@Grumblevolcano
Inklings are included because they are on the Switch, not because they were in the ballot (since the ballot was taken during the Wii U days)

Like the past games, they'll definitely add in a few characters from the current console regardless of whether or not those characters are that popular or not.

Inklings were added because they are popular characters on a successful franchise, one of the few that generated on the wiiu.

Smash tends to focus on celebrating the previous gen.

And then there's that one character or stage promoting a yet-to-be released game. Roy in Melee, Yoshi's Woolly World in 4. For Switch, the most likely candidate for that role would be Metroid Prime 4.

It's worth mentioning that Smash has an aversion to characters that are explicitly dead in their series canon, so I wouldn't hold my breath for Champions.

Starters always seem like safe assumptions for Pokemon, but I think Tapu Koko is the most likely mon from Gen 7 that isn't one.

Alone, a force. Together, a force of nature.

Ganondorf is explicitly dead. R.O.B never had canon. He was a peripheral.

Marth is explicitly dead as of Awakening.

Shulk is self explanatory.

Pit is an angel so...

Let's take a look at that logic shall we:

For Smash Bros. on 3DS and Wii U:
Bayonetta was on Wii U
Animal Crossing's Villager was popularized on the 3DS: New Leaf made it way bigger than City Folk
Robin, Lucina, and Corrin are new characters introduced on the 3DS
While not it's first appearance, Bowser Jr and his Clown Car had MANY more appearances in Wii U and 3DS titles like Dream Team, Mario Party 10, and Sticker Star.
Rosalina was in Wii's Galaxy, but she was featured in Galaxy 2 and 3D World on Wii U and 3DS before being brought to Smash
The Kid Icarus characters Palutena and Dark Pit only appeared on the 3DS
Wii Fit U had launched a year prior to Smash's release
I can't say I'm familiar with Street Fighter's releases but it looks like it did end up on the Wii U a year before Smash

Shulk was originally from the Wii. XC did get a port to 3DS but it didn't go so well
Punch Out got a fancy overhaul on the Wii
Duck Hunt showed up on the Wii VC and the Wii U VC
The Miis were released on the Wii and remained a core feature of Wii U and 3DS

So that's 11 characters popular on Wii U and 3DS
And only 4 characters popularized from Wii (3 of which were re-featured on the Wii U and 1 of which originated decades ago)

Cloud didn't really show up at all before Smash 4
Megaman was out of the blue.
Pac Man was more or less a blindside. He had an animated series and an awful game on the Wii U but his original series has been chugging along.

Yes, because things only work in absolutes and extremes.

What I say should be obvious to anyone. Smash games usually come relatively early into each new console's lifespan. Guess what's the period of time with the most content to use then? The period of time after the last smash. Which involves mostly content released on the previous console.

The 3DS was around during the Wii era, too. It has lived across three home console generations, so "previous gen" during the WiiU era included 3DS games too.

@Blathers Galaxy 2 was a wii game, and neither 3D World nor Galaxy 2 was on 3DS. Rosalina's decision to be included in Smash preceded 3D World's release, as her announcement video makes clear.

Wii Fit Trainer's reveal in June '13 was long before Wii Fit U's release. Beyond that, Wii Fit and Wii Fit + are the two titles that popularized the characters.

Villager had been in contention for being added since Brawl, and Wild World on the DS was a huge selling that popularized the design used in Smash. New Leaf uses a different style of Villager.

Street Fighter's appearance on Wii U was a virtual content release, of which Wii had far more of. Ryu's popularity with nintendo gamers is mostly due to the game's SNES releases, nothing to do with Wii U.

Bowser Jr. first used the Clown Car in the incredibly well selling New Super Mario Bros. Wii. His sole appearances with it on Wii U reused assets from said game.

Megaman had no less than 6 DS titles to his name, ZX, ZX Advent, Star Force 1-3, and Zero Collection, as well as two new classic entries Megaman 9 and 10 on the Wii which is what his appearance was based on.

