@Spoony_Tech First gen since N64 without a proper 3D Mario (or any proper 3D platformer, really, as you pointed out). Also the first gen period where the home console hasn't gotten at least one exclusive mainline Zelda game.

For me, it's not just the linearity. It was also the sense of feeling like I was immersed in a world. 3D Land and World, as wonderful as they are, just feel like a collection of stages strung together to make a game. 64 (as much as I dislike it), Sunshine, and the original Galaxy all felt like they took place in living worlds. Maybe it's the hub structure, being able to talk to people, or the persistent and slightly more complex plots, but they felt like proper adventures, as opposed to mere platformers.

@DarthNocturnal I would agree on Galaxy 2, but not on the original. While it may have slightly anchored in some of the openness of previous 3D Mario games, I never felt like I was being shuttled through a series of levels. I actually think it has a perfect balance of openness, world-building, and focused level design.
Also, Galaxy 1 gets bonus points for never saddling me with any of those infernal Yoshi levels from Sunshine.

Was really glad to hear Playtonic is focusing on the Wii U version for this. Probably a tough, but I think correct, decision for them. It would've been easy to just focus on the PS4 and let the Wii U have a kind Watch Dogs-like inferior port.
But they've correctly realised how much of the platformer audience is with Nintendo. I think Wii U sales for this will probably be just as large as PS4 sales.
@DarthNocturnal Galaxy 1 less than Galaxy 2. Galaxy 1 was more linear than 64 and Sunshine, but both Galaxy 1 and 64 had those random collection of levels. The only game where the levels made sense was Sunshine. Still, Galaxy 1 had enough of the space theme for the levels to be considered more than just random stages strung together. Galaxy 2 ditched the space theme almost entirely and it often felt more like Mario Empty Cloud Background than Mario Galaxy.
