@iKhan: Or do like Ocarina of Time did, and give Link 5 potential girlfriends.
The thing is that OoT never TOLD you that "Link" likes those characters. The just kind of forced themselves on him.
Yeah, Link keeps his distance... And even then only character who outright states she likes Link that way is Ruto... Everyone else is either just a childhood friend or just a girl he happened to meet.
Fans like ships though.
Let's see if we can list them:
-Saria: Friend, she obviously cared for him, but probably in a more fraternal way. Might be his mother figure.
-Malon: She quickly befriended him, but kinda forgot about him later. Her dad wants you as his son in law.
-Zelda: Kinda crazy and a total conspiracy theorist. They meet twice, formally.
-Ruto: His official fiancee. Had to cancel because reasons.
-Nabooru: Mostly wanted the treasure. Complimented his adult self, and implied she had no actual intention of rewarding him as a kid.

It's not just fans, lol. You're high if you don't see how meeting Malon in the middle of the moonlit ranch prairie and playing a song from her childhood along with her singing or sneaking into the castle gardens to meet Zelda could be romantic. OoT is basically an incomplete dating sim.
If they do end up degrading her to gender swap, that'd be disappointing for sure. I'd like to believe they'll use her in better ways, should they decide to bring her back, or add her to the main games.
The 3D games barely have any recurring (as in reincarnating) characters. The only ones I can think of are Zelda, Link, Ganondorf, Tingle, and Dampe and Linkle certainly isn't on that level. She wasn't even made by Nintendo just... please. Please no.
@TheLastLugia: in TP I'd say they're.... Acquaintances? ...
"Do... Do you like goats?"
Haha, yeah. Just like in OoT Link sneaks into Hyrule Castle to meet Zelda at the beginning of his journey and saves her at the end. Twilight Princess just didn't have the whole Sheik tutorial arc, so their relationship came off as much more overtly political / professional.
I am very okay and excited with all three of these rumors.
If there is voice acting but Link is still a silent protagonist it'll be fine. It'll be awkward in emotional scenes still, but dialogue will at least be faster like in Skyrim.
That being said, it would be missing a golden opportunity for Link to sound like one damn sexy terrorist.
Trigger Warning: Death via gun.
Furthermore, I would love to play as Zelda, but I wonder if she wouldn't be too different to animate both her and Link. The Fem!Link fanbase should also get some love. God knows they've waited long enough. Either Zelda or Fem!Link (not Linkle) would be cool as a playable character. I hope we'll get to see them both before too long.
Recently finished: Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, Splatoon 3: Side Order, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD
Currently playing: Zelda: Skyward Sword HD
What's next: ?
@mjharper: People have talked about parallels between the first Zelda U trailer and the opening scene of Princess Mononoke. Maybe Nintendo will continue these Studio Ghibli inspirations by giving Link a My Neighbor Totoro-esque relationship with his horse! Lol.
Epona: "My name is Epona. What's yours?
Link: "Groooooaaan grumble grumble Hyut Hyaaaugh Scraagh!"
Link is a silent protagonist but only to the gamer. Using Twilight Princess as an example it's obvious he is communicating with the other characters, and they confirm so with dialogue such as "The kids are safe? Thanks for letting me know." (paraphrasing here). He's not this empty, emotionless shell some people make him out to be.
Regarding Zelda U, I hope he stays silent (to the gamer). It can be argued he lacks substance now, but he could lose his identity altogether if portrayed by a voice actor.
I believe in Skyward Sword there were also instances were he communicated and explained things to others. Like when Groose followed him down to the surface from Skyloft, and the camera zoom's out while Link explains the situation to him.
Even if they add voice acting, I doubt they'd get rid of the text boxes. Kinda like Fire Emblem, and Hyrule Warriors (just with actual words and not just uncomfortable grunts and moans).