The 3DS was doing nothing in 2011, but it was successful around the time Smash launched - 2012 and 2013 saw some killer games
The Switch has been more successful in it's 1 year than the Wii U was in it's entire life span. Guess which console is going to form the majority of the newcomers for Smash 5?

Even if they did draw on the Wii U library, who would they bring in? Finn and Jake from all the Adventure Time ports? Elliot? Lilac the Dragon? I can see someone from Xenoblade making it in but I think it's slightly more likely XC2 will get a feature over XCX

@link3710 You're right, I overestimated the power of the Wii U it its launch window compared to the existing strength of the Wii and got a few of my origins wrong.
Though that's more in favor of Switch characters being used for Sma5h, isn't it?

TBH the Villager seems to be closer to the City Folk model (the Wild World model was a mess) and even so, that doesn't mean it was included because of that game. Plenty of characters get new models when they're brought to Smash

@Blathers Well there's plenty of Wii U characters to pick from though most of them are (or will) be on Switch because of ports.

  • Inklings
  • Captain Toad
  • Wonder Red
  • Cranky Kong (Tropical Freeze was his first playable role, I think)
  • BotW Link
  • BotW Zelda
  • BotW Champions
  • Shovel Knight

There's plenty of others, those are just a few examples.

Not to mention that they don't need to limit themselves to WiiU (although there's quite a bit of new content they could get from there), the 3DS is still a thing and it was very active during the period between the last smash game and this one.

Even some of the games that already have stuff on 4 could get some new content. Example, Yoshi's Woolly World and Fire Emblem Fates.

Who's ready to play as every single member of the royal families of Hoshido and Nohr?

As I've said on that 10 characters for smash thread, I think it is possible to see a Gen 8 pokemon in this Smash. It likely depends on how much we know about Gen 8 by the time Smash is out.

I admit that the idea is a little more hopeful. I just really wouldn't care much to see Decidueye, much less see someone get removed for him. Decidueye is awesome looking, but I've always thought it was disappointing, stat wise, compared to both Incinaroar and Primarina. NOTE: I am casual garbage.

If I had to pick a Gen 7 Pokemon, I'd choose Golisopod. And yes, a part of my reasoning is because of Guzma.

Or we could just get Guzma himself. Of course with a little bit of help from his pokemon.

I'd imagine Guzma would be into the whole battle to the death thing.

And he already has a crouching pose.

I was very tempted to write something like "You know what? Forget Golisopod! Let me play as Guzma!"

I'm glad I'm not the only one who could come up with the idea of playable Guzma.

I imagine his final smash is screaming "Y'all are stupid!"

Splatoon has a lot of potential for stages, from The Reef (S2) to Urchin Underpass (S1). I think Octo Valley/Canyon would be a great stage, but so would any other location really. Maybe a stage where the area rotates between several locations like Delfino.

As far as items, Squid Sister/Off the Hook assist trophy and Rainmaker as a Firework Cannon-like item.

Aside from the great selections of music to be brought directly over, a medley of the bands and a remix of Calimari Inkantation would be rad.

So much potential, so little time (until release day).

I'd love to see a Fire Emblem stage that's actually a specific area from one of the games. Arena Ferox was the first (and so far only) one, being from Chapter 4 of Awakening, and it was cool to see.

@Pazzo-ZaFool I'd like to think that a Splatoon-themed stage would be based on something other than Urchin Underpass - only because it has already inspired a battle map in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, so it'd be good to see one of the other stages/locations get some love instead!

Something like Moray Towers has good elevation, so might lend itself quite well to a side-on Smash stage - or they could use Inkopolis Square as inspiration perhaps, with the Great Zapfish occasionally flying in overhead as it does in Splatoon 2? ..definitely many possibilities - and whichever one they choose, I'm sure it'll be totally FRESH!
