@bimmy-lee I've got the 6 hole under my belt and briefly tried the 9 and stopped as it was getting late.

I'll give it another shot tonight for sure though.

I will run into these tornados like Bill paxon head on. My ball will be my Dorothy.

As mentioned before, i would be all over this mode (As i absolutely adore the concept) with the old shot system.
The current guide line is completely useless for everything but straight, level shots.
Playing uphill is just gambling with having to calculate terrain, slope, wind and the new spin nonsense, while you can't pre-judge a shot via the guide line.

Personally, that's just too many variables for my taste.
I still consider the GBA Mario Gold as one of my all time favorite games and i adore the series as a whole, but i simply can't get myself to enjoy this one more than it frustrates me.

It has plenty of great, new and fresh ideas, but i just can't deal with its new swing system and how much precision it sacrificed for being fast and intuitive enough to make Speed Golf possible.
I like Speed Golf...but not enough to sacrifice everything else for it, i'm sorry :/

@NintendoByNature - You will chase these tornados for love and for adrenaline. You will not be stopped.

@Einherjar - The only variable is where the ball is struck upon impact which can be negated by not gambling on a full power shot and setting power at the top of the “safe zone” as opposed to going full strength. In previous titles, you’d set bend and/or height by striking a specific spot on the ball, but now you just set it with the L stick; and you can add different movement for different sections of the flight path. I’ve played a fair amount of Mario Golf, and I find this to be a pretty sophisticated system for setting up perfect shots by series standards.

@bimmy-lee That's all well and good, but my issue, as described above, is that nothing of that can be set up pre-shot and that the guide line now doesn't show the proper flight path.
All of this makes short, sharp lobs finicky, frustrating and an absolute chore. Something that has been a non-issue in previous iterations, where you could clearly see if your angle was right to clear a ledge/slope/obstacle.

And if there's something i don't want in a Golf game, it's finicky, borderline QTE spin controls.
Yes, it's nice that you now have mind powers to bend the fabric of physics and reality and make your ball fly zig zags, i just wish it would be more... reliable, practical...

So again, my problem simply is the now useless guide line and the new spin nonsense.
On a level course it's fantastic, on more vertical courses, it's bad enough for me to not want to play the game anymore :/

@Einherjar - I really haven’t had trouble with the guideline, it seems the same to me. I will say that I think this game makes lie a bigger factor than it’s been in previous entries, specifically hitting from a slope or angle will drastically change your line. I didn’t have trouble gaining elevation once I accepted that I had to burn a stroke to set up space for a proper lob.

Have you done all the challenges? I’ve found doing them prior to doing the course gets my stats up to an appropriate level, and I learn quite a bit about the specifics of the course practicing the three phases in the challenges. Could be you just don’t like it as well. I’ve always loved Mario Tennis, and I just don’t really care for Aces much aside from the cool roster.

@bimmy-lee Yup, did all challenges prior to any story stuff (Usually do that in all games really).
Stats are fine and, as said, on regular courses, there is absolutely no issue (~ -10 Handicap on the first two courses), it's just the changes in ledges on the Cross Country course that's ruining it for me, as the guide line no longer indicated if a shot will clear the ledge or not and i simply can't deal with the spin stuff.

I actually do like the game quite a bit, i just can't deal with its swing mechanics and thus, can't make progress :/

@Einherjar isn’t the swing mechanics the entire game. If you don’t like them you are not going to like the game.

Einherjar

@sixrings It's pretty much all of the gameplay, yes. But there is more to a game per se.
I like the ideas behind the new modes, i like that they finally tried to have some sort of story mode again, i even like some of the gameplay changes (The new power bar for instance, showing roll distance and it showing the green is a godsend for approaches. Those are more precise than ever before!)

I just don't like that you can't pre-set a shot anymore. That all pre-planning now is a QTE that's also analog sensitive (Which is what's breaking my back here. The time frame per hit-zone is to narrow for me to input tilt-sensitive stuff).

