@MegaTen Interesting. The name wasn't ringing a bell. My last experience with Ys was a rental on the SNES. At the time it was WAAAY too complicated for me to understand. Might be interesting now though!

@MegaTen Haha, I didn't even realize Ys was an ARPG. I saw all those menus and stats back then and was like "huh?" and kind of let it off my radar ever since. I didn't realize what an RPG was (or that they existed) until Super Mario RPG came out (unless Zelda II and Castlevania II count...) of course, now I'm an RPG-aholic. I'd definitely pick it up on Switch!

@MegaTen Hope so. At this point, it's the only way I'm going to play the entire Trails of Cold Steel series.

@OorWullie They can be a mixed bag. I've tried a few generics that were kind of awful (they fell off easy during aggressive play), but among those one had this one cap that was hard-plastic rather than silicone with a coarse grip and it worked GREAT for Street Fighter. The stock grips were giving me "rug burn" on my thumb. Too grippy for frantic play. I've tried the PDP once...they were ok, better than the generic silicones, and a similar design to the Hori, but I did have issues during aggressive ARMS play of them falling off and sliding around. Otherwise they were really nice. I'm liking Hyperkin right now...pretty nice feeling and solid, but they're also unlicensed, so they're leaving a black "tire track" around the rotation radius on my yellow joycons. Short of that I really like them (they have a "tall" stick too that gives it a more full size feeling (that has pros and cons.) The Hori ones, when they come out could be great if they are a little better made than the PDP ones. And they're licensed unlike the Hyperkin ones.

I'll say, though that while I found the joycons perfectly comfortable stock (rug burn in fighting games aside), now that I'm used to it with the bigger caps it would be hard to go back It's not a slight against the joycons though, X360 made using custom caps popular, and the X1 Elite comes with a cap selection in the box, so it's the new normal

@NaviAndMii I've also tried using the single JoyCon configuration and totally agree with you. It's practically impossible to press the shoulder buttons as you can't individually feel them without the help of the wrist strap. The wrist strap was very helpful as my hands could finally easily fit with the controller too.

@OorWullie
I've got a whole BAG full of thumb grips now, and the only ones that work perfectly for me are the plastic caps from PDP. All the silicone ones are too slippery, but the plastic gives a perfect grip, and adds just a bit of height to extend the radial movement for better control. Unfortunately the only way to obtain them is to purchase the joycon grip dual pack which comes with 2 sets of grips (one colored of choice, one black) and 2 sets of thumb grips (one colored set of choice, one black set). I stick with black myself, and since I have five total sets of joy con plus another set for my spare Switch, and since you only get one black set of caps per purchase, I had to spend $105 to get black plastic thumb caps for all my Joycon, plus one extra set for the Splatoon joycons I'm importing. It's a lot of money but if you value the absolute best experience you can have it's money well spent (at least, for just a single pair of caps anyways, and you could use the colored ones also and get 2 sets for your $15, then sell the grips on eBay and make $5 back)

Blue/black (there is also red/black and yellow/black)

And these Surge Grips are a must for sideways Joycon (also comes in red, blue and yellow, and the colors are the exact matching color of the joycons, it's a perfect match FYI)

Hmm... I can't remember if I gave my 2 cents on split Joy-cons. Well, I've got big hands, so I sometimes get cramps from split joy-cons, especially when I need to use the "D pad," though usually only for more intense gameplay, like combat. Using a single joycon is also pretty difficult to do, but everything else is a piece of cake. The system is great at giving options; handheld mode works well, and the grip gives me all the comfort I need. So I'll probably only ever buy a pro controller when I need extra controllers for multiplayer, if I haven't bought a second set of joy-cons by then, and if a killer local-multiplayer game ever comes out for the dang thing (a lot of ifs). The Switch is really shaping up to be a "me" console. Meanwhile, the Wii U is still my go-to party system, as was made clear from this 4th-of-July get-together I went to.

@rallydefault Yeah, the Dreamcast controller on steroids. Not sure that's a compliment, but at least it was big!

OorWullie

Just had a good session of MK8D playing with the split Joy-con without the straps attached and that has to be one of the best and most comfortable control set ups ever. You can really feel the HD Rumble this way too,it feels amazing.

@OorWullie Yeah, split joycons are very comfortable to use. I never use the straps: without them, the joycons comfortably nestle into my hands.

I've never put the straps on my joy con, can't see the point in them and they'd just add hassle having to remove them for charging/handheld. But I've never tried horizontal joy con either, I should add. Nor have I used the grip. Handheld or split joy con is how I roll.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

Yeah, the split Joy-Con are perfectly comfortable without wrist-straps for most games - the only exception being when I tried the 'thumbs up' controller grip in the ARMS Testpunch - it's sensible to strap up as a) it makes the shoulder buttons a bit more prominent & b) it reduces the risk of accidentally chucking a Joy-Con at your TV!

I'd recommend sliding the wrist-straps on any time you're playing a game using a single/sideways Joy-Con though - I find them pretty awkward to use without (uncomfortable to hold & shoulder buttons too small) but the straps transform them in to really nice little controllers! ..not least because it makes the shoulder buttons considerably easier to use, but they also round the edges off and generally just fill the controller out really nicely - makes a huge difference!

Wow, a lot of split Joycon love in this thread. That's awesome. Glad to see people trying new things and liking it.

I also happen to love the thumbs up grip in Arms. It just feels so good! I couldn't imagine playing the game any other way. At first it was weird, and different, and I fumbled my moves and was slow to react. But boy oh boy am I glad I stuck with it. Because I finally broke through the wall I hit and just got a whole lot better really fast. It's so incredibly fun to play the game that way. Every day at work when there's about 10 or 15 minutes left before I leave I set up the switch in table top mode and remove the joy cons and play arms with full motion right there at my desk. Try doing that with the 3DS or Vita!
