@rallydefault I honestly still don't get "games as services".....I'm not sure where the appeal comes in. Nothing about any of them makes me think "this is what I want to play." Then again I never really got Everquest back in the day either. I suppose I got out of PC just when that was beginning but now it's both PC and console and I still can't quite see the appeal....it seems like a system worked just to keep pulling you into a time waster without any real sense of progressing anywhere, either in personal player skill (MH), as a character (RPGs), or in a story, or adventure of locations (Uncharted, Odyssey)

As for the teams, that seems like a way to really have cheap development without really setting any new milestones or raising the bar, and milking the consumer to death. But Nintendo's DNA is always to reinvent the wheel. That's why Nintendo has a library of a dozen plus IPs valued more than all but anything Disney owns, and Rockstar has 2 successful games currently.

What would Smash as a "platform" look like? Year after year of, what, map packs and a roster you have to scroll 4 screens through? If I play the game this year, why would I want to come back to the same game with the same gameplay 4 years from now if all that's different is more backdrops of uneven platforms to jump between and some other fighters to mess with? Yeah it works for GTA, but I think we can all agree they're catering toward the lowest common denominator there Smash has to aim a little higher. To an audience that's mostly sober

@NEStalgia
It seems a large part of this is coming from different backgrounds: I was HUGE into Everquest and I'm still huge into WoW, DotA, Overwatch - all "services" that are added to rather than reinvented every few years.

But see, I would counter your last point of "What would Smash as a 'platform' look like" with a simple question: What do you expect Smash 5 to look like? Because I think it's gonna look a heck of a lot like Smash 4. And there's your answer. A Smash platform would look pretty much like Smash has looked since its inception. When you think about it, it's always been the same. They've just added characters and busy work like challenges and badges and whatever else.

You describe services in a way that makes them seem boring and repetitive, but when you step back, that's what most sequels do anyway even if they do come in a shiny new box. I mean, let's be honest: how different was Splatoon 2 from Splatoon? Did that really warrant an entirely new title? (Well, yes, in this case because new hardware, but just take the point.) And honestly, I never played Smash on the Wii, but I did on the Gamecube for hundreds of hours. And when I bought Smash for Wii U? Yea - pretty much the same thing that I was "coming back to" years later just on a new disc.

Or maybe you're just saying you like having content separated into different games? Like, even though all the Smash games play the same, you'd rather not have to scroll through all the levels and characters in one game - keep them on their own discs where they belong? I guess that could be annoying?

@StuTwo Activision have stopped doing last generation ports of Call of Duty. WWII definitely didn;t have a PS3/360 port and I don't think the game before that did either, unless that was the one that was nothing more than multiplayer and sold almost no copies. As for FIFA, well EA has always been known to support the previous generation for years after the next generation has come out, I will give you that.

But almost everyone has abandoned support for the systems in terms of developing games. Rockstar stopped really early on with the updating of the GTA V online multiplayer and I have a feeling Bungie did the same with Destiny. And those two have a big casual crowd, hence why GTA V continues to sell insane numbers month after month.

As for why Japan doesn't purchase home consoles anywhere near as much now is really due to their lifestyles. In Japan it is common to spend a significant amount of time on the move so for that reason, obviously a handheld makes perfect sense. But I also read that in Japan they rarely own more than one TV per household and therefore don't generally like to have it taken up with a console playing games. Not sure if that is true or not though, but I guess it makes sense considering how little time they spend at home.

With regards to Sony knowing that Microsoft was working on the Xbox One X, I actually think that any sources or knowledge about the system would have had them believe it was a next generation console rather than an upgrade.

The console market is so different to the PC market that I don't think you can just release upgraded versions of your systems every two or three years and hope people understand the reason the need to upgrade, especially as the majority of the casual market is not exactly clued up on things regarding gaming as a general rule of thumb as it is. How much can you really fracture a market with multiple consoles before it becomes too much of a headache to get your head around as a casual consumer, or a marketing department trying to push their latest games.

The whole idea of console gaming is to be simple. Adding multiple upgraded consoles into the generation does away with that simplicity of "This is the box. It will be the place you play all your games going forward for the next six or seven years without the need to worry about whether it will be able to run things in the future due without fear of it never being able to run games from this generation".

@FragRed I know that support for PS3 has slown and almost dried up now. The PS4 is 4 years old though and high profile dual releases were pretty common for the first 2 and not completely uncommon for many of the biggest selling games for 4.

Successful platforms have always endured for a surprisingly long time but I think this is a bit different.

Console gaming has become a lot more like PC gaming over the past 15 years. For better or worse the ‘simple box that’ll buy you in to the best way to experience big new ga. 6 or 7 years’ is a thing of the past. The challenge is to balance the power and flexibility demanded by the ‘hardcore’ with the simplicity required by the much larger audience.

I see Nintendo's share price is down over 5% after the hammering the Wall Street market took yesterday. It'll be interesting to see how the European market reacts today. Of course it's not just Nintendo affected, shares right across Asia are down.

What you guys think would it be possible if Nintendo decide to announce Wind Waker & Twilight Princess double package. Full price of either of the games would be just too much so I think that would be amazing idea.

SLIGEACH_EIRE

@Octane OK, thanks. Well it is interesting if you look at the Wii. The Wii had sold around the same as the Switch in the same time period but the Switch has well over double the amount of games. That's probably helped by the proliferation of Indie and smartphone games.

@SLIGEACH_EIRE Never mind, I deleted the comment because I decided I didn't want to comment on it in hindsight. But yes, digital games weren't a thing when the Wii launched. And Wii U is self explanatory.

@rallydefault So the short of it is you're an MMO addict That's its own whole class of thing right there (though even there, "platform" games aren't quite what an MMO would be.

Still, I think "platforms" aren't about extending the game. They're about monetizing the game. It's a cynical take on Nintendo's "evergreen" strategy. What would Smash or Kart look like as a "platform"? It's already a fantastic selling game that maintains long term full price sales, drives console sales, and is "complete" which is part of the appeal.

A "platform" usually involves discounting the game into the "toilet paper" category, the continuously selling add-ons for it that end up costing double the original game's price. It's all about the forward sales. But the problem is the game is never complete. Smash, kart, are what they are. They balance until the game is balanced over a period of time. There's a known quantity of content. Do we really want "MK8 Season 3" with 5 new tracks 8 new car parts (that are unnecessary don't help the game, but make something 'new' to have something 'new'?) new racers? But then what will make MK9 special? How will it differentiate? There's only so far you can push such a game. On the other platforms the next version just becomes "same but prettier graphics." But Nintendo doesn't do that. Each game has it's own identity of focus rather than a sprawl of feature creep. But similarly there needs to be no new Kart of Smash for a long time. What would the next one do?

Splatoon 2....well....it's commonly debated in the Splatoon world, but many see it as Splatoon Deluxe more than Splatoon 2 (I.E. a port like Mk8, Pokken DX etc). More extended, but not really a sequel. Their drip feed of Splatoon 1 weapons as though they're all new kind of solidified that.

@NEStalgia MK9 could be a collaboration between Nintendo and SEGA, call it Mario & Sonic All Stars Racing Extreme. Let Big the Cat become the new MKWii Funky Kong so that SEGA decides to make a new fishing game inspired by Sonic Adventure.

@IceClimbers Yes! I can't tell you how happy I am that I skipped picking up games like this and Wasteland when I had multiple opportunities to buy them. They'll be way more enjoyable on such a versatile ocnsole.

Currently Playing: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (NS2); Corpse Factory (PC)
