Okay, so it seems we'll be getting a new Mario Kart game for the Switch. In the trailer we saw Yoshi's Island which is a course that's been used three times already, but we also so the two players having two items at the same time, which isn't possible in Mario Kart 8. One of the players was also using Boo as their character.

Do you guys think this is a new Mario Kart game or a port with some overhauls?

I definitely think it's basically a port with extras. The big question being whether these extras come to wii u as a key thing to note is that a key Emily Rogers rumour was crossplay between wii u and switch and she was right about what the nx was, when it would be revealed and some games for the system so far.

Mario Kart 8 meets Double Dash!! and King Boo.

@NintyFan - Pretty much, I doubt Nintendo has the time to make a full blown sequel right now. MK9 will come 2018 or 2019 but for now, MK8 with icing on the top is more than enough.

@novaDRGN I'm thinking, what if this replaces Mario Kart 9? Will they release a port and a new game? That's a bit weird. The reason why we never got more than one entry per console is because one game provides enough content for the entire generation. It could very well be that this is the Mario Kart for Nintendo Switch.

@Octane - You're probably right, Octane. The question remains, how much new content are they putting in?

I feel like Smash Bros. would have been a better game to port since they could combine modes and stages from Wii U and 3DS and possibly add some new characters. Considering the past few Mario Kart games have come out every three years, that means we could see Mario Kart 9 in 2017, though 2018 may be more likely. Meanwhile, a new Smash Bros. game probably wouldn't come until 2019.

@PokeMario A Smash port is more than likely happening, just that Nintendo decided not to put it in the reveal trailer.

With DLC and patches around Nintendo could very well release the new game, patch it with new features and include additional content in the future. There could be a season pass of some sort like it was in 8 or a single mid-life update. I think that Ubisoft's The Crew did an update that had graphics revamped, so as long as it's the same engine, ports could still be improved later on.

To me it makes zero sense to release Mario Kart 8 again with a few new extras. Why can't Mario Kart 9 use the same engine, more modes, more tracks, more characters, etc.? It's uaully 3-4 years between MK's and last one was 2014, so 2017 is right on target. But who knows? It could very well be MK8+Extras.

I'm happy to see King Boo, one of my favorites from Mario Kart Wii return! I also hope to see the return of Bowser Jr. and Diddy Kong and maybe some more guest characters. I also think it might be a direct port but I'm not entirely sure.

At this point I think that Mario Kart in that trailer is probably Mario Kart 8.5 or something. In other words it's just a port with a little extra. Whatever extras those are I hope they make it to the Wii U version because I have no intent of buying Mario Kart 8 again unless its Mario Kart 9 or something.
That reminds me... Mario Kart Wii did reuse some of Mario Kart Double Dash's assets. What are the chances it'll be the same situation here?

God first.

Plot twist: This was Mario Kart 9 that reuses the engine and assets from Mario Kart 8. Yoshi's Circuit just happens to be a returning course.

@Vee_Flames I agree with you, a Mario Kart 8.5 seems likely at this point.
Though, if this is Mario Kart 9 and it reuses the Mario Kart 8 engine, then I think later on in the Nintendo Switch's lifespan they will release a Mario Kart 10 with a brand new engine.

Anyone here played MK7 and MK8?

MK7 is just miles away from the experience in MK8, so a portable MK8 is going to be an exciting prospect for a lot of non-Wii U owners, provided Switch enjoys decent take-up from non-Wii U owners.

Also, bear this in mind: I see no reason why what we've seen in the Switch trailer can't come to Wii U MK8 via an update. I'd be prepared to pay for an update, but I doubt I'd bother paying full price for virtually the same game.

@gcunit I've played and enjoyed both. If this is Mario Kart 8.5 and it's only on the Switch, I'd probably want it because of King Boo and other characters I want to return + other new content.

AlliMeadow

@gcunit I hope they've decided to make Mario Kart 9, with the same assets as 8 and just reusing many of their tracks as retro tracks. Add in a new item or two, have 16 new tracks and a proper battle mode, and there'd be no reason to not buy this for any MK fan.

@gcunit Well we're in the Hyrule Warriors situation here again, does Nintendo throw Wii U owners a few last bones before the Switch releases or do they screw over Wii U users again to try and maximize sales of the port.

@Grumblevolcano The Wii U is a waste of money for anyone who owns another Nintendo console, and Nintendo. I expect no more Wii U support and DLC Pack 3 only coming to Switch.

@LegendOfPokemon Mario Kart 8 has sold around 8 million copies. That's a lot of potential DLC customers. MKSwitch had better be significantly different to MK8 if Nintendo wants to risk not selling the DLC on Wii U in the hope that those Wii U owners will upgrade to Switch and still want to buy a similar Mario Kart.
