point out, there are benefits to going physical. Especially on Switch, where you can save a lot of space when it comes to bigger games.

Only way I'll ever be divesting myself of my deluxe edition of FFVIIR is if the price goes crazy high (I sold my Fire Emblem Fates Special Edition for twice the amount I initially paid for it and was still able to keep that cool 3DS bag that came with it, lol) or if something equivalent releases on PS5.

In general, I'd say it makes the most sense to go with hard copies of Nintendo's games, since the things never really seem to devalue too much. Whereas the average AAA game can be purchased for peanuts within a year or two of release.

I actually have an extremely irrational bias toward physical games on 3DS and Wii U. To the point where I just passed on a Sega sale featuring a bunch of games I don't own for far less than you'd be able to purchase them physically now, just because I want hard copies of them. Hell, the 3DS Corpse Party went for $15 digitally not too long ago, and I passed on it in favor of that $50 physical edition that came with the figurines.

And the only digital Wii U games I own are:
A) The free game that I got alongside the Mario Kart 8 promotion
B) A handful of digital and VC releases that were either upgrades from Wii VC games I owned or games I bought with Club Nintendo points
C) Metroid Prime Trilogy and Super Mario Galaxy 2, when they went on sale for $10 each

I've even ignored Fatal Frame 5 to this day because of the lack of a physical edition in NA. I'm not paying full price for a digital Wii U game. I'm just not.

So, I definitely get an irrational bias toward physical games, even if it doesn't extend to my current systems.

Modern gaming allows me to play wherever and whenever I like, regardless of whether the shop/arcade is open or my mates are available.

After the recent eShop sale, I really get why digital is preferred for so many people. It's not much, but just not needing to swap game cards when I get the urge to switch games is really satisfying. Maybe if physical sales continue to drop, we can see more things like special editions with figurines or whatnot in order to incentivize physical sales in a mostly digital world. I like mixing it up, all just depends on the game for me.
