Anyone share the leak about the new characters? A leaker that predicted the recently postponed Direct's date had a slew of information. For those curious, the leaker claimed Incineroar and Isaac were to be announced as new fighters.
Don't really care about the former, but the latter has me excited. Makes me wonder if we'll see a new Golden Sun title on the Switch.
@jtmnm To be fair, that leak is obviously fake. I and many others had predicted a direct on either 9/13 or 9/6 before E3, considering Nintendo's tendency to throw out a Thursday direct the first two weeks of September every year.
Plus, the new Pokemon's name was like Gully-bill or something like that (Gullible).
EDIT: Also, he had the runtime and major topic of the direct wrong and the airtime.
EDIT 2: Plus I forgot he's missing the Megaman 11 demo that was clearly to be announced as an 'after the direct' bonus based on it's launch time. And no mention of Yoshi which has already been leaked as in the direct.
@jtmnm That I can actually almost guarantee. Today's Smash blog update didn't post, the first missed post (globally) since they started. And considering they always feature new characters or content the day of a reveal...
@ReaderRagfish I mean that they put a feature into the service that I'm willing to pay for that I didn't have to pay for in the past.
If Nintendo starts writing rock solid netcode and implements better social features, maybe I'll get on board. But right now Nintendo is offering something worse than what is on the 3DS, and charging for it.
I can hold my hunger for Smash. I will not be bullied into giving Nintendo money for nothing.

He's a Playstation icon, isn't he? At least he was born on Playstation around the time Nintendo devastated his silly debut with Super Mario 64. At the time it seemed Playstation fans were blind to the huge quality difference. 20 years later they still are. I have a friend who loves Crash. He got his Switch game and played the Crash Bandicoot games on Wii. But I think the games are mediocre at best. I think Spyro is the better Activision platformer and Spyro/Skylanders has actually a better chance of representation with Donkey Kong and Bowser being playable in Skylanders SuperCharged for Wii U and even having their own Skylanders amiibo. However, if Sakurai wants a Western 3D-Platformer icon to be added to the roster, both Rayman and Banjo-Kazooie deserve it more than Crash and Spyro. Banjo-Kazooie is one of the highest voted characters on different polls (and one of the best 3D platformers ever made), and Ubisoft did more for Nintendo with recent crossovers such as Mario+Rabbids and Starlink and their loyalty over the last decade.
2. Sora
I don't like Disney games, apart from the SNES classics made by Capcom. I like JRPGs but I don't like crossovers with western characters. And most importantly I don't like Sora as a character just from a visual standpoint. Isn't Sakurai's company called Sora as well? Wouldn't that confuse people? I never played Kingdom Hearts and I never will. The last Disney game I played was Mickey Epic on Wii, and I gave up halfway through out of boredom.
3. Goku / Shrek / anyone else that's not originated in a videogame
Let's just never mention them again.
4. Sans / Hollow Knight / other very recent popular indie game characters
Shovel Knight is the most popular indie character at the moment, and he surprisingly made it as an Assist Trophy. I can see Shantae also being an Assist Trophy, along with CommanderVideo, but that's it.
5. Paper Mario / Toon Zelda / other underwhelming Nintendo reps
People's only reason is that there's also 3 Link's and that's a stupid reason to have 3 Mario's as well. Mario is already represented. If you know Mario then you know Paper Mario, easy as that, he doesn't need double and triple confirmation. I love the Paper Mario games, but that doesn't mean Paper Mario needs to be in Smash. I also think a Paper Mario amiibo would be rubbish. I'd rather have First Party Nintendo franchises that are not represented at all: Isa / Saki / Kachi (Sin And Punishment), Chibi-Robo, Zael (The Last Story), Aeron (Pandora's Tower), Kyle Hyde (Hotel Dusk), Ricky Winterborn (Wave Race & 1080°), Katherine (Endless Ocean), Jim Rivers / Nigel York (Excitebike), Ashley Mizuki Robbins (Another Code), Turbine (Tetrisphere), Isaac (Golden Sun), Andy (Advance Wars), Takamaru (The Mysterious Murasame Castle), Foreman Spike (Wrecking Crew, Hyper Golf), Mike (StarTropics), Bubbles (Clu Clu Land), Dillon (Dillon's Rolling Western), Mallo (Pullblox), Chorus Kids / Karate Joe (Rhythm Heaven), Alexandra Roivas (Eternal Darkness), John Raimi (Geist), Professor Layton, etc. etc. If we really need another Mario rep what about better popular ones like Toad/Toadette, Pauline, Waluigi, Kamek, and Shy Guy? I know some of them are deconfirmed but I'd put them along with King Boo, Petey Piranha, Birdo, Paratroopa, and more, above Paper Mario.
@SKTTR Welp, can't really argue that Crash isn't the best choice for Activision, I'm all for Spyro over him (and Rayman and Banjo and Kazooie over either of them) for the same reasons as you. That said, I don't think he doesn't deserve to ever be in Smash, just not yet.
