To be honest I'd like it to be more of a Mario Waverace game with all the normal Mario Kart characters but now jetski's instead of karts. I feel that would be commercially much stronger and more appealing. I think that is why I enjoyed Sonic Racing Transformed so much. It had kart racing, water racing and air racing combined so kept the game really interesting and I think the water sections were the sections I enjoyed most I'd quite like a full game like that but with a lot more outrageous courses and more to do. It's a bit like Pilotwings which again would be much better with Mario etc in it. Dogfights, air races etc. I really enjoyed Propellor Arena on Dreamcast. It was Crazy Taxi in the air but absolutely awesome for the time when this unreleased game got leaked onto the internet.
Waverace 64 felt right to me as well as being a technically showcase for the time but like others I found the Gamecube version didn't handle as well and lost most of the playability of the first version. I think it would be critical to get the controls just right with careful weighting of the jetski etc so it feels like you are handling a heavy jetski rather than something with zero weight. I often find the feel of many games is wrong more than anything else.

"commercially much stronger and more appealing" ew, gross. I'd rather have nothing.
Y'know, how about after that, we bring back Punch Out but its only IPs that can sell 10 million copies? Advance Wars characters can be replaced COD protagonists instead because popular IP and brand.
@judaspete I can't vouch for Wave Race or any other jet ski game (especially since all of them seem like cheap shovelware), but there hasn't been a snowboarding game in YEARS. I'd rather it be 1080 over SSX too tbh. I don't trust EA any more.

I wouldn't rule it out. There was reportedly another game in development for the Wii that got canned and hints were dropped about a potential revival in the Wii U era too.
Still, I'd think that we're more likely to get a Wave Race 99 online freebie or mid-price download than a full-featured full-priced game with modern stylings. It's one where they'd want to test the water first, if you'll excuse the pun.
Oh for sure I would. I bought Blue Storm earlier this year and have had a blast on it. I remembering renting 64 back in the day and enjoying that one too.
Wave Race
1080 Snowboarding
Excitebike
Would love all these to have a new, modernised entry. What mechanics would a new game bring? How many tracks/circuits/playable characters would be you like?
Was my first, immediate reaction. Love those games, and 1080, etc.
But then I remembered the lackluster Switch edition of Endless Ocean.
If the new Wave Race is a good-ass, put-together game, feature complete and handcrafted, then absolutely!
If it's some cobbled together project lesser than its predecessors in amount and quality of content, then...probably not? This is why it's hard to speak with our wallets alone. If I buy it, the lesson they'll take away is "this is good enough!" If I don't, the lesson they'll take away is "nobody wants Wave Race!"
Am I projecting too much upon this hypothetical release?

Rhythm Heaven? Moar liek Rihanna Heaven!
You may not like the idea but I'm fairly certain a Mario waverace game would sell a huge amount if decently programmed. Mario sells anything basically, that's why many products focus on characters like Mario because it brings more customers to the product. It's like big movies, you are more likely to have success with a big star than an unknown actor. Unless you think Mario Odyssey would have been better with some random bloke digitised and taking the helm of the game. Maybe call it 'Arthur Smith's platform extravaganza'. There is a magic and factor x to Mario in games I think. It certainly makes them more appealing to me.
@Misima
I also want a realistic look. To me it is probably the music, which makes the biggest difference between 64 and Blue Storm in terms of vibes. 64 is more relaxed and gentle, whilst Blue Storm is more fast paced and feels cool and rocky. But maybe it is better that way and the music should also change with each entry, to keep it fresh. And in the end, as long as it is a fun and quality Wave Race game with enjoyable vibes, I will enjoy it. Both of the games I played, easily met those requirements.
@Jhena ahhh, well I understand now and I think I would agree. Though Nintendo tends to go too far into loosey goosey fun. They would rather make Diddy Kong Racer than F Zero GX. But I do agree that's Blue Storm was trying hard to say t for teen.
Hell yes! I love the only 2 we've got, especially Blue Storm. A Switch 2 Wave Race would be stunning. A Wave Race with online multiplayer would be really killer too.
I'd like one halfway between cartoonish and realistic.
@Matt_Barber I won't excuse the pun! But you do make a good point. I still think the only reason to do this would be to push the physics and graphics of water to the maximum. Lots of games make water look nice. But I don't think games really have done simulation since Wave Race on the cube.
@vio I think if they went more cartoony than Punch Out or tried to do it with Mii they would be making a mistake. Bright 90s colors would be a good look, but I would try to make them look pretty realistic if I was the director. That would be my vibe. Since the people are mostly wet suit covered, they don't need to be as realistic as the water. That's what needs to be perfect.
Wave Race Blue Storm was my first GC game. It has amazing physics and graphics. The hard mode is difficult and realistic. I'd love a sequel or an expanded remake!