Heck, i wouldn't even mind if i got stuck because, say, i wasn't able to hit the power bar properly or because my strategy was a mess.
But i run out of shots because i have no way to tell if i can clear a ledge or not.
It's not difficult, it's just extremely frustrating and arbitrary which is draining the fun the two prior courses build up.

Again, on the classic golf courses? It's a fantastic, fast paced golf game and it works like a charm.
It's really only ledges that don't work for me at all due to the changes in not being able to adjust shots pre-swing (And thus not having a guildeline that shows you if your short would clear it).
Issue is, this problem is now gating my progress through the game, and pretty early too.

@Einherjar - I understand now that you’re only having trouble with the guide line while attempting to scale a ledge. Yeah, it’s tough. I guess the only thing I can offer on that is to use a stroke to set up that shot so that you can use an iron to shoot straight at the edge of the cliff so that your ball passes over at its highest point. The tornados help, but you also need to be in position to shoot straight at them. I was often hitting out of the deep rough or bunkers after getting up on a cliff, but I was just happy to be up there.

Sorry to hear it’s ruining the fun for you though. Clearly you know how to play the game, and it’s just this very particular shot that’s giving you trouble. I’m sure you can do it, it’s just very frustrating. Hopefully you can put it behind you at some point and enjoy the rest of the game. The only other thing that jumped out to me after reading your replies is that I want to be sure you know that top and back spin are set with button presses when you set power. You don’t use the L stick for this.

@bimmy-lee Yup, it's really mainly vertical play that's causing me issues...and the fact that its gatekeeping me from the rest of the story mode atm
But yeah, i'll let it rest for a few days and try it again. I really don't want to burn out on it this early.

And yeah, Top/Back Spin works pretty much as it always did ^^ I even think that the backspin feels more precise than ever. The stick stuff is what you did with the D-Pad before (selecting where to hit the ball to set its arch).
And i think the main issue is that this was my bread and butter ever since and now it's gone...

@Atomic77 If you're on the edge, i'd say wait until they reveal what their content strategy is.
If i'm not mistaken, they mentioned that they plan to support it with free add-ons post launch.

See what this turns out to be and if it can sway you even further ^^
And don't let my moping turn you off, i'm just an old timer missing a feature he was using obsessively

@Einherjar - You’ll get it on a try when you’re not even expecting it. Let us know when you do, and I’ll buy the first round on the back nine to celebrate.

@bimmy-lee Hehe, i'll let you know ^^ And thank you for all the moral support!

@Atomic77
Well, Link's Awakening is a stone-cold classic, so you should definitely get it no matter what lol

But yea, I'm waiting to see what they're gonna do with new courses/characters before I shell out full price for this game.

@Einherjar - No problem, you’ll get it.

@JaxonH - That first shot is real nice. I always dropped down and got that pin closest to the start in XC, and I had that shot lined up several times but couldn’t stick it. I had the ball up on the ledge once, but it came back down. You can’t lay up in front of that tornado and approach it directly due to the big rock, so I usually burned a few more strokes driving down the fairway and hopped up at the end.

It’s a tough shot, for sure. Feels so good when you rock it though.

What you’re not seeing is the holes I struggled miserably on 😉 If you’re too close to the ledge, it’s incredibly difficult to make it up, tornado or not.

@JaxonH - Haha, yeah, I think everyone has struggled with XC. Thomas even made a point to bring it up in the review, something to the extent of, “power through and move on”. I eventually got through the nine hole by using all 40 strokes and tapping the ball around super conservatively like I was playing a game of pool. Once I’m done unlocking courses, I’ll go mess around in XC and see if I can hit that shot. I’ve also tried bouncing one off the big rock, but no luck.

I think your stats will also help make it easier. If you have good spin and power that can definitely help. But the first time you encounter this course for XC, your stats aren’t exactly the best. Which probably makes it just that little extra bit harder.
