@OorWullie
I'm not sure how you'd up the resolution of classic games.
Clearly you don't work at Square Enix, "Wow we can make Final Fantasy VI in HD! It looks so much more realistic and, therefore, better!". In other news I heard they've sacked their original graphic artists and hired the Spanish woman who improved that painting of Christ...

I know you were being a bit sarcastic but yeah, pretty much. That's the only way you can update the visuals of 8 and 16-bit era games. It requires basically redoing the entire thing which requires a fair amount of work. And the end result isn't necessarily better it's just different. Which kinda defeats the entire point of the Virtual Console.
It's like if someone came out and said they were going to release a remastered version of an album from the 50s or 60s. So they get a bunch of fancy modern equipment and a cover band....
@skywake I worded that badly.Just to be clear I definitely don't want them to redo the graphics.Everything the same as it was but in HD just like Mario Maker was.Sonic Mania's graphics looks fantastic but it's basically the exact same as the Megadrive versions but in HD with widescreen.Imagine how good games like Link to the Past,Donkey Kong Country,Super Metroid etc would like on the big screen given the Mario Maker treatment.I might be wrong but I don't see that being that much work.

The Final Fantasy V and VI steam/iOS releases are Abominations.
I think that we should now be at a point where we can appreciate the inherent artistry of the 8 & 16 bit pixel-art style. Like you say - just because we can offer ultra sharp HD graphics completely free from pixel-ation doesn't mean that it's an improvement. There's a myth narrative surrounding the industry that there is a single clear forward direction for video games (the film industry in particular has a similar myth) but it's nonsense. Great pixel graphics imply a lot in a very economical way - in many ways it's harder to make great pixel graphics than it is to make far smoother "HD" versions.
That's not to say that "HD" versions of old 2D games can't work. The Wonder Boy remake looks fantastic for instance and I wouldn't say no to Nintendo giving Super Metroid that type of treatment but it's not necessary.
@OorWullie I think it might be more work than you'd expect. Those games were planned to work in 4:3 - their level designs were built around that aspect ratio. In some cases things are hidden just off/on screen, enemies that are timed to appear only when the screen scrolls on to them etc. and changing the ratio would affect this. I'd guess that the flow and balance some games would be basically unaffected but others would need to be dramatically altered.
@OorWullie
As @StuTwo said, those games were built around the aspect ratio. When stuff goes off screen in some cases the limitations of the system itself meant that part of the image was overwritten. If you play SMB3 or Kirby's Adventure you'll literally see that on the side of the screen. Changing those games to work in a more modern aspect ratio isn't as simple as flicking a switch in the way the emulator displays the game. You'd have to re-write the game.
And for higher resolutions? Well that's simple enough. Pre-N64 games usually run at something approximating 240p. 240 x 3 = 720. Blow up those NES sprites to be 3x larger than they originally where and on the Switch you'll have perfect scaling. Those classic games will look as good as they possibly can without ruining the aesthetic.

So I've spent a few hours with my Switch and I'm really liking it. Only downloaded Fast RMX rather than Fast RMX and Blaster Master Zero because of tomorrow's Nintendo Direct. Don't want to risk there being something I want more downloadable straight after the Direct like Nintendo has been known to do plenty of times.
Welp, my Switch has extremely bad internet signal issues. Upon trying lots of troubleshooting, it seems sending the console to Nintendo for repair is the next stage.
@Grumblevolcano Before you do that it's not just your system. It would seem all the systems have this same issue. I sure hope it can be fixed in a update. My system sits next to my Wii U which has never had a problem with receiving a signal yet my switch is either always on one bar or worse yet can't even find my internet.

If I was only ever able to have Monster Hunter and EO games in the future, I would be a happy man.
