@Ryu_Niiyama No, I meant it's the poster boy example of a game that still holds up well today because of it's art style. It's the poster boy example mostly because of the backlash after the Space world demo.
Wind Waker holds up today. Twilight Princess does not.
@Hieronymus-E
Well, I guess I've been a "Nintendo fan" all my life and for all of their consoles as they came out. Honestly, I NEVER remember graphics being a super big "thing" for me or my friends. I find that, especially early with the NES, you were lucky just to own a video game console and be able to play games in your own home instead of having to go to an arcade (and use a million quarters lol). I mean, if you really want to talk graphics, you have to include arcades: arcades had the BEST graphics around for the longest time. But look where they are now. And even when more powerful stuff was out like Playstation, my friends and I would still play stuff like Mario Party even though a PS1 was sitting 3 feet away. Anyway...
Graphics being a thing that was worth getting upset over, in my opinion, only started when the internet became wide-spread. Yea, Nintendo and Sega went back and forth about bits and all that, but this...crazy "rage" over lack of graphics that I see (not around here, but other sites) is just... I think it's pretty exclusive to the internet age.
Just my experience. Maybe others grew up with friends who were like, "No WAY am I playing Mario 64, brosef: Metal Gear Solid's got better graphics. And because you like Nintendo, I hate you and wish horrible things on you and your family.
Oh, and hey, my mom said you can stay for dinner tonight."
@IceClimbers Ah thank you for clarifying your position.

@skywake Oh, I see what you mean. I guess I'm just applying a minimum standard to the equation. I highly doubt I'm going to get as many requests to play smash on single joy-cons.
@IceClimbers I personally think TP looks just fine. Though I guess "holding up to today's standards" means something a little different, but in my opinion, the original TP is a little more appealing than the original WW. The way twilight is protrayed with all of those oversaturated tones felt very unique to me.
Perhaps the difference is that it was praised for its realism in its time, but now that realism has surpassed it, it has held up in a more expressive way.
In fact, it's for this reason that I prefer the original Twilight Princess's art style to the HD version. The textures are better, perhaps, but the crisper image allows you to see all of the jagged edges from the low-vertex polygons, and appears less expressive.
I just like Twilight Princess for the audio and Midna. The visuals haven't really aged well but I still like other aspects more than most other Zeldas. Wind Waker beats it in all aspects but only because it goes for an entirely different tone.

Twilight Princess is fine. I like the HD version. If the graphics aren't good enough then Dolphin it for crying out loud. Too many people cry about its graphics and spoiled rotten regarding how its graphics have aged. Boo Hoo I say😢
The issue isn't the resolution the game is running at, it's more the art style. You can push Wind Waker or Metroid Prime through Dolphin and IMO they look less out of date than Twilight Princess HD running on the Wii U. The heavy brown and bloom of Twilight Princess has not aged well.

@skywake That's why I feel the increase in resolution is more of a detriment to Twilight Princess. There are rough lines in places I previously assumed were curves. Not only that, but I feel like the developers carelessly gave detail to the textures while failing to retain the original effect of the background in the cutscenes. It really gave it that thrown-together look. Perhaps these comparison shots on imgur highlight what I'm talking about; namely the headshots of Link and Ilia. There's a more intense color palette going on in both of them.
I guess my point is that if we're asking the question of whether something has aged well, look at the original rather than how its been updated. At least, in my opinion. The remake really didn't do it any favors.
Twilight Princess needed a remake, that's what I said when we heard about the rumours. Upressing the textures and adding some light effects wasn't going to cut it. And I agree that in ways, the original looks at least just as good.
But I also think the same about Wind Waker. I still don't understand their decision to do away with the cell shading in the remaster and opt for a more realistic lighting system. In ways, I prefer the original too. The only difference is that WWHD actually looked good, despite the change in art style, whilst TPHD was a bit disappointing IMO.
Twilight Princess HD was a lazy effort, a stopgap filler, fobbed off to a 3rd party. It could have been and deserved so much better. It's not bad but not what I was hoping for. It's still a great game, don't get me wrong.
It was one of the last major releases on Wii U so no surprises there. But even so I think it looks better on Wii U than on Wii, GC or dolphin. And Wind Waker in any form looks less dated.

Everyone hates on Twilight Princess. Yet its the most realistic style Zelda game we will ever get. I think the style and graphics are fine. Too much complaining on that game. I personally love it. Most people are just spoiled rotten when it comes to style and graphics on modern games.
Haterz gonna hate😈
I think the debate about graphics is at the same time very simple (they only need to be good enough to realise the artistic vision of the creators, good stylistic design will always trump 'realistic design' and that there are clearly diminishing returns) and at the same time a very complex one because it cuts to something deep within our culture that says realism is preferable, to be fetishised, that animation is primitive or juvenile - not something for adults to consume.
So there are deep questions about identity and society wrapped up statements like 'I can only play games in 4K and the graphics have to look realistic'.
To be fair it's not just something that plagues video games. Cinema has suffered the same several times. The artistry in some of Charlie Chaplin's films for instance was incredible. They were far more sophisticated in themes and execution than most of what has followed in the 'talkie' era and visually more clear and appealing than many modern films. More universal too. But they are deemed 'primitive'.
Oh well. In a world where the biggest games are; a simple 'football in cars' game that would've worked on the N64, a formless sandbox with blocky low res textures, an evolved mod of a decades old RTS, a walking tour simulator and pedometer with some simple monster polygon models and a cartoony skin overlaid over a game that is basically Team Fortress... maybe the wheel has already turned?
How dare you refer to Overwatch as that. Shame on you. OverWatch is way better and beyond that. You call it cartooney yet TF is cartooney. You seem upset at its success.
The point is that a game built around being "realistic" will always age quicker. Its just how it is. Twilight Princess is a good game with a good tone but it does look like a game from ten years ago. Something less true for Metroid Prime, Mario Galaxy and Wind Water.
