Yes, the Shovel Knight amiibo covered up the cost of developing the co-op mode. The amiibo unlocks co-op. They go hand in hand 1:1. It worked out for me. Moreso than most amiibo features.
But Shovel Knight isn't Wii U exclusive. What about the PC players? Or the PS players? There's versions for both the PS4 and PS Vita. The game was over-funded with the promise of certain features, as well as ports. There's no getting around the fact that they've betrayed a fair portion of their initial audience. If you want to restrict things by version, you don't go asking for the support of the public, you ask the console manufacturers and get an exclusivity deal, or you get published the more traditional way. If I was a backer, and I got any of the other versions, I would've felt like a tool. If they sell it as DLC later, fine. But then they'd have to price it in accordance with the amiibo, or else the amiibo owners would potentially feel ripped off. It's a dice-y position, and one that they had no reason to get themselves in.
If Playtonic wants to make an amiibo, I'd hope that it only unlocks something that's already available in-game, or at least unlocks something that's just complete fanservice. Their characters already look like they'd make great toys, I don't think they need to add that much extra incentive to get them to sell.
@CanisWolfred the buyer would get what they pay for (the game)
New buyers may get a choice, but I don't think it's fair to backers of those game to suddenly be told that they should've got one version over another without a single part of it being in the original plan. Yooka-Laylee got over 2 million GBP back when that really meant something. Even if more than half did it to get the Wii U version, there could still be roughly a million pounds-worth of buyer's remorse. It's not fair to their most loyal inital base of customers, and it's not exactly fair for new buyers, either. It's one thing to tell them "they got what they paid for" if any version differences were put upfront, as part of the initial plan, and as part of its advertising while the game is still in development. It's another thing to tell them they're going to get less for the same or higher price by the time the game is out simply because they weren't psychic.
I think wolf link in breath of the wild is the best use for amiibo yet and that isn't even out yet.
As for yooka laylee, the best games go gameplay first. If it sits nicely with the game and the way it's experienced go for it. If it's as pasted on as most amiibo usages, it's probably better left out.
Great news, there's physical versions of Yooka-Laylee happening according to the recent Kickstarter update and people will be able to upgrade their digital version to a physical version!

Sweet! Looking forward to that. Also, lol "business badgers".
@CanisWolfred "What about the PC players? Or the PS players?"
I don't know. Do they have a separate or intergrated NFC device? No?
Ask Yacht Club if they want to create their own PC/Playstation NFC reader, but I guess that would be too expensive, even with all the kickstarter money.
Yacht Club Games just loves the idea of having a physical toy, like Nintendo, Activision, Lego, and Disney. There's nothing wrong about that. Nintendo provided them with an easy and cost-effective opportunity. The other systems Shovel Knight was released on do not.
Missing Co-op and Custom Knight, how unfair!!!!! Maybe I should start complaining about my Wii U version not having the extra mode of the 3DS version and the special bosses of the Xbox and Playstation versions.
Fact is, all that you were told for getting, you already got, or are still going to get. I don't think amiibo and co-op were part of the kickstarter.
@SKTTR That's cold and selfish. That's all I have left to say. I'm done harping on this subject, especially since you aren't Playtonic. They're the only ones I'd have to convince should they consider such a route.
I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo hasn't already reached out to them about both an NX version and possible Amiibo. It might not be a popular choice as it may seem but wouldn't surprise me one bit.

If I was only ever able to have Monster Hunter and EO games in the future, I would be a happy man.
@CanisWolfred when do I get to fight kratos on my wiiu? When do I get to fight the battle toads? I got the game day one and they hadn't announced special boss fights for other consoles yet. That's cold and unfair. I would have waited had I known.

...That doesn't make any sense, but then again, neither did the last 3 posts I read on this website. Time for bed...
...and they're talking about kilts on one of the other websites I go to, and on the Backloggery stream, the two guys talking sound like they're under water.
So I stand corrected: I think it's time I take a break from the internet for about 3-4 days. ಠ_ಠ
@CanisWolfred your amiibo argument sounds like this. If you had known ahead of time you wouldn't have picked up a different version of shovel knight . It was unfair right? Those other versions also had exclusive content that is not on the wiiu version and that content was not announced until long after the wiiu version was released. This entirely defeats one of the main pillars in your argument.

I guess so? I don't know anything about Shovel Knight other than the one version I played. I'm sorry I got into this argument while remaining ignorant, especially considering how little I care. I hate the whole toys-to-life movement, to such a degree that I would do anything in my power to ensure it does not start infecting games I actually like, or at least withholding content I actually want. I don't know I felt the need to say more than that when I already know where I built my ironclad fence on this topic. I guess it's frustrating knowing that a developer I really want to use as a shining example of indie game development keeps finding new and unexpected ways to thwart those efforts, and the very suggestion that Playtonic should follow suit makes me want to spew bile all over my computer screen.
I'm glad/surprised that I haven't actually seen much of the game. I saw a couple of the trailers and people play that toybox demo thing and a few of the characters, but not much else. I don't know what a single other area looks like (maybe there was a cave once?), and that suits me just fine.
