Platinum consistently cranks out top tier games from their A teams. Nier Automata, Bayonetta 2, Astral Chain, all of them high 80’s to low 90s on MC, and all regarded as some of the finest games of the generation.
Bloodstained is patched!
Just played it, and.... sure enough handheld mode looks great! Lag is gone! It looks and plays great now! I’m sure if you compared it side-by-side it still wouldn’t look as good as the other versions but what’s important is the resolution doesn’t look super low anymore. That’s far more important and distracting than detailed flourishes.
And it seems they’re not done yet. But at least, as of right now, the game is in a relatively high quality state and perfectly viable to play for any who were holding off (I myself was holding off, but it looks like it’s time to slot this into the lineup).
@JaxonH - thank you for those updates on the... er... updates.
Saint's Row 3 is in my top three or four (jury still out on final Witcher 3 ranking) Switch games, sunk 80 hours into it and never had an issue with performance. Keep promising myself another playthough - guess it'll be even better now!
I was really looking forward to Bloodstained, till the reviews came out. Maybe it's now time to get it.
I really like Astral Chain but let's be honest for a second. It's not only a genre in which maybe half a dozen games have ever done 2+ million sales (half of which being the original God of War trilogy), but its a new IP in that genre. It's a new IP that takes some weird and risky and to some people, off putting twists on the genre that are hard to wrap your head around. The camera also kinda sucks, and it has other issues, and the story is as mediocre and meaningless yet inexplicably focused on in the same way nearly every Platinum game does. So its not some flawless, undisputed masterpiece that a large audience is gonna go nuts over.
So all that considered, the game's doing fine. It seemingly did well enough, it got some good first week sales from what I remember. I think more people should play it, but when you have 800 games to pay attention to, many of which appeal to more people, I'm not shocked its not a massive hit. Like I loved Wonderful 101, but there is no reality where that would've been some mega hit, even ignoring the Wii U's lacking sales.
I certainly don't blame Nintendo fans, because again, this is just the norm. Like the fact that Nier: Automata did so well, is a miracle. It goes against any and all trends in gaming, and surpassed both other Platinum games' and the original by a gigantic amount. Compared to the original Bayonetta, which I remember being heavily marketed at launch, with like big tv commercials all over the place and everything, but got stuck at the 1 million ceiling, which is why Nintendo had to save that series in the first place. Don't forget.

When they released it in the state they did for Switch, it got slotted into the "maybe someday on massive Steam discount" list.
I do want to play it, but I'm sorry, I can't fully support a dev releasing a game in the state they did and scramble to fix it months later. They did eventually fix it, but that's why and where it's been slotted to for me. Other developers release unbroken games that I'd rather give my money for full priced games to and there's so many of them. Speak with your wallet, as they say.
And actually, I see it's on Gamepass, so I won't end up buying it all as I'll just give it a playthrough there.
@Cotillion
Don’t have to apologize to me- I don’t care what you do.
But personally, I see it like this- you don’t support a dev who releases a game in the state they did- and message is received. But once they fix it the message needs to be sent that yes, the game will sell when it’s in working order. Yes, put the work in and we are interested. Otherwise any message from lack of sales is lost. The stronger message is actually supporting it if and when it’s been adequately addressed. That definitely proves there were lost sales due to their actions, and that is the strongest message that can be sent. Not only that but if the game is fixed then you’re buying a quality product so you’re supporting something that’s actually good.
I support my own interests and games I like anyways, not developers. When I buy a game from them I’m not supporting them. I’m supporting my own interests with a game I want to play. If they make a product I’m interested in they get the benefit of that support. And frankly, life is too short to die on hills like that- if I’m going to forfeit an experience I desire, it’s gonna be for much stronger principles than a grudge against a release that needs to be patched.
It’s simple really, you release a crap game, no buy. Fix the game, and I’ll buy. Of course with Bloodstained, I was a Kickstarter backer.
@kkslider5552000
Pointing out a few flaws doesn’t explain anything though. Plenty of other games in the genre have had stories far worse, and yet did better. And no game is flawless, but judging by the fact the critical consensus is up there with Nier and Bayonetta, I’d argue it very much is a masterpiece (and by my own estimation as well). One of the finest games on the system, and not just in my opinion (though it is my opinion) but objective statistics on critical reception.
You do make a fair point about Bayonetta, and that’s definitely something to take account of. My concern is, I see new Platinum games IP release on other systems (Nier Automata) and it does several million sold (and I’m aware Nier existed beforehand but so few people played that game might as well have been a new IP), yet when Platinum releases an equally acclaimed new IP on Switch, it can’t even break 1 million sold. Comparatively speaking, I see far less interest within this fanbase for the unfamiliar than I do elsewhere, which I think kind of goes back to the old saying of “Nintendo fans only buy Nintendo games”, which is obviously not true (though in years past I do think it was more true than not).
There’s also the fact everyone ignored it. All the big Youtubers that review big games for multiple consoles, like ACG, simply didn’t touch it. Aside from Digital Foundry and one Impressions video from Arrekz Gaming it was basically just Nintendo YT who are preaching to the choir. Games like that need to pull in the people who also play on other consoles which means it needs exposure on those kinds of channels. And it got none. Despite how good it looked. And I know it looked good because (aside from my own deduction that it looked amazing) it caused a whole mob of PS fanboys to review bomb it, and literally every other comment on Arrekz channel was from people saying “what game is this? Oh my gosh this looks amazing!”.
