@skywake that just isn't going to be a "cheap" console then. Most likely the portable system will be aroubd $200-$250 and add in the extra cost of a controller and the dock then you are looking at a pretty expensive system to be a companion device. Also I don't see people that aren't interested in portable consoles being interested in that. The handheld console can still be GamePad 2.0 for some people but there is a reason why Shield has a Console and a Portable, to address different markets. I wonder if there are any sales figures for those systems, that could be interesting

I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...
Those Xbox rumours are completely daft to me. Has any of the big three released a revision for their system only to then release the next iteration less than a year later? All I can think of is the Wii Mini, but that was so inconsequential it's barely worth mentioning.
And that's not even mentioning the stick thing and YET ANOTHER controller revision. Do Microsoft think everyone is as rich as Bill Gates or something? I know those are like extras and are inessential but still.
And Nintendo are the ones who get flak for releasing tat after tat after tat. Yeesh.
@TheLastLugia We will see how these releases play out. I just don't see this working out in Sony or Microsoft's favor. I think Nintendo could surprise everyone with the NX and steal a lot of the other two's customers. I could be wrong, we will see how this plays out.

The cost of such a dock would be neither here nor there. In this entirely hypothetical scenario the portable itself would have video out. A dock would be just to make it easier to plug in. You know those phone/tablet docks that usually do nothing but charge the thing and connect to speakers? Yeah, like that but with just a pass-through rather than active components. Not unlike this but with HDMI:
As for the controller and other costs? Well you'd also need a controller for a micro-console. So it's not really any different at all in that respect. The main difference in cost would be for the battery (~$10) and the screen (~$15). There'd be other R&D costs but I think most consumers would be willing to wear it for the device to also function as a full portable device. Because lets face it, the portable gaming market does pretty well. The micro-console market? They've tried (PSTV, Apple TV, Shield, Ouya) but nothing has really stuck. Not as a gaming device at least.
@skywake
"PSTV, Apple TV, Shield, Ouya" I just feel like none of these are really trying to go after the Micro Console market well. They are all half attempts to try to find this market. I think Nintendo's unique approach could actually see the Micro Console market do well.
Who would a portable you plug into your TV be for? Nintendo's audience is pretty small for such a device. First you have to sell people a portable, then sell them on the idea of plugging their portable into the TV. Not only that, but you lose the dual screen (since I bet they will continue with that concept) functions. It just seems really messy compared to having a device that enhances the two primary consoles.

I think Nintendo has it worse off because of their treatment of Wii U owners.
Explain?
EDIT: That might have been a bit rude. I am just getting tired of people acting like Nintendo owes them something for them buying a Wii U. I also find that most people that feel that way actually don't own a Wii U. A lot of Wii U owners feel satisfied with their purchases and don't have bad feelings towards Nintendo. They played what was released and got lots of great titles. The people I noticed that are most sour towards Nintendo are people that play a lot of 3rd Party, which is why getting 3rd party could help Nintendo out a lot.
@DefHalan Nah, even if dedicated gamers get pissed off at Sony and Microsoft for the PS4 Neo and Xbox One Scorpio, I don't see them jumping ship - they'll just stick with their vanilla PS4 or Xbox One. Then they'll wait until the next iteration after the Neo/Scorpio a couple years down the line (2019 or so).

I think these consoles are coming out around the time people start thinking about getting a second console. Not everyone gets multiple consoles, but I think a good amount do. The market is telling people they need a new console too, which will drive some sales. Nintendo is offering something new, the NX. (we don't know how new it is but it isn't just an updated Wii U) While Microsoft and Sony are only offering optional upgrades. They will most likely be claiming all games will work on both their new and old consoles, so there isn't much incentive to upgrade the system and if you are looking for a 2nd console, will you want the "new" system or an upgraded system? I think that plays out well for Nintendo, but like I said, we will see what happens. I could be wrong... it has happened once before lol

@DefHalan I think there's going to be significantly less people buying a secondary system this generation, particularly in the case of PS4 owners. Xbox One owners might buy a PS4 Neo, not caring about it "just being an upgrade" for Sony's exclusives.
Actually, in the case of PS4 owners, they might buy PS VR instead of a secondary console.
Basically unless Nintendo pulls some kind of miracle, I don't expect people to even consider picking up an NX as their secondary console let alone their primary one.
@DefHalan Basically about the Zelda situation and the 2nd half of this year. Zelda U was known to exist since January 2013 and yet it got delayed a ridiculous number of times, many of which were solely because of making an NX version. The 2nd half of this year is straight up abandonment, 1 game for that entire 6 month period is beyond pathetic. You could also go into the whole Sticker Star 2 debate but I won't go there.
@Grumblevolcano There is more than just 1 game in 6 months. There have been lots of games released and going to be released. Sure, people can be upset about the delay but it is still coming, it isn't being cancelled for the Wii U. I think Nintendo has stuck with the Wii U longer than most people thought they were going to in 2013.

That is a possible outcome. It really depends what everyone brings to the table. It will be interesting to see.

@IceClimbers I think miracle is hyperbole in this instance. Wait no scratch that it definitely is. Miracles don't happen twice, and Nintendo were more than written off before the Wii and look what happened. I know Nintendo are a weird one for many people and people get emotionally involved sometimes, but this whole attitude that's developed where people are thinking that Nintendo are going the way of Atari or something (never mind SEGA) and they are beyond the point of success or even doing simple things right is ludicrous to me.
They need to make a product (console) that people like, advertise it well and support it with great games. That to me is not 'miracle' tier for a company like Nintendo to achieve. Yet because they dropped the ball big time with the Wii U and made a couple of bad Metroid and Mario spin-off titled recently it is suddenly inconceivable to think that Nintendo know what they're doing.
Microsoft and Sony can do what they want to and do very well at it as they have (mostly) done these past couple of generations but Nintendo's successes are not dependant at all on the successes of them, as the Wii, DS and to a lesser extent but still undeniably the 3DS showcased quite well.
Make a good system, market it and have great games made and released on it for a good 4 years at least. Why is that a 'miracle'? I just don't get it.
Edit: oh yeah and reading back on the comments this whole 'Nintendo OWES us Wii U owners!!!!!" cheeses my onions too. You sound like a six year old whose big brother just knocked their ice cream out of their hand before they could take a bite and goes crying to mummy or daddy. I can't believe any is seriously expecting preferential treatment if they own(ed) a Wii U, because that would just be stupid, so it is literally just childish stamping of feet that doesn't get anyone anywhere.
It's miracle tier because people have to want Nintendo's product. What I was implying is that Nintendo's brand as far as home consoles go is extremely damaged, quite possibly beyond repair.
