@SwitchForce Wow you said a whole bunch of nothing at the slightest hint at negativity as usual.
Once again no one brought up the Switch's success but you still find a way to shoehorn it in with every defensive post you make.

Also I agree that Nintendo isn't, or would be foolish to go back to traditional consoles when this formula is working so well now. But that doesn't mean everyone will click with it, the OP was simply stating their opinion on how they feel about the Switch's aging power and the large power gap between it and current consoles.

Good... good
Now play Dragon Quest

Hmmmm nope. Have too many games on it and way too many good games coming out.

Not me, I'm nowhere near being bored of the Switch, hell I just picked up three more games for the system (Redout II, Power Rangers: Battle For The Grid, and My Hero One's Justice 2) earlier tonight. Besides that, both Monster Crown and Cuphead have been purchased by my wife as Christmas gifts for me. I also have fifty-one Switch games on my want list, eleven of which will release next year or later, the other forty already out given me plenty to play when I get around to buying them.

The Nintendo Switch brought me back into gaming at a time I was falling out of love with video games, on top of that, I've got two boys who are at that age where they are getting into gaming themselves, so yeah the Switch is still a big hit for us.

I wouldn’t say bored, but I’ve been playing my ps5 a lot more. It’s primarily a result of Covid, where I used the time and money (I thankfully held onto a job when it hit) to catch up on Nintendo games I hadn’t played yet. This continued on into 2022 with a momentum of keeping up with first party releases, and I can say I’m almost caught up on my backlog now gasp yep, just playing Arceus and then that’s it. So, this means I have catching up to do on PlayStation, which has been central to my game time this year. Just got miles morales in and am wrapping up Ragnarok now, followed by some other exclusives I haven’t tried yet. I’m not neglecting the Switch, just enjoying my PS5 more at the moment. I’m a man of seasons, things change.

That all said, Nintendo has me excited going into next year. Fire Emblem to start, and you can bet I won’t be bored with the Switch in summer because of a certain game coming out end of May 😉

I'm losing steam with Nintendo in general, and I don't think another console would restore my faith in them that easily. My main issue isn't really even the switch as a console itself, but moreso Nintendo seemingly growing complacent with the console. It feels like their AAA offerings aren't up to par with how they used to be, and a vast amount of games feel greatly inferior gameplay-wise to their counterparts on the last few systems. The only games I can even say I really liked first party-wise were Xenoblade, Luigi's Mansion 3, and Zelda. Other than that, most of their first party offerings have left me feeling empty or disappointed in one way or another.

The online service is abhorrent, and it hurts that I even have to pay money for it when Nintendo's online was previously free. Yes, it's cheaper than the competition, but when you don't use most of the services aside from the online, it feels like you're just throwing money down the drain. Cloud saves were one thing I was happy about, until I lost all the saves that mattered to me when getting a new switch. All the games that I needed cloud saves for, such as Pokemon and Animal Crossing didn't and still somewhat don't support them to this day. I've lost so many good pokemon, and so much progress just because of Nintendo allowing game devs to opt out for "Cheating" reasons.

Their live services also drained me. They would release nearly unfinished games or games that have a meek amount of content, and would expect people to pay full price for them. Then afterwards, it would take months for content to actually start dripping in a feed that was very minimal. I dropped so many games after about a month of playing them just because the drip feed model. That was one of the primary causes for why I think some of the games on Switch, like Animal Crossing New Horizons, are vastly inferior to the versions on 3DS or on the Wii.

Then you have the third party games, which for a while the third party stuff kept me engaged, but then more and more started to leave the switch for other better platforms, and so I've been mostly just gravitating towards playing those games on PS5 and PC instead.

If Nintendo makes a new console, I most likely won't purchase it around launch, and if the games they make aren't up to par, then I guess I'm going to stop buying Nintendo products.

Nope. I’ve got too many games to play to be bored and it still boots up faster than my series x or ps5 so I usually pick up the switch first.

It's always funny to hear how people want to play retro on the Switch at the same time put it down saying it's not powerful enough. Just looking at the Switch library should tell anyone their fantasy dream is just that fantasy. Switch is more then enough for gaming it doesn't require AAA games as gamers aren't just chest thumping games of male hormones'. Gamers come in all strip/age/gender but if you just read what people wanted anyone to read you thought it was just a male only and that couldn't be farther from the truth and that is why they don't work in Game creation.

I mean, I don't really disagree with your sentiment to some degree and I'm not a huge fan of those types of games either. But I think you've missed the mark a bit there. There are plenty of high fidelity games I wouldn't put in that "bro games" category, I don't think there's much of a correlation there

I mean when I think of recent high end "pretty" games the first things that come to my head are the Horizon series and the recent Tomb Raider games. When I talk about the Switch being underpowered generally I'm thinking of games that had poor performance like Fall Guys and Pokemon. Also games that will always be Nintendo exclusive and push the limits of the hardware, like Zelda and Metroid. I don't think any of those fit into the box you're trying to paint

Even more amusingly, my favourite games over the last year on PC have been Beat Sabre, Cities Skylines, Civ and Dirt/Cars. My favourite games on Switch over the last few years have been Hades, Metroid Dread and Bayonetta 3. So kinda ironically for me personally Switch is the platform where I play the more "masculine" games. Do you count rally driving as masculine? I guess maybe you have me there? Bit of a stretch though

Switch is a great companion device to other consoles. Didn't play mine at the start of the year much was obsessed with Persona 5 on the PS5. Then Elden Ring on the Series X. But started on my backlog and have been loving Neo World Ends with You, Resident Evil games, Metroid Dread and a good few others. Love the Switch as can play it while the other half watches TV etc. Also its great to take away on holiday. I'm still a good way from being bored with it but I mainly see it as a handheld rather than hybrid console. The OLED switch screen is lovely.

