I just got my Disgaea 4 SE, but I’m in NA. Also Atelier Ryza SE.
Gyro in RE5 and RE6 is huge. And it means they’re at least listening and recognizing it’s important on this platform (which... it definitely is).
Atelier Ryza Impressions
I’m really impressed with this game. It looks super slick on the handheld screen. It’s a huge leap from the previous games in the series on Switch. Almost feels like they built it ground up with the system in mind this time.
Just cleared Devil May Cry for the first time. I stocked up on those Devil Trigger stars before the final boss and essentially just powered through it without much trouble.
Once I process my thoughts I'll be sure to provide more detailed thoughts.
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
@Toy_Link Seriously? They better update the digital version.
I went a bit mad last night. I bought:
Hotline Miami
Superhot
Katana zero
Ace attorney trilogy
Metal slug
Pikuniku
Forager
Undertale
Jack box party pack 6
Invisigun reloaded
Castle crashers
Which was rather silly as I should have waited for a sale (a couple were in the sale. Metal slug, ace attorney trilogy and pikuniku) But I didnt need to get all of those other full price games in one go. I already have a backlog. They are all games I've been wanting, but I definitely wasted money by snapping them up full price. Oh well the developers will benefit I guess.
I just remembered, the Nintendo Q2 2019 (July to September) investor meeting is this week.
Looking forward to how the top-20 Switch best sellers list looks now. I'm confident Super Mario Maker 2 and Fire Emblem: Three Houses have kicked Mario Tennis Aces off the #10 spot of 2.75m.
Switch Physical Collection - 1,537 games (as of December 22nd, 2025)
Switch 2 Physical Collection - 4 games (as of December 8th, 2025)
@Magician I think Smash Ultimate will probably have beaten MK8 Deluxe as the #1 spot. Especially with the September Direct announcement that the Fighters Pass isn't the end of Smash Ultimate support.
EDIT: Turns out in reality MK8 Deluxe just extended its lead. I'm glad it hasn't slowed down, it reminds Nintendo that Wii U game sales are not representative of the games' potential rather that the Wii U itself reduced those games' potential. Hopefully 2020 sees more than just TMS.
How do saves work on the switch? I know you can save progress on the cloud if you buy the online service, but if you don't buy the service does everything save on the system memory/SD card?
@Ruthless4u Saves are always saved to the system memory and your only option for backup is the cloud saves which only applies to most games. If your Switch dies your Splatoon 2, Pokemon and Animal Crossing saves are gone forever (along with some 3rd party games) irrevelant of whether you subscribed to the online service.
@Magician I think Smash Ultimate will probably have beaten MK8 Deluxe as the #1 spot. Especially with the September Direct announcement that the Fighters Pass isn't the end of Smash Ultimate support.
I also completely disregarded Link's Awakening, which has sold more than 3m units thus far.
No doubt that'll be in the top-10 somewhere with FE:TH and SMM2.
Edit: Speaking of which, the top-20 list has been updated. Sales of Switch games as of September 30th are...
1. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe 19.01 million
2. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 15.71 million
3. Super Mario Odyssey 15.38 million
4. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 14.54 million
5. Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! 11.28 million
6. Splatoon 2 9.28 million
7. Super Mario Party 7.59 million
8. New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe 4.59 million
9. Super Mario Maker 2 3.93 million
10. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening 3.13 million
11. 1-2-Switch 3.01 million
12. Mario Tennis Aces 2.75 million
13. Kirby Star Allies 2.56 million
14. Fire Emblem: Three Houses 2.29 million
15. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze 2.25 million
16. Arms 2.1 million
17. Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle 2 million
18. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 1.73 million
19. Octopath Traveler 1.5 million
20. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker 1.18 million
Ports make the money, that much is clear. Unless you're Rockstar with GTA V, in which case you can slack off and not release a new game for five years, despite having at least one every single year from when you first started.
Nintendo fans just don't seem to care about smaller titles. Platinum games in particular are of little interest to the fanbase.
I think Astral Chain will hit a little over a million by the time this generation is over, but it should have done 2-3m. Idk why people ignore such awesome games. Nintendo provides a slammin lineup of some of the best games money can buy, and most people are like "meh". Bayonetta 2 didnt do that well, now Astral Chain... suddenly I have a feeling Bayonetta 3 will barely be a blip on most peoples' radars.
Oh well, I know I'll be playing the heck out of these games.
Fire Emblem is on the low end of what I was expecting. But it should still land somewhere between 3-4 million sold by the end of the generation, it it's done nearly 2.5 in just 90 days.
Saint's Row 3 just got updated!
New optional dynamic res mode to smooth out framerate drops (dynamic will drop the 1080p docked as low as 720p briefly when needed, and drop the 720p handheld as low as 480p briefly when needed).
Aim assist added in. Tons of bug fixes. And gyro is being added in next!
They just made Saint's Row 3 a seriously legit Switch release.
Do those numbers even include all the digital sales or not? If they don't, it's a skewed image of how the sales are. Some games sell much better digitally than others.
Also it makes sense Astral Chain doesn't break any records, since it's still basically a hack and slash, a genre in which (afaik) the games have never sold crazy amounts.
On a side note, I also don't care for hack and slash games, just to let you know.
I wouldn't say Nintendo fans don't care about smaller titles. Consider how much better indies are selling on Switch than on any other platform, for example. And ports of smaller third party games keep releasing on Switch for a reason: fans are actually buying them.
I think it's time people accept that Platinum is not some widely beloved developer. They have a cult following on the internet, but, aside from NieR: Automata, their games never seem to do really well. Maybe they should take the hint and stop developing pure character action games. shrug
Oh, and just to be ahead of the curve: I'm not expecting Metroid Prime 3 4 to sell gangbusters, either. I think it'll clear a million, but, beyond that, I'm not expecting much.
EDIT: Woops!
@Monkeido If it doesn't include digital, then I expect sales for a lot of these games are actually much higher. At least a million of Three Houses' sales are digital.
Digital is huge. If this doesn't include digital, then it's a pointless list. A lot of us have almost completely abandoned the cartridge format, but would still like our sales to 'count.'
Yes, digital is included as the numbers are internally being reported from Nintendo themselves.
And I wouldn't call Astral Chain hack n slash any more than I'd call Witcher 3 or Zelda a hack n slash. It has nuanced combat... much richer and deeper and more enjoyable than combat of other games. While hack n slash games are just mindless button mashers.
Not only that, Astral Chain has exploration, puzzle solving... it's a mixture of genres but it's more like The Witcher 3 than a hack n slash (and I know that's an odd comparison but, it's just to drive the point). Its an action adventure game with excellent, nuanced combat, puzzle solving and exploration elements.

@DarthNocturnal This is why I should time travel less. Scrambles my brain.
With that said, while MP4 might not be super profitable, like Xenoblade games (which somehow keep getting greenlit despite their lowish sales), I think they help add a needed diversity to the first-party software lineup.
