I think that if Nintendo can squeeze at least 50% extra content on top of what MK8 has, it will be marketed as a brand new title. Mario Kart 9? Perhaps, but I think Nintendo might opt with the extended name for this iteration. Mario Kart Switch sounds more likely to happen than Mario Kart 9, personally.
@Portal_King
They will probably make different names for the ports so that people don't confuse them. With the Switch version of MK8 they might just as well call it MK Switch, because it will most likely have a lot of new content, but a port like the rumoured Xenoblade Chronicles X might just have something added to the name just to indicate it's an improved version of the game.
All I want is a decent battle system again. With traditional areas, a last man standing mode with no time limit and that nice Bob-omb Blast mode from Mario Kart Double Dash. Why do they keep messing around with that part of the game?
I do enjoy me some Mario Kart, so it's more than likely that even if this is a port of 8, I'd still grab it.
A Double Dash mode of some type would be great, though with the two item slots I'd say that might be easier to do. Don't forget, all that needs to happen for a Double Dash mode is for items to not be able to be held behind you and much looser control of karts.
Also, stacking of items [or at least upgradable power-ups] was done in ModNation Racers. It's a thought of something interesting that could be added, even if just in a separate mode.

I'm going to get this (I love MK8) but I really hope there are some substantial new stages. As a day on MK8 owner this hurts just a tad otherwise.

You know what I really like about MK8 Deluxe? This.
Players can even choose to use a new Smart Steering feature which makes driving and staying on the track easy for novice players and kids, even at 200cc.
My younger children can now play this game without getting frustrated, they love Mario Kart on their 2DS but they struggle to steer their karts.
I think I will wait until more of my friends have NS systems before I snag this. I don't care about battle stages and I usually play as my mii.

I'm happy about this. The only thing I didn't like about MK8 was the battle mode.
Is anything known about local multiplayer? Would be insane, yet awesome if you could play that with up to 8 players.

It's also been since Double Dash that a home console Mario Kart had traditional Balloon Battle. The time limit makes sense for online matches with random players, which is probably why it was added in the first place, but they should at least include the classic mode for local play and perhaps for online with friends.
My 3 biggest complaints with MK8 were:
1) Coin items
2) Inability to hold and collect an item at the same time
3) Screwed up battle mode
This port is addressing two of my three major complaints and has added extra characters and portability on top of everything. It's going to be an almost perfect game.

I think Nintendo may balance the retro track representation if there's new tracks. This is how things are so far:
SNES - 2 (Donut Plains 3, Rainbow Road)
N64 - 4 (Toad's Turnpike, Royal Raceway, Yoshi Valley, Rainbow Road)
GBA - 3 (Mario Circuit, Cheese Land, Ribbon Road)
GCN - 4 (Baby Park, Dry Dry Desert, Sherbet Land, Yoshi Circuit)
DS - 3 (Cheep Cheep Beach, Tick-Tock Clock, Wario Stadium)
Wii - 3 (Moo Moo Meadows, Wario's Gold Mine, Grumble Volcano)
3DS - 4 (Melody Motorway/Music Park, Piranha Plant Pipeway/Piranha Plant Slide, Koopa City/Neo Bowser City, DK Jungle)
So to balance the representation, the new retro tracks could be like:
@Julius_Senpai Up to 4 players on the same Switch but up to 8 through wireless local play. I hope it's possible to mix and match in a way that you can play with two consoles in one room and have 8 players in one game (4 players per console) instead of everyone having to own the console when playing local wireless. Me and my friends play Smash during breaks and it would be great to play 4 player multiplayer even if only one or two of us have the console.
It's its, not it's.