Out of all my consoles I've not touched my PS5 for months as got bored of the polished Ubisoft-like open world exclusives on there. Just found they all feel a bit samey after a while (Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, Horizon Zero Dawn etc). Game Pass and my Switch have kept me more than entertained.

@Link-Hero I honestly agree. The only game I might buy next year is TotK, if the trailers end up selling me. So far, I'm a bit apprehensive, since I'm unsure if it'll end up being just BotW again but with a few things tacked on. Nintendo not showing anything on the game slightly worries me.

@skywake To be fair, Pokemon's performance is less the switch and more Gamefreak not being the best at making games. SV could run fine on the switch, given a game like BOTW has more to it and runs with little to no hiccups (Outside Korok forest). SV is primarily just because the devs couldn't get enough time to finish it most likely, given how big of a glitchy mess the game is in general. ( I say this as someone who enjoys the game btw).

I have some issues with the Switch, like the paid online and some first-party games feeling rushed - plus it generally has a bit less 'character' than the likes of the Wii/U and 3/DS, though that may be nostalgia talking to some extent. But that nostalgia can't hide the fact the Switch has an insane number of amazing games, with arguably the best third-party support Nintendo's ever had as well as a steady stream of mostly great first-party games. I couldn't care less about power (I mean, I still use my Wii), I just care about fun games, so I don't think I'll get bored of the Switch for a very long time.

Thank you Nintendo for giving us Donkey Kong Jr Math on Nintendo Music

skywake

@VoidofLight
That's definitely true in the case of Pokemon and there are a lot of games that fit in that category. But there are also games that are pretty decently optimised for Switch but still fall a bit short. And even the ones that aren't well optimised the more power you have the more you can hide. So it's a bit of both

And in any case my point was more that it's not a case of high fidelity "toxic masculine" games and lo-fi family friendly games. And it's not just "bro" gamers asking for new hardware so they can play CoD at high framerates. There's Gears of War and Steam World Dig sure, but there's also Stray and Bro Force. These two things aren't tied to each other

No.

On the contrary, ever since Switch OLED and this banger of a year 2022, I’ve never been more enthusiastic!

From Triangle Strategy to Switch Sports, 13 Sentinels to Neon White, Fire Emblem Warriors Three Hopes to finally getting Portal 1 and 2 with gyro aiming on an OLED hybrid handheld, to Xenoblade 3 and Splatoon 3, Persona 5 and Nier Automata, Mario Rabbids Sparks of Hope and the almighty Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak, to Bayonetta 3 and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, to Trails From Zero and Pokémon Legends Arceus with gyro aiming for catching, finally an HD hybrid Dragon Quest Monsters game and now right at the cusp of Fire Emblem Engage, Persona 4 Golden and Octopath Traveler II, with Zelda TotK and Pikmin 4 on deck? It’s non stop excitement!

I just can’t and don’t play any other console anymore. 2022 Switch solidified my single-platform preference moving forward. It’s not that I’m “bored” with other consoles. I struggle to understand how anyone could ever be bored with an entertainment device that has hundreds of amazing games to keep you entertained, regardless of which device it is. But those other systems do not suit my needs and as such do not excite me. When I see a great game releasing on another system, if it’s not on switch I tend to treat it as if it doesn’t even exist because if I can’t play it in handheld and table top and docked, seamlessly switching between modes, I just don’t care to play it at all.

Now.

I have had somewhat reinvigorated interest in the SteamDeck lately, mostly due to the amazing Crisis Core on Switch making me want to play Remake on Deck (which by the way, Crisis Core on Switch looks better than Final Fantasy VII Remake on max settings on Deck for some reason), but that hasn’t lessened my interest in switch which is still the console I spend 98% of my time with.

But I say if someone isn’t enjoying a system, then go play another system, or do something else. It’s just plastic boxes with interactive games to entertain you during free time. If you get tired of it do something else. I like researching new cars with all wheel drive and checking the fully loaded packages and what the price would be per month. I also like studying mathematics and linear algebra since I use it as a metrology engineer at my job. If I get bored doing one thing I’ll go do another.

Not bored but having both PS5 and series x makes me want a more powerful Nintendo console, mainly for better load times, but I get that is tied with the overall power of the console.

Yeah, a long time ago unfortunately. Would much prefer a proper console rather than the handheld hybrid that makes many compromises. I'll always buy nintendo for mario alone but still a shame