Sora's reasoning is pretty stupid though. "I have never played his games so they must be awful" isn't exactly good reasoning, nor is claiming that Sora Ltd. having the same name is a bad reason for him to be added.
Points 3 and 4 I'm in full agreement with (Indies are a great pick for AT, but outside of Shantae and to a lesser degree Commander Video none of them have been proven to having staying power yet. If we do get an Indie rep, it needs to be one of those two, or a Tohou rep)
Paper Mario only being wanted due to the 3 Link/Mario pattern is junk though. He was highly requested during Smash 4's leadup as well. The main reason people want him is that they want all the partners from the Paper Mario games, but getting them individually will never happen. A moveset that utilizes Madame Flurry, Kid Yoshi, Goombella/Goombario, Kooper/Koops, Bombette/Captain Bobbery, Tippi etc would be huge, and allow for a ton of characters that wouldn't otherwise even get a cameo that are quite popular. Claiming Foreman Spike would be more important than adding him shows a massive lack of knowledge of what people want him to represent. That said, Mike Jones and Kyle Hyde for Smash please. (Plus add John Raimi and Alexandra Roivas to that list please)
@link334 I never said "I have never played his games so they must be awful". I only explained that Kingdom Hearts is totally not my kind of game even though I love JRPGs, and Sora is a character I dislike. Sora is a character that crossovers with cartoon characters. Kingdom Hearts is popular because people love Disney characters and not because of its merits as a videogame. That alone I hope is reason enough not to include him.
Alexandra Roivas from Eternal Darkness and John Raimi from Geist? Thanks for the suggestions. Added.
Also, now that you mention a fleshed-out version of Paper Mario I like the idea a little bit better.
And don't crap on Foreman Spike. I love Wrecking Crew which is an ingenious puzzle platformer (and one of the first games with a level editor) and I beat 96 out of 99 levels of the original game. I'm still waiting for a re-release of Wrecking Crew '98 since the Wii's Virtual Console. He was a playable character in a Japanese-only Mario Golf title as well. And most importantly he's got a stage and music in SSB4, so I felt he was missing from the roster.
@SKTTR Claiming people don't like KH games on their own merits is definitely untrue. I can't speak for everyone of course, but my friend fell in love with the game before finding out it was a Disney crossover (no joke, this recently happened because of Twilight Town in Days not having any Disney elements). And a huge huge number of people adore the KH original characters. Not to mention, the series has mostly had solid gameplay (outside of BBS but... yeah there's a reason everyone hates how that game plays, and the story isn't much better.) I mean, if you made a KH game without any Disney elements I'd still be buying it day one, and I know a number of people who'd agree with me. Would it have become as popular as it is without Disney? Heck no. Doesn't mean that the games aren't good.
Anyways, I wasn't crapping on Foreman Spike, I think he'd be a fun retro character. I just don't think he'd do as much for the roster as (a properly implemented) Paper Mario would.
I would be ok with your rendition of Paper Mario. If he would team up with Goombario, Kooper and the other sidekicks (on the amiibo as well) I would put him before a couple on my list.
@SKTTR Cloud is just as much of a Playstation icon as Crash and unlike Crash, Cloud still doesn't have his game on Nintendo hardware so I guess you wish Cloud was cut?
@Grumblevolcano Don't forget Theatrhythm Final Fantasy! Actually... in regard of Final Fantasy representation in Smash Bros. Cecil Harvey would've been the ''logical'' choice if you only allow characters that have a few games on Nintendo systems. Cecil stars in Final Fantasy IV (SNES) Final Fantasy IV DS remake and well... Theatrhythm Final Fantasy. That's still more than Cloud I think?
But you can give me Nathan Drake and I'm happy. Super Smash Bros is a celebration of video games in general. I'd like a roster that represents all the best video gaming has to offer. Therefore I don't really care if a certain character don't have 2+ games on Nintendo systems. In my opinion it's silly to exclude for that reason. End the console wars! Give me some playstation characters!
I realise Super Smash Bros is still a Nintendo game and the developers can only do so much each instal. Balance and gameplay have priority over roster, so these are just hopes and dreams. My first playstation suggestion would be the protagonist from Persona 5, it just so happens that he does get a game on the 3DS.
A piece of the Triforce appeared before you! (>'.')> â–² Touch it now!
I think if Shovel Knight, pretty much the king of indies, only got in as an AT, no indie will be playable.
Given Simon and K. Rool - not to mention Ridley! - are finally in, I think Sakurai is focusing on making the fans happy this time (why else undertake such a huge task of putting every character and most stages of all Smash games into Ultimate?).
That's why I'm expecting Geno and Isaac to show up.
@GoldenGamer88 Problem is that both Shovel Knight and Issac are already in "Blade Strangers" an indie fighter so dont see either of them appearing as true fighters