At the very least, I’m seeing much more interest from the fanbase with regard to new games people have never played before this generation than I’ve ever seen, so the trajectory is in the right direction.
@JaxonH Well, we just have slightly differing views on that.
I agree about grudges though and I don't carry them. I just prioritize and will give full price to those deserving of it and there's so many I also buy games to support my own interests, and won't deny myself an experience so I'll just get it on sale or play it on Gamepass sometime now
Paying full price even now doesn't say they lost sales due to their negligence, as they're still getting the sales only later and that it's okay to release a game in that kind of state as long as they eventually fix it, even if it takes months.
That's definitely not in my best interest and won't support it by paying full price for it.
Astral Chain was a victim of its own release day IMO. Its aimed at the kind of gamers who buy games year round, so it would've sold much better if it wasn't released in competition with everything from Zelda to Ni No Kuni to Dragon Quest XI to Daemon Ex Machina. Delaying it out until February or March could have done wonders for it.
Like, I didn't expect it to sell crazy numbers, but I was expecting it to sell over a million. Which it may have, we only saw the top 20, but it doesn't seem likely right now.
As for Bayonetta, unfortunately the sexuality will never let it get bigger than it is now. Even my friends who enjoyed Astral Chain won't give Bayo a shot cause of it.
I swear, I was just reading on reddit the other day a bunch of comments from people saying “Blizzard’s just cashing in on Nintendo fans- you’re all a bunch of suckers, they’re gonna announce Overwatch 2 soon and there’s no way it’s coming to Switch”
(Because, ya know, the internet... Ground zero for immature console fanboy nonsense).
Yet here it is. Coming to Switch.
Psalms 22:16 (1,000 yrs before Christ)
They pierced My hands and feet
Isaiah 53:5 (700 yrs before Christ)
He was pierced for our transgressions
That is nice about Overwatch 2 coming to Switch. I wasn't expecting it.
It would have been REALLY cool if Diablo 4 came to Switch. Darn.
The WoW expansion looks awesome, though. As a fan of the game for all these years, the lore for the expac is just mind blowing. I was hoping for the chance for certain races to switch from horde to alliance and vice versa, but the covenants look cool.
October hit the wallet hard. If I'm including my voucher as part of my spendings for October, i tipped $150. Then November 1 happens and I drop another $20. Yikes... I need to get a grip.
Heh... Heh heh. You wanna know how to feel better about that?
Let me share how much I spent in September and October... $3500 MSRP (probably more like $3k after all my GCU discounts, vouchers, cc rewards, etc). Keep in mind- 2 Dragon Quest v2 Switch imports and a Switch Lite, an onslaught of not just a whole slew of games, but a slew of collector edition imports from Europe and Japan, with double dips for digital copies of the top games.
I usually do about $5k - 6k per year on gaming related items (games for Switch, PS4, X1, PC, and various collectibles (sounds like a lot but it’s actually less than 10% of income, and I really don’t have any other hobbies that cost money so this is pretty much all I spend each year on luxury or fun). But man... September and October were record setters. I spent more in those 2 months than I did all the other months of the year combined.
In comparison, November and December will be... let’s see... less than $500 ($125 each biweekly pay period). Which is good because Christmas = buy presents = need more extra cash.
Luigi’s Mansion 3 is really, really excellent. It’s been a long time coming, too. I remember rumors of this game back on Wii U, but it never materialized. It was a long wait but wow, was it worth it. There just isn’t anything else like this on the market, and this one is a huge step up from playing on 3DS. Visuals look really nice too. You can tell games are starting to look better as devs learn the hardware more intimately.
Also, it comes with an FAQ in the settings. What game does that? What game actually comes pre-built with answers to questions people will likely ask? I’ve never seen that, but I love it! And it’s all done with good humor. This game is just oozing with love and care.
@JaxonH you're a mad man, Jax.... a mad man lol. But that's good thing that you can dedicate your spare change to gaming. If I didn't have a family, I'd be spending alot more on gaming, for sure.
Then again, it's been such a packed year I'm kinda glad I cant buy anymore in the short term( I say that now, but give me a week 😉). I was going to grab re triple pack but i opted to go 1 digitally at a time, so I started off with re4. With that said, I think my only big buys for 2019 are the witcher 3 that I'll ask my wife to grab me for Xmas( or black Friday if price drops lower than walmarts $50), and assassins creed rebel collection. I'm tempted at a hat in time still, super luckys tail, Mario and sonic Olympics. I'm sure I'm forgetting about 1 or 2. I'll also be grabbing some eshop games since I got a decent amount of credit built up. But yea good for you dude, its nice you can do that.
Edit: oh yea, and lm3 is amazing. Only 2.5 hours in but loving every bit.
November being quieter helps in other ways too like getting a bigger microSD card, generally some very good sales in November. Wanting lots of eshop games means nothing if you don't have the space to download it.
