@Tendo64 I'm sorry to hear that it's not clicking too well for you. It might not be a game that's your cup of tea, which is completely fine too.
I did find it to be a lot to handle when I started with it as well, as this was my first Monster Hunter game. What I found helpful was to watch one or two weapon tutorials to get the hang of a few move-sets and then just played around in the village quests and slowly picked up each mechanic over time. I'd say I was 10 or more hours playing the game before I started properly using Wirebugs and even longer before I figured out using items like traps and bombs. 80 hours in and I still haven't even touched any of the weapons that involve using ammo 😂.
Trying to do it all at once was definitely an off-putting way to begin playing the game for the first time so I just wanted to offer you that small suggestion in case it helps at all.
@Tendo64 The game isn't all that complicated, and resources for understanding pretty much anything about it are readily accessible online. Although based on the tone of your post, I get the sense you're more interested in complaining than actually learning how to play it, so carry on, I guess.

Apologies everyone for last night's outburst and for any offence. I'm just frustrated at it and I really want to like it and not miss out on what seems like a fantastic game. I'm going to keep trying with it, can't give up this early - I keep dying on the very first quest. I'm horrible at it. :/

First, make sure you're accepting Quests from Hinoa (the outdoors questgiver- that's single player Village Quests) and NOT Minoto (the indoors questgiver- that's Hub Quests designed for multi-player, and while they do scale to solo play, they're still more difficult).
Before taking on any Quests fighting large monsters, the game will have you do a few Quests fighting small monsters and gathering herbs and insects and stuff. Also, there are multiple tutorial Quests you can access from Hinoa. Absolutely do those first before anything.
Then go to the training area and try the different weapons. You can press + to open menu, tab over to hunter's notes, and checkout the move list and recommended combos. Try out each of the weapons and see which feels best to you. Just go to your item box in the hallway entrance to the training area to switch weapons. Once you've found the one you want to stick with, practice for about 20 minutes. Just doing combos, checking your notes, practicing running, sheathing, dodge rolling, attacking, etc.
Then, and only then, should you proceed with the 1 star Quests in the village. But again, the game won't even have you fight a large monster until the 1 star urgent quest appears. By then you should at least know how to wield your weapon competently, know how to sheath, dodge roll, pan your items and use items, etc.
If you must, Google a beginner's tutorial on YouTube.
The game is 100% worth investing the time into to learn. If you have specific questions, just ask.

Monster Hunter ends up easy. Even if youre a long time Monster Hunter player since Freedom Unite, you can easily beat a Magnamalo with the help of the wire bugs to get the purple blastlight off of you. The only time Rise gets "hard" or tough is when youre forcing yourself to find the stupid Relics which the game hides real good.
Once you get the Ibushi Great Sword youll have a better time going through the monsters plus wearing High Rank "S" armor youll have no problems except if you dont have Sleep protecting when fighting the new stupid water mud monster thats just a copycat of World's Jurysomething
I still have yet to find the rest of the Relics in each map country area. I just dont know where the hell the rest of the Relics are anyway
Been learning the Lance, as I saw a video of someone using it and went ooooo. Lots to learn, like I only found out mid fight against high rank Nargacuga that I had a power guard and a counter thrust lol. Love the counter thrust tho, a counter with a relatively huge counter window and no wire bug cost? Sign me up, I got very little value out of Anchor Rage, Spiral Thrust all the way!
Since I already beat the game's Village story quests and doing all of the Gather Hub online with other people, ive been thinking about making one pair of dual blades or at least a hammer for something different.
just made the Nargacuga long sword last night along with the poison Rathian Great Sword.
switch axe weapons I dunno how good they are anymore these days for Rise. Never cared for them in World since Capcom changed everything.
I used to enjoy one or two switch axes in Monster Hunter 3 for my 3DS.
Everytime theres a new Monster Hunter game where they keep adding or changing things for weapons i tend to use less of them. Thats why I always stick with great swords and long swords since theyve always kept me alive and going through monsters in quests

Eh, too lazy to mess with photos, only time I used the camera is when I found the rare endemic life. Only found two of them so far.
Also, digital event happening next week to talk about ver 2.0 and Stories 2. I am curious to see what's going to change with Chammy here, whatever happens, I hope they bring back that music effect that was in 4U. Where the music sounds muffled/covered up or something whenever he went into rage mode and the thick mist rolled in. For some odd reason they removed it in Gen/Gen U, so the mist or whatever just looked weird without the music effect. lol
You know what I really hate, people that say that "Man I hate long sword user's they never go for the tail" "the weapon is no skill all you do is parry" but you know what? what about the people that have been playing long sword for a long time? Like me (I know It was only world) I mean I didn't really think longs word was a good weapon back in world, and back in world I had no parry, and yes I will agree that long sword speed runs are nothing but parrying but still, I don't wish to be lumped in with the long sword players that do nothing but trip there team, thats not me and if you play with me I do nothing but attack the tail, nothing I will not go for any other part till the tail is gone (Most of the time) its just kinda
annoying. sorry for the rant LOL. (Also when I said long sword wan't good in world I mean that the sword didn't have switch skill or parrying at the time, and even with ice born you still got punished if you missed the parry) (This is a big reason why I started maining great sword as my 2nd main bc people don't seem to stomp on them and call, long sword users no skill.
So I went for one of the harder weapons in this game, but my god do I suck at not getting hit, i'm still working on it, again sorry for the rant.

@Ulysses I'll open a room after I get done with the quest I'm on — as for sets, I do kind of a mix; get a few good damage skills, then play around with the rest (I just made an Artillery set a little earlier — basically just switched Shot booster out for Artillery Lvl 3.)
